Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

I've made a post similar to this a couple times this year. If the season ended this week, the first round draft pick that the Browns traded for the pick they used to select Brady Quinn would be no higher than #21 and no lower than #23. What number was Brady Quinn's pick????? The point is, I don't think giving up a second round pick to make a first round pick a year early is a bad move, especially since they got the guy they thought could be the franchise QB. The funny thing is, they may have stumbled upon the guy who ends up being the franchise QB. Picking Quinn may have been a waste simply because they may not end up needing him. You certainly can't fault the front office for things playing out that way though.

The Browns have not lost a game in nearly a month - and it's not the offseason.

Also from the "if the season ended this week department": The Browns on on the cusp of being a wild card team. Tennessee has one of those spots right now at 6-2. Jacksonville is 5-3 just like the Browns, and they would win a tiebreaker against Cleveland by virtue of their better record in AFC games. Regardless of what Baltimore does in their game tomorrow night, at this point the Browns would be ahead of them in the wild card pecking order.

It's a good time to be a Browns fan right now. The schedule is favorable for a wild card run from here on out, and if they can somehow come out of Pittsburgh with a win next week, they'll be in prime position to win the division.

CLEVELAND ? Is it time to start writing songs about this team or christening it with nicknames?
Possibly so after a Kardiac Kids-like conclusion Sunday enabled the Cleveland Browns to beat the Seattle Seahawks 33-30 with a Phil Dawson field goal in overtime.

Tom Archdeacon: He didn't need to talk at all on this day

By Tom Archdeacon

CLEVELAND ? On a day when he had done one surprising thing after another, this was the last one. The one where Kellen Winslow left everyone speechless.
It didn't happen on the field where the Cleveland Browns tight end made one huge play after another ? 11 catches for 125 yards ? as his team came from behind Sunday to edge the Seattle Seahawks 33-30 in overtime at Cleveland Stadium.

Browns finally have learned to be a team Tight end shows grit with remarkable game
Published on Monday, Nov 05, 2007

CLEVELAND: For two years, coach Romeo Crennel has sounded a familiar theme with the Cleveland Browns: If this team keeps playing hard, he said, good things would happen.
It was not an easy thing to hear when the Browns were stumbling through embarrassing loss after embarrassing loss. Crennel's mantra
did not change. He maintained that good things would happen if his team kept fighting.

Dawson delivers in clutch for win Browns kicker nails overtime field goal to earn redemption
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Monday, Nov 05, 2007
CLEVELAND: A tough day turned into a joyous one for kicker Phil Dawson, whose 25-yard field goal with 9:19 remaining in overtime gave the Browns a 33-30 victory Sunday over the Seattle Seahawks.
''That game-winner is for the offense,'' Dawson said. ''Our defense makes the stop to get the ball back in overtime. Not only did our offense move the ball down the field, but they moved it into pretty makable range. That was huge. There's a tremendous amount of difference jogging out onto the field for whatever distance that was versus a 45-yarder in those conditions.
''The fact that we didn't just squat on the ball, we continued to push forward, that is huge. I can't overstate that enough.''

By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Monday, Nov 05, 2007
CLEVELAND: The question seemed innocuous enough, but the response said it all about how much the Browns put into Sunday's 33-30 overtime victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
Asked if this game was as sweet as he has had as a pro, tight end Kellen Winslow put his head down and cried.

Plain Dealer columnist Bud Shaw analyzes play of Cleveland Browns' Jamal Lewis

Monday, November 05, 2007Bud Shaw
Plain Dealer Columnist
They said Jamal Lewis was too hesitant in Baltimore, that his stutter steps cost the Ravens touchdowns, that near the goal line he looked to be auditioning for "So You Think You Can Dance."
Soon he didn't even make it on the field in those situations. And then he was out of Baltimore altogether.
"It's why I'm here," Lewis said.

Browns go underneath to go over Seattle

Monday, November 05, 2007 Joe Maxse

Plain Dealer Reporter
The Seattle safety net seemed to be working as it should on Sunday. After leading at the half, 21-9, against the Browns, the Seahawks looked to put together another decent 30 minutes and get back to the West Coast.
Obviously, the Browns had a different perspective as their 33-30 overtime win attests.
"Obviously, we didn't do what we needed to do," said Seattle free safety Brian Russell, who was facing his former team for the first time. "In the second half, they were checking down and going underneath. I can't take anything away from Derek Anderson or the Browns. [Anderson] is getting his opportunity. However, I felt we let one get away."

Cleveland Browns safety Sean Jones comes up with another big stop

Monday, November 05, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
For the second straight week, strong safety Sean Jones made a key fourth-down stop to help the Browns win the game.
Sunday, it came in overtime of the Browns' 33-30 victory over Seattle when Jones came off the edge to wrap up Seahawks running back Maurice Morris high for no gain. Linebacker Andra Davis came in underneath and helped finish the job. The Browns went on to win on Phil Dawson's 25-yard field goal.
"It was somewhat like last week," Jones said. "I grabbed him first and I was hoping everybody would come to the rescue. Fortunately I got the first contact in the backfield and we just got the stop."

A guy known for his "warrior" outburst in college, Winslow had never before shed tears in a postgame interview.

His mantra: "What, me worry?"
