Dinged-up Winslow soldiers on in victory
Monday, November 5, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Seated at his locker - standing would've hurt just too much - Kellen Winslow ticked off a list of injuries. His shoulder has been "dinged" all season. It hurt again Sunday. His hip was bruised.

Never mind that Winslow already is a 24-year-old playing in a 44-year-old's body.

He was battered and banged up Sunday night against the Seahawks. He missed a play when his shoulder got "dinged" again.

"I told you I was a soldier, man," Winslow said, laughing at a statement he made in college that caused him much public angst.

Jones gets crucial stop in OT for Browns
Monday, November 5, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Everybody, even the people who had been drinking for eight hours, knew what the play meant.

"Do or die,'' Browns safety Sean Jones said.

Seattle had reached Cleveland's 44-yard line in overtime, but it was fourth-and-one with the lights blazing in Cleveland Browns Stadium.

The Browns allowed 423 more yards Sunday, worse than their league-worst average.

Given the circumstances - the Seahawks had a fourth-and-one and didn't want to turn the ball back over to Derek Anderson - Head Coach Mike Holmgren's decision was a no-brainer.

Go for it.

BROWNS NOTEBOOK
Monday, November 5, 2007

The turnaround

The Browns opened the second half with the kind of football that has worked for them, scoring off the kickoff on a 69-yard drive, then holding Seattle to a field goal.

Waylaid by a dysfunctional first half, though, they trailed 24-16 with 11/2 quarters left.

Phil Dawson's missed extra point reared its ugly head after the Browns drove to Jamal Lewis' 2-yard touchdown run with 12:42 left. That made it 24-22.

On the 2-point conversion try, Anderson lofted a jump ball to Braylon Edwards, a play that helped deliver a win at St. Louis. This time, though, Anderson didn't throw high enough to Edwards in the end zone. Cornerback Marcus Trufant had little trouble knocking the ball down.

Kicking game not so special
Monday, November 5, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Special teams had Browns fans screaming for a specialist - say, a cardiologist - pretty much until it got dark Sunday.

What's the old saying? All's special that ends special?

After fracturing Sunday's game against Seattle with a rare missed extra point, Phil Dawson nailed a 25-yard field goal to give the Browns a wild 33-30 win.

Dawson looked to the sky and pumped his left arm as the Browns Stadium lights reflected off his beaming face.

Memorable victory shows it's safe to love browns again
Monday, November 5, 2007

CLEVELAND

For the better part of nine football falls now, this was the night Cleveland fans had been waiting for. A love affair with their football team was rekindled.

Go ahead. It just might be safe to love the Browns again without feeling jilted in a week. But wait to ask for a dance until after next week's Pittsburgh game.

Rub the earth and find that old rubber Dawg mask. The Browns have won - mercy me - three games in a row.

Who's kidding whom here? The Cavs were in the NBA Finals, and you loved then. The Indians were a win away from the World Series, and summer love is sultry. But when Haley's Comet stops by and the Browns are good, this is Brownstown.

THEY WON IT HERE
Monday, November 5, 2007

On fourth-and-1 from the Seattle 15, Browns Head Coach Romeo Crennel put the game and his team's psyche on the line with more than 13 minutes left in the game. QB Derek Anderson got great protection from the offensive line. TE Kellen Winslow ran a precise out route and Anderson's pass hit Winslow where he could do something with it. Winslow took it to the Seattle 2 and Jamal Lewis took it in from there. The 2-point conversion failed, but Cleveland came back from the dead, after trailing 21-6, and were within another possession of tying the game. They did that. They gained momentum and won a game in overtime they hadn't been able to win in the past.

Jamal Lewis scores 4 TDs as surprising Browns rally for 33-30 overtime win
Associated Press |
- 11.05.2007

[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]CLEVELAND ? Overcome with emotion, Kellen Winslow could barely speak. For a long moment, he sat at his locker, bowed his head and reflected on a day unlike any he?s exerpienced in the NFL.
This was a special win for Winslow, and the tear running down his left cheek was proof.
He?s tired of losing, and so are the Cleveland Browns.
?It?s about how bad do you want it,? said Winslow, who ignored shoulder and knee pain to catch 11 passes for 125 yards. ?I?m just so proud of us because we fought as a team. We deserve this.?
Counted out before the season started, the Browns are back.

Lewis loses one record, sets another
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
11/05/2007

CLEVELAND -- On a day when one record fell for Jamal Lewis, he set a record of his own and helped keep the Browns close to first place in the AFC North.

Lewis rushed for four touchdowns to help defeat the Seahawks, 33-30, in overtime. Earlier in the day, Vikings rookie Adrian Peterson rushed for 296 yards, breaking Lewis' single-game record of 295 yards set against Browns when Lewis was with the Ravens.

''It feels great knowing the offensive coordinator is going to call your number in that area,'' Lewis said. ''The offensive line blocked great.''

Edwards to pay for child?s funeral
Thursday, November 1, 2007
TODD PORTER

BEREA Tara Douglas can rest her mind a little bit. The mother of 15-year-old Denzel Douglas, the heart transplant patient who met Braylon Edwards two weeks ago and died last Friday, will be able to give her son a proper funeral.

Because the Cleveland Browns wide receiver stepped in.

Edwards, who was touched by the family and particularly Denzel, is paying for the entire cost of the teenager?s funeral Friday.

Braylon is a really good guy. He does a lot for the community and gives a lot to charity. Hard to believe that he is a sUMmer.

It is such a pleasure to see a team in Cleveland that has the intestinal fortitude to feel like they can always come back and win. I love the confidence that the offense has. I look the poise of DA. I love the hard running of J. Lewis. The resiliency of our wide receiving core to be sure-handed (most of the time  ). I give it up to Chud. The man has them believing.

Braylon has really matured this year and I often do forget he is a scumbutt. He tries to remind every other game by dropping a ball though.

Thing goodness for automatic replay in OT. Romeo would have never thrown his red hanky on that third-down run by M. H. They were on their way to a game-winning FG if they had made that first down. PD needs to get serious about his extra points. That first miss almost cost us the game.

Winslow was a warrior with a separated shoulder. I don't know that Edwards had an injury which prohibited him from making those two catches which almost cost us the game. He played well but there is no excuse for those two drops.
