Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Cleveland Browns | Lewis: 'It's my time of year'

Lewis: 'It's my time of year'

Steve King, Staff Writer
11.25.2007

Browns running back Jamal Lewis looked at the calendar: Nov. 25.
He then looked at the weather conditions: 41 degrees with a wind-chill of 33.
And finally he looked at his team's uniforms: Throwbacks from the 1957-59 seasons, when Browns Pro Football Hall of Fame backs Jim Brown and Bobby Mitchell were beginning their careers, and just after another Canton, Ohio enshrine, Marion Motley, had finished his.
Taking it all in, Lewis cherished the moment. So he smiled and buckled his chin strap.

Cleveland Browns | Battling Winslow has big day

Battling Winslow has big day

Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer
11.25.2007

Just minutes after a 10-catch, 107-yard day during a 27-17 win over the Houston Texans, Kellen Winslow was asked if he feels as healthy as he did when he was drafted out of college.
"(Heck) no," Winslow said. "Not even close. Not even close."
He said the day after games he sometimes feels like he's 60 years old. Sometimes he said he feels 30.
Winslow is only 24.

It might be but it also could be the Jets because one of the tiebreakers down the road is common opponents but I don't know how Buffalo has fared against New York this year. Actually, the game that scares me the most it is the Bungles.

Also if we are the last team into the playoffs, we would play the #3 seed which would be the Squealers.

I will have to look at Tennessee, along with the other pretenders, to see how many of their games are Away/home

And here I was trying to keep my hopes down a little.

Perhaps, however, the Steelers have their own problems to worry about at this point.

Their schedule does them no favors.

Assuming they'll win tonight (although I'm holding out hope that Miami is somehow DUE to win a game they shouldn't ) they have:

Cincinnati - should be an interesting game

@NE - Pittsburgh has struggled on the road all year long.

Jacksonville - Jacksonville might be a better team at this point and if Santonio Holmes isn't healthy, they might have issues moving the ball.

@ St. Louis - they suck and Gus Ferrotte is their QB now probably...

@ Baltimore - they should win this one, but again they've struggled on the road all year long.

Pittsburgh could win all of those games, or lose 4 of them (assuming they beat Miami tonight and STL)....

the division race isn't over yet either.

Browns' solid effort on defense buoys spirits

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- Although it was just one game, the Browns are feeling good about their defensive performance Sunday in a 27-17 victory over the Houston Texans.
The defense, which entered the game ranked last in the NFL, put together four solid quarters for just the second time this season.

CHECK OUT MY MOVES Browns defensive lineman Shaun Smith struts for the Cleveland Browns Stadium crowd Sunday after sacking Texans quarterback Matt Schaub. The Browns? defense had arguably its best game Sunday, allowing a season-low 314 yards in a 27-17 win.

BEREA The Browns beat Houston with a bang. Their 27-17 win was laced with big hits.

They?re not just winning ? they?re 5-1 since a loss at New England. They?re walloping.

Safety Brodney Pool separated tight end Owen Daniels from the ball and his senses on one tone-setting play.

?I liked it,?? Defensive Coordinator Todd Grantham said with a grin.

Linebacker Antwan Peek blasted through the line, hit Matt Schaub, and kept flailing his arms like a madman until he was sure the sack was in the bag. Stumpy lineman Shaun Smith barged through like a beer truck for another sack.

Browns will face a red-hot Kurt Warner

BEREA Time for the Browns’ pass defense to strap on the helmets a little tighter.

Arizona’s Kurt Warner, the next quarterback they will face, passed for 484 yards Sunday, an NFL high for Week 12 — albeit in a loss to the 49ers.

No. 2 Brett Favre had 103 fewer yards.

Derek Anderson and Matt Schaub together passed for 509 yards at Cleveland.

Given Warner’s pedigree as a two-time NFL MVP and his Sunday outburst, it’s a good time for rookie cornerback Brandon McDonald to have broken through.

BROWNS NOTEBOOK
UPDATE: 9:19 PM, Monday, November 26, 2007

DEFENSE MAKES CASE

The Browns? run defense remains near the bottom of the NFL rankings, allowing 136.8 yards a game. However, four of the last five opponents have been under that average. The Texans ran for 77 yards.

?We did a decent job against the run,? Romeo Crennel said Monday with an air of satisfaction.

The pass rush is better than it was early in the year. The Browns have almost twice as many sacks (19) as their own quarterback, Derek Anderson, has taken (11).

Browns novelty destination for national media
UPDATE: 9:19 PM, Monday, November 26, 2007
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA The pre-2007 Browns won no popularity contests.

When the team was losing, which was always ...

?Nobody wanted to talk to you,? Romeo Crennel said.

Now, Cleveland is a preferred novelty destination for national media.

After Sunday?s latest win, linebacker Willie McGinest was the last man in the locker room, tied up in a long cell phone chat with Peter King.

'Stepsister' D taking some steps forward

Categories: Browns

All season long, the Browns defense has been the ugly stepsister of its Cinderella offense.
All of that is changing with a playoff berth on the line.
Suddenly, the homely wallflower has undergone an extreme makeover and is ready for the ball.
"It's all coming together for us at the right time," said cornerback Daven Holly after the Browns' 27-17 victory Sunday over the Texans.

Plain Dealer columnist Bud Shaw analyzes the Cleveland Browns

Tuesday, November 27, 2007 Bud Shaw
Plain Dealer Columnist
December will bring the sev enth anniversary of a quote few believed at the time and nobody has the slightest reason to remember.
"When we start winning, we'll use this kind of weather to our advantage," Browns linebacker Wali Rainer said after a frozen December loss to Tennessee at the lakefront.
Imagining the Browns playing rock 'em-sock 'em football with minus-degree wind chill and a hard crust on their home field is a thought plump with nostalgia. They've gone 3-14 in home games after Nov. 30 since their return.

BROWNS INSIDER
Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow plays in pain

Tuesday, November 27, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Kellen Winslow hates to talk about playing in pain but offered a glimpse Sunday of just how banged up he really is.
"The Monday after Seattle, I was bedridden," he said of his 11-catch, 125-yard day in a 33-30 win against the Seahawks on Nov. 4, both career highs. "That game took a lot out of me. I'm trying to stay healthy. We have five more."
Winslow, who caught 10 passes for 107 yards against the Houston Texans on Sunday, only addressed it because he was asked by a national reporter if he's close to being as healthy as he was in college.

I might agree that the Division race might not be over but I really only see Pittsburgh losing one more game (Patriots) and that's all. We would have to win out and have the Squealers lose one more game (perhaps Jacksonville).

In a way, it might be advisable to root for the Squealers to keep winning because Indy plays Tennessee the last game of the season. San Diego has to play at Tennessee and they also have Denver on their schedule which might help the Browns if we lose one of our remaining teams which is highly possible since I am so optimistic:)

The first tiebreaker out of Division is won-loss record within the Conference so that loss to Oakland really hurt the Browns. I guess maybe I should waiting a few more weeks before I get really crushed emotionally:(
