Thursday, December 06, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Cornerback Eric Wright practiced Wednesday on a limited basis and is making progress after missing two straight games with a right knee injury.
"I was able to do some things on Friday, too, and I felt good pretty good afterward," Wright said. "Now I'm just trying to build on that and get better every day."
But Wright made no promises about returning Sunday for the game against the New York Jets at East Rutherford, N.J.

By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- Seven years ago, Derek Anderson walked off the football field having led Scappoose High School to the Oregon state title game with a 46-26 win over Burns in a Class 3A semifinal.
On the opposing sideline was Kellen Clemens, whose high school career ended that night.
"I don't really remember much from the game, but it was good," Anderson said. "We were both ranked in the top five (quarterbacks) in the country coming out of our senior year."

Browns notebook: WBNS will stick with Browns-Jets game

Thursday, December 6, 2007 3:32 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- Despite contemplating a change, WBNS (Channel 10) will televise the Cleveland Browns-New York Jets game on Sunday instead of the high-profile Pittsburgh Steelers-New England Patriots matchup.
Last month, CBS used the NFL's flex scheduling to push back the Steelers-Patriots game from 1 p.m. to 4:15 so it could be shown to more of the country. The Browns-Jets game was already slotted for that time.

Thomas picked NFL rookie of the month Lineman first member of Browns to be named since QB Tim Couch|
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Friday, Dec 07, 2007
BEREA: Browns rookie left tackle Joe Thomas doesn't worry about how many sacks he's allowed this season.
Perhaps that's because Cleveland has surrendered only 16 and the former Wisconsin All-American could take the blame for less than a handful.
But Thomas received some surprise recognition Thursday when he was named NFL rookie of the month. He is the first Brown to earn the award since quarterback Tim Couch in October 1999.
''It's a nice thing. I didn't know they voted on a rookie of the month, to be honest,'' Thomas said.

Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow doesn't let lost TD catch distract him

Friday, December 07, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Catch or no catch? Forced out or not? The last play in the Arizona game is not going to be changed. Kellen Winslow has moved on.
"It's gone, past," Winslow said Thursday. "I caught the ball. I think about if I could've gotten two feet in. But it's gone and I'm fo cused on the Jets."
It's incredible that Win slow even got one foot down in the Arizona end zone last Sunday.

Winslow shining in spotlight
Friday, December 7, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA First, there?s Kellen Winslow Jr.?s pedigree.

He?s starting to play like his Hall of Fame father. When he came out of college in 2004, the scouts said he would.

Then there?s his production. He leads NFL tight ends with 909 receiving yards.

Heading into Sunday?s game against the Jets, he?s so conspicuously dangerous that it?s a bear for him to get open.

Sunday?s final play at Arizona would have been just his fourth catch of the game. He caught 31 passes while the Browns won three of four games, prompting the Cardinals to take drastic measures.

Winslow related the way the Cardinals were covering him to a video game.

?If you guys know about Madden, it?s called ?spotlight,? ? Winslow said from his locker stall Thursday. ?They ?spotlight? a guy, and their whole defense was ?spotlighted? on me, I think.

A Q&A with Winslow
Friday, December 7, 2007

Issue: Last year, Winslow drew some wrath when he said he views himself as the best tight end in the league.

Winslow: You learn from your mistakes. Sometimes the media takes that out of context. I think I?m the best tight end, but I can learn from other tight ends. That?s just my competitive nature. ... There?s other tight ends, all-around tight ends, like a (Jason) Witten. He?s a good blocking tight end, a good pass-catching tight end. I?m more of a pass-catching tight end. So I feel I?m the best at what I do, and that?s making plays.

Issue: Winslow had the Arizona game in his hands but couldn?t get his feet in bounds on a game-ending pass that could have reversed a 27-21 deficit. Replays indicated the play could have been ruled a touchdown, had it been ruled he was forced out.

Winslow: It?s gone. I caught the ball. I think about if I could have got two feet in. It?s gone and past.

Rutigliano seeing return to glory days of Browns
Friday, December 7, 2007
GATEHOUSE OHIO GROUP

UNIONTOWN
Sam Rutigliano knows what Northeast Ohio can be like when the Cleveland Browns get rolling.

He saw it up close during the 1980 ?Kardiac Kids? season as Cleveland?s head coach. With the Browns at 7-5 entering Sunday?s game at the New York Jets, they?re competing for the playoffs and enjoying an unforeseen renaissance.

Rutigliano, who was 47-50 in six-plus seasons with the Browns, spoke Thursday at Ohio Prestwick Country Club as part of the Northeast Ohio Celebrity Luncheon Club.

?There?s a generation of fans who haven?t experienced what happened in 1980 and later in that decade,? said Rutigliano, now an analyst for SportsTime Ohio. ?Right now, though, they?re 5-1 at home and realistically could finish 7-1 at home, and they could make the playoffs.

?I can see it, going to the stadium this season and coming out after a win, it?s very similar to how it was in 1980. It?s just unbelievable.?

Thomas receives rare award for rookie
By MIKE McLAIN Tribune Chronicle

BEREA ? In what is a rarity, Browns rookie offensive tackle Joe Thomas has been named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month for his play in November.

The award is normally reserved for skilled-position players on offense or defensive players that post big sack, tackle or interception totals. There are no statistics for offensive linemen that can impress the decision-makers.

The NFL credited Thomas for helping an offense that?s ranked fourth in scoring (28 points a game) and sixth in total yards (353.3 a game). He?s helped provide excellent protection for quarterback Derek Anderson and helped pave the way for running back Jamal Lewis.

File photo<SPAN class=caption>Derek Anderson and Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens have a friendly rivalry dating back to their high school days.

Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens was surprised to hear good friend Derek Anderson described him as a "little squatty guy" and revealed that he showed up at an elite high school football camp wearing a cowboy hat and cutoffs.
"Hey, I thought it was a friendly rivalry," said Clemens, who will start for the Jets on Sunday against the Browns' Anderson at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J.
Anderson and Clemens (6-2, 223) will renew a rivalry that began in high school when they both lived in tiny Oregon towns. Anderson is from Scappoose, 30 minutes from Portland, with a population of about 5,000. Clemens is from a remote ranch in Burns, population of about 3,000. Clemens' graduating class in high school had 63 students.

Fortunes change for Browns, Jets
Both learn how the other lived in 2006, for better or worse
Sunday, December 9, 2007 3:11 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- How quickly do things change in the NFL?
In 2006, the New York Jets were the surprise team of the league under coach Eric Mangini, nicknamed the "Man-Genius" for leading his team to the playoffs in his first season.
The Cleveland Browns, meanwhile, were in shambles. They finished 4-12 with serious quarterback issues, and coach Romeo Crennel was on the hot seat.
But when these two teams meet today in East Rutherford, N.J., the circumstances will be quite different.
