Former Browns coach Sam Rutigliano sees a lot of Ozzie Newsome in Kellen Winslow

Sam thought he caught it, too, for a perfect 10. Well, actually, with the PAT, a perfect 7.
"The catch Kellen Winslow made wasn't hitting a home run when you're already ahead, 10-0," said Sam Rutigliano. "He made the catch on the last play of the game [at Arizona last Sunday], while being double-covered. It looked like he was forced out. It would have put us within the extra point of winning the game. For strength, concentration, and athletic ability, that catch would be right at the top of the scale in the NFL. One-to-10, it's a 10."
If you noted the "us" in that comment, it is proof that, once a Browns coach (1978-midseason 1984 for Sam), always a Browns coach. In somewhat the same way, once a respected judge of prime talent at tight end, always a top talent evaluator. Rutigliano coached and was instrumental in the drafting of Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Ozzie Newsome with the Browns.

East Rutherford, N.J. -- The Browns have a prime opportunity against the 3-9 Jets today to strengthen their grip on the second AFC wildcard spot.
Heading in, the Browns are clinging to that second spot by virtue of a tiebreaker over the Titans, who are also 7-5. The Browns have the slight edge thanks to their 5-4 conference record. The Titans, who host the 7-5 Chargers today, are 4-4 in the AFC.
The second tiebreaker is common opponents -- and the Jets are one of them, making this game crucial in terms of the first two tiebreakers. Currently, the Titans are 3-1 vs. common opponents with only the Jets remaining. The Browns are 2-1 with the Jets and Bengals left.

Cleveland Browns | Edwards ties touchdown record

EAST RUTHERFORD. N.J. -- Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards tied the team record for most touchdown receptions in a season with his four-yarder early in the second half of Sunday's game against the New York Jets at The Meadowlands.
That score, which put the Browns ahead 14-3, gives him 13 for the season and a piece of the mark also held by wide receiver Gary Collins (1963).

Cleveland Browns | Lewis, defense key wild 24-18 win

Lewis, defense key wild 24-18 win

Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer
12.09.2007

The Browns appeared to be headed to a comfortable victory Sunday at the Meadowlands.
But the 2007 version of the Kardiac Kids were having no part of that.
The New York Jets scored a late touchdown and recovered an onside kick to put themselves in position to take the lead, but the Browns held the Jets out of the end zone in the final two minutes to secure a 24-18 victory.

Chargers close in on AFC West title with comeback win

Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- LaDainian Tomlinson wanted to eliminate all the risks of trying a field goal in overtime.
So he took the ball, cut to his left and outran everyone on a 16-yard touchdown run with 7:29 left in overtime, finishing off the Chargers' rally from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Tennessee Titans 23-17 on Sunday.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ? If one was looking for a definitive performance that stamped the Cleveland Browns as a threat to make a deep playoff run, they didn't find it here.
As defensive end Simon Fraser phrased it following Sunday's messy 24-18 win over the New York Jets, "We're just lucky we got away with one."

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ? With six minutes left in a rainy fourth quarter Sunday and the Browns leading 17-6, Jamal Lewis wanted the ball, but the Browns kept throwing passes.
Eventually, he went 31 yards straight up the middle with 1:22 remaining for the touchdown that sealed a 24-18 victory.

BULL RUSH IN CLUTCH Lewis' dash seals victory in ugly game; hope still alive
By Marla Ridenour

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.: The Browns' 24-18 victory Sunday over the New York Jets was a triumph of substance over style.
Despite nearly blowing a 17-6 fourth-quarter lead and needing Joe Jurevicius to recover two of the Jets' three onside kicks in the final 2:59, the Browns (8-5) took a major step in the race for an AFC wild-card berth.
In a driving rain, Jamal Lewis bulled 31 yards for a touchdown that gave the Browns a 24-15 lead with 1:22 remaining, prompting excited owner Randy Lerner to pound the table in his booth with both fists.
''Jamal broke loose like a madman,'' receiver Braylon Edwards said.
''At that moment in the game, he looked like a man possessed,'' Jurevicius said.

Win is nice, but Browns need to finish Browns reach Jets 22, then settle for field goal
Published on Monday, Dec 10, 2007

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.: This wasn't a win worthy of Four Horsemen-esque words (''Outlined against a blue-gray October sky . . . '')
Nope. Not this one.
Yes, the Browns won a game in the Meadowlands, and that's what matters. But until a Jamal Lewis rumble late in the game, their play did not send fireworks over the Statue of Liberty.
The Browns tried to give it away at the end, but were helped by the bizarre belief of coach Eric Mangini that his New York Jets could recover not one but two onside kicks in one game.

Jurevicius comes up big during Jets' onside kicks Browns veteran receiver recovers two of three attempts in last 2:59

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.: Joe Jurevicius said he's never seen three onside kicks in a game and hopes he never does again.
But the sure hands of Jurevicius helped save the day as the Browns escaped Giants Stadium Sunday with a 24-18 victory over the New York Jets.
Jets kicker Mike Nugent booted three onside kicks in the final 2:59 and Jurevicius recovered two, including the last one with 32 seconds remaining. The outcome was crucial for the Browns (8-5), who now control their own destiny in the AFC wild-card playoff race.

Lewis runs for more than was expected Clutch play designed to gain three yards, but excellent blocks lead way to end zone
By Patrick McManamon

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.: Derek Anderson said in the huddle he wanted three yards.
That's all.
Jamal Lewis gave the Browns 31 ? and a touchdown that more or less sealed a win over the New York Jets in the Meadowlands.
''It ended up going farther than we thought it would,'' Lewis said.
The reason: the blocking on the left side of the line and the running of Lewis.
That touchdown gave the Browns a 24-15 lead with 1:22 left and meant the Jets' last-gasp efforts would require a miracle.
They didn't get it, thanks to Lewis, who had his third 100-yard game of the season (21 carries, 118 yards) and scored two touchdowns (on a 7-yard reception and the 31-yard run).

Ridenour on the Browns
No shortage of MVPs in Cleveland this year Thomas, Steinbach, Cribbs and Anderson have role in incredible turnaround
Published on Sunday, Dec 09, 2007

In the spirit of election week, as the NFL conducts Pro Bowl voting, it's time to consider the Browns' leading candidates for 2007 Most Valuable Player.
Referee Pete Morelli (who elected to discuss Phil Dawson's double-bounce field goal in Baltimore), back judge Keith Ferguson (who got the call right), Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick (who kicked to Joshua Cribbs) and other opponents and their gaffes will be excluded.
But it is not a players-only list. Whether or not this turns out to be Tony Rizzo's season of dreams, there are several worthy nominees who helped the Browns return to respectability.

Cleveland Browns' ugly victory over New York Jets helps bid for playoffs

Browns' ugly win aids playoff bid
Monday, December 10, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
East Rutherford, N.J.- Style points don't count in the NFL. This isn't that goofy BCS college system.
That's a good thing for the Browns. They struggled on offense, gave up a ton of yards on defense and were outplayed and outcoached on special teams.
But with a cold rain pelting a nearly empty Giants Stadium, they survived a strategy-filled fourth quarter and outlasted the going-nowhere New York Jets, 24-18, to strengthen their hold on an AFC playoff berth.

-- Rain was falling like the Browns' lead, and the cold was settling into men's bones as if establishing squatter's rights to hypothermia. The days are short and sullen. It is December in the NFL. The games are meaner and more brutish.
It is Jamal Lewis' time.

Braylon Edwards ties Gary Collins for share of Cleveland Browns' TD reception record

Monday, December 10, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
East Rutherford, N.J. -- In only his third season, receiver Braylon Edwards tied Gary Collins' franchise record of 13 touchdown catches set in 1963.
He did so on a 4-yard catch in the end zone on which he climbed up over the back of New York Jets rookie Darrelle Revis and snatched the ball.
"It feels good," Edwards said of tying the record. "You look at the guys who have played here -- the Paul Warfields and Gary Collins and Webster Slaughters and Ozzie Newsomes and to tie the all-time record for touchdowns in a season means a lot."
