Browns' growth since their season-opening 34-7 loss makes game against Steelers meaningful for first time in a while
Wednesday, November 07, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
n the 1970s and '80s, when the Browns were in the throes of 16 losses in a row to the Steelers in Pittsburgh, they tried everything to break the Three Rivers Stadium jinx.
They flew. They bused. Former owner Art Modell changed hotels every year -- anything to change their luck.
"I said, Art, put us against Carnegie Mellon in Three Rivers and I guarantee we'd win,' " former coach Sam Rutigliano recalled.

Plain Dealer columnist Terry Pluto analyzes Cleveland Browns

Wednesday, November 07, 2007
When Sunday's game was over, star tight end Kel len Winslow was crying and Browns fans in the parking lot were laughing, blowing their horns in sheer joy. No one could quite believe what happened. Not just the stunning, 33-30, overtime victory over Seattle Sunday at Browns Stadium, but the entire season!
The Browns really are 5-3!
They really are 4-1 at home!

Bentley was put on the PUP list today. Guess we will not see him until 2008, if then. If there is one guy who deserves to take another snap, it's him.
Yup, feel bad for Chuck. He was the one guy who really wanted to play for the Browns. Let's hope he can do it next year.

Kellen Winslow's 11-catch, 125-yard game against the Seahawks had us all drifting back to the legendary game his father had against the Dolphins in the playoffs 26 years ago. The Browns' Kellen played in pain the entire way, made big catches to set up two touchdowns, including the final one. A correspondent who was in the postgame locker room described the scene as follows: "Someone asked him, 'Is this your sweetest day as a pro?' He put his head down for a few moments. When he looked up there were tears running down his face. 'I'm sorry,' he said." You think that after something like that, I'm not going to raise the Brownies to the top 10?

As I had hoped, I am now fully able to place Winslow and Edwards strictly in a Cleveland Browns uniform. I'm talking about two players that, quite frankly, my friends, family, and entire environment, and I were pissed off about drafting at the time. Understandably, I guess, most of us are Buckeye fans but besides the programs these guys came from, they weren't just from that school, they were that school. When you pictured K2 and Braylon, you didn't just see the player, you saw what they represented as far as nemeses go. We don't like the Sugarcanes, and we hate the Blew!

They have begun to embrace their situation, the Browns, the city of Cleveland, the state of Ohio, and the unique position that they are in. They see the passion of Browns fans and the lofty throne on which they sit in as Browns players, especially as high-draft-pick and high-expectation Browns players, on a team that never has any expectations. They are starting to put the pieces together, in the face of the entire league (country, reputation, etc..) and they have jumped with both feet into this boat. They see what transpires after a 3 game winning streak that seems to have the entire nation of Browns fans in full-out cum mode, and the talking heads are finally actually turning their heads.

As I have embraced them. Wow. While I obviously wanted these guys to succeed since Day 1 in this uniform, the way it has started to come around doesn't just bring tears to Kellen's eyes. Trust me.

Now, don't think I have forgotten the next dood on this list.... You know I don't need to tell you who it is....Go Browns

Preparing for 'Blitzburgh' Anderson, other Browns know big task ahead, say they are confident
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Thursday, Nov 08, 2007
BEREA: His quick release will have to be quicker.
His film study with Ken Dorsey and Brady Quinn will require more attention.
His awareness will have to be heightened.
Above all, Derek Anderson must maintain his confidence.
Such are the demands of facing the Pittsburgh Steelers' zone blitz ? the challenge the Browns quarterback and his teammates face at 1 p.m. Sunday at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
In the Browns' 34-7 season-opening loss to the Steelers, Charlie Frye was sacked five times and Anderson once, all in the first half. That accounted for six of the 27 sacks the Steelers (6-3) have this year.
First-year coach Mike Tomlin is combining his Cover 2 defensive style with the zone-blitz scheme of its creator, 70-year-old Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, and the transition seems relatively seamless.

Steelers put Winslow on alert for Sunday Pittsburgh linebacker Farrior says he'll be looking for Browns tight end
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Thursday, Nov 08, 2007
BEREA: Browns tight end Kellen Winslow will have to be on the alert after Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Farrior issued a warning Wednesday.
In the Steelers' 27-7 victory over the visiting Browns last December, Winslow blocked Farrior after the whistle and was flagged 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct. The fourth-quarter incident prompted linebacker Joey Porter to use a slur about homosexuals in reference to Winslow in a postgame interview.

New-look Cleveland Browns offense faces old rival Pittsburgh Steelers' defense

Steelers' zone defense usually frustrates foes, but Browns are happy with offense, which is in the zone
Thursday, November 08, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Pittsburgh has the NFL's No. 1 defense through eight games. That is no surprise to a team like the Browns that has played the Steelers twice a year for 57 years.
The Steelers were ranked first in defense in the 2001 and 2004 seasons. They were third in 2002, fourth in 2005, second in 1996, third in 1995, second in 1994 and third in 1993.
The common denominator in all but two of those seasons has been the presence of Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, the inventor of the "zone blitz." When former Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher hired LeBeau in 1992 and installed his system, the Steelers adopted the nickname "Blitzburgh."

A Flash in the pan? No way, say Steelers
Thursday, November 8, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk

BEREA A golden era will reflect off the orange and black helmets strapped on Joshua Cribbs and James Harrison when Cleveland and Pittsburgh butt heads.

What college has produced more hot NFL players who went undrafted than Kent State?

Harrison, who lit up Monday Night Football for the Steelers, was an undrafted rookie in 2002.

Cribbs, third in the league in kickoff returns, was an undrafted rookie in 2005.

Crennel: ?Violent? not in his vocabulary
Thursday, November 8, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA The Steelers came away from that rip job of the Ravens leaving some observers with the impression they invented something.

A theme of ESPN?s broadcast was Head Coach Mike Tomlin?s use of the word ?violent? as a tone-setter for his football philosophy.

The Browns aren?t taking the approach football is the Steelers? sport, and they?re just honored to have been invited to Pittsburgh.

?I mean, it?s violent, but up front in a battle of the trenches, it?s always going to be a violent game,? said Browns defensive lineman Shaun Smith. ?They?re gonna try to knock us off the ball. We?re gonna try to knock them back off the ball.?

Pittsburgh linebacker warns Browns' Winslow
Farrior remembers last year's late hit
UPDATE: 1:16 PM, Wednesday, November 7, 2007

BEREA Browns lineman Ryan Tucker toed the company line.

?I?m going to tell you what you don?t want to hear,?? he said before today?s preparations for the battle vs. the arch-rival Steelers. ?One game at a time.??

Pittsburgh linebacker James Farrior, on the other hand, flirted with the politically correct line most coaches like their players to honor in interviews.

Reminded that he had an issue with Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. the last time the Browns played at Pittsburgh, Farrior said, ?Oh ... last year when he took a cheap shot???

BROWNS NOTEBOOK

STEVE DOERSCHUK

A little respect

Defensive end Aaron Smith, a career overachiever who wasn?t picked until Round 4 in 1999, is a Pittsburgh tone-setter, Browns offensive lineman RuTucker said.

?He?s probably one of the most under-rated linemen I?ve ever played against,? Tucker said. ?The guy is tough as hell. I respect him tremendously.?

Smith is back at practice after missing two games with a sprained knee.

Browns vs. Steelers: the same old story?
Cleveland QB switch changes some things

ASSOCIATED PRESS

BEREA, Ohio - The last time the Browns faced the Steelers way back in Week 1, Charlie Frye was the quarterback and Cleveland didn't have a chance. A lot has changed in two months. After winning three straight games for the first time in six years, the Browns are getting ready to challenge Pittsburgh on Sunday for first place in the AFC North. The Browns say they feel like a different team than they were Sept. 9, when they opened the season with a 34-7 loss at home to the Steelers. Two days later Frye was traded, Derek Anderson was named the starting QB and the Browns were on their way to becoming one of the most productive offenses in the NFL.

Browns face a tall order Sunday: Chopping down Roethlisberger

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Friday, November 09, 2007

BEREA ? The Browns have played defense this season as if they signed a pact to keep the opposing quarterback's uniform clean.
Their lack of a pass rush is cause for concern going into Sunday's showdown with the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field.
