Holly still sore over Ward hit Browns defender hopes to 'get' Steelers receiver
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Friday, Nov 09, 2007
BEREA: Daven Holly is glad he's got company on the list of Hines Ward's headhunting victims.
That doesn't make the Browns nickel back any less angry over the late hit the Steelers receiver delivered Sept. 9 that left Holly with a concussion and cost Ward a $5,000 fine.
''I'm looking to get every chance I can to compete and get him back,'' Holly said of Sunday's rematch at Heinz Field.

Browns don't have history on side, but ... Browns need victory to stoke Steelers rivalry
Published on Friday, Nov 09, 2007

The Browns have no chance to win in Pittsburgh this weekend.
Now don't go losing your Cocoa Krispies. This opinion is based solely on recent history. It was only a couple of years ago, after all, that the Browns declared the Steelers game ''just another game.'' That was the same week Alvin McKinley said the game meant more to the fans because they had been drinking all day leading up to kickoff. (OK, sure).
The Browns have played like it's just another game, too, losing 13-of-14 and providing many not-so-humorous moments in the pantheon of Browns history.
There was this season's opener, a 34-7 loss. Ouch.

Browns' guards feeling pain Steinbach, McKinney missing practice time as Steelers prepare blitz
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Friday, Nov 09, 2007
BEREA: Cleveland could face Pittsburgh's blitz-happy defense Sunday without both starting guards.
Left guard Eric Steinbach missed practice Thursday with a back strain. Browns coach Romeo Crennel said Steinbach was hurt about midway through Wednesday's session. The free agent from Cincinnati has been a huge upgrade playing alongside rookie left tackle Joe Thomas.
''He's day to day,'' Crennel said of Steinbach. ''Those backs, they're fickle. I'm going to rest him today and we'll see tomorrow.''
The chances of right guard Seth McKinney seeing action look slim after he suffered a shoulder injury last Sunday against Seattle. McKinney sat out for the second consecutive day and Crennel refused to give details about whether he has a separation in the shoulder.

Cleveland Browns under defensive pressure against Pittsburgh Steelers

Friday, November 09, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Browns' pass pressure on opposing quarterbacks has been virtually nonexistent.
They are tied for last in the NFL with seven sacks. Fine. They don't want Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger scrambling all over Heinz Field on Sunday, anyway.
"I think Ben is better throwing on the run than he is staying in the pocket," said Browns cornerback Daven Holly.

Attack, to break the Steelers' spell

Friday, November 09, 2007Bill Livingston
Plain Dealer Columnist
The first game when the Browns came back was against Pittsburgh. After the 43-0 nationally televised loss, some wondered why they bothered.
On the first punt of the first series this season, officials, trying not to hold their sides in laughter, noticed infractions on the mighty 15-yard effort by three Browns whom they named (Larry, Curly, and Moe?) and a fourth (Shemp?) whom they did not identify. Pittsburgh - Who else? - scored easily and went on to win, 34-7.
Cleveland did not win a single division game last year, so it was always something. But with the Browns, it's usually been Pittsburgh.

Cleveland Browns' starting guards may miss game against Pittsburgh Steelers

Friday, November 09, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
The depth of the Browns' resurgent offensive line may be severely tested Sunday in Pittsburgh.
Now it appears that both starting guards may miss the Steelers game in Heinz Field.
Left guard Eric Steinbach was held out of Thursday's practice after twisting his back about midway through Wednesday's practice. Right guard Seth McKinney missed his second day of practice with a shoulder injury suffered in the Seattle game.

Former Coventry High and Kent State star James Harrison leads Pittsburgh Steelers against Cleveland Browns

Friday, November 09, 2007Mary Schmitt Boyer
Plain Dealer Reporter
Pittsburgh -- Steelers linebacker James Harrison wishes everybody would just leave him alone.
Since his unbelievable performance in Pittsburgh's 38-7 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on "Monday Night Football," which earned him AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors, droves of reporters have been approaching him for interviews at every opportunity.
"Y'all bugging me," he told the crowd around his locker Thursday afternoon as the Steelers prepared to host the Browns on Sunday. "I'm getting a little tired of that."

Friday, November 9, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA Daven Holly remembers thinking something along the lines of ?Holy smokes.?

How could he not think of Hines Ward?s Sept. 9 cheap shot as the Browns gear up for a bus ride to Pittsburgh?

Dial up a video replay, and here?s what you see:

? Browns cornerback Leigh Bodden is trying to ride down Steelers runner Najeh Davenport late in a season opener at Cleveland. Safety Brodney Pool closes and delivers a cross-body blow that finishes Davenport.

Lewis knows he?s in for a Steeler battle
Friday, November 9, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA The big bad Steelers haven?t allowed a 100-yard runner in 58 games.

Jamal Lewis? response? Big deal.

In six of those games, Lewis has been the back held below the century mark. In three, Lewis? team won.

As he gears up for Sunday?s game at Pittsburgh, the Browns running back ? not surprisingly ? is thinking sock it to me, not century mark.

?We?ve taken our shots at each other,? Lewis said. ?I?ve had my days against them. They?ve had their days against me.

Passing on Peterson is fine because Thomas is apple of Savage's eye
Browns' GM fine with left tackle over NFL's leading rusher
UPDATE: 8:02 PM, Thursday, November 8, 2007
STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA Left tackle Joe Thomas is still the apple of Phil Savage?s eye.

But running back Adrian Peterson? Wow. What a piece of apple pie.

Peterson, a player Savage considered before spending a No. 3 overall draft pick on Thomas in April, is having an historic rookie year. He leads the NFL with 1,036 rushing yards, with Pittsburgh?s Willie Parker a distant second at 768.

The Browns have a modest 755 rushing yards with the trio of Jamal Lewis, Jason Wright and Jerome Harrison. Thomas? impact as an every-game starter is more evident in the passing game. Derek Anderson has been sacked only eight times and is on a pace to pass for more than 4,200 yards, which would be a franchise record.

ED SUBA JR | Akron Beacon Journal
Quarterback Derek Anderson walks off the field after the Browns' last possession in their 34-7 season-opening loss to the Steelers.

BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns have not added players to their roster. The coaching staff has not installed schemes or magic formulas in recent weeks.
Yet the Browns believe that when they play Sunday in Pittsburgh for a share of first place in the AFC North, the Steelers will face an opponent completely different from the one that lost the opener 34-7.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns guards Eric Steinbach and Seth McKinney missed practice yesterday.
McKinney suffered a shoulder injury last week against Seattle and his status for the game Sunday in Pittsburgh is in doubt.
Steinbach twisted his back in practice on Wednesday and is day to day.
"Those backs, they're fickle," coach Romeo Crennel said. "I'm going to rest him and we'll see (today)."

Cleveland Browns' Daven Holly questions style of Pittsburgh Steelers' Hines Ward

Saturday, November 10, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward defended himself Friday against charges by Browns cor nerback Daven Holly and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Bart Scott that he's a cheap-shot artist.
"I'm not a dirty player," Ward said Friday in a telephone interview. "If I was trying to hurt somebody, I'd go low and try to take their knees out. It's a violent enough game as it is. I don't go out and try to intentionally hurt people."
Ward was fined $5,000 for a late hit and unnecessary roughness on Holly in the Sept. 9 game at Cleveland Browns Stadium, a 34-7 Steelers win. The hit knocked Holly unconscious and out of the game with a concussion. Holly also sat out the next week against Cincinnati.

Cleveland Browns contend with injuries on offensive line

Saturday, November 10, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot

Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns starting left guard Eric Steinbach says he'll play against the Steelers, but right guard Seth McKinney has been ruled out.
"I'll be ready," said Steinbach, who left Wednesday's practice with a back injury and has missed the rest of the week. "I'll just take it one day at a time. This is a game where you want to do everything in your power and the trainers do, too. It's not that big of a deal and I'll be all right."
Steinbach is listed as questionable and did not practice Friday. As for resting it on Thursday, he said, "There was no sense in making it worse. I let it calm down."

Keep it simple or else
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
11/10/2007

BEREA -- This is not one of the game plans that comes to Rob Chudzinski like a bolt of lightning while he is asleep at 4 a.m., and then is immediately typed out and put in a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist just to make sure the Steelers don't get hold of it.

It's more like a game plan of a first-year pee-wee football coach, but it also is a plan much easier to coach than execute.

The mission for the Browns tomorrow in Heinz Field is don't turn the ball over, punt it away when they do not score and make the Steelers earn every point they get with long drives. First place in the AFC North is on the line.

Of course, no turnovers is a goal for every team every week, but protecting the ball is particularly important when facing the Steelers, Browns running back Jamal Lewis said.

''They want to capitalize on your mistakes,'' Lewis said yesterday. ''When you turn the ball over it's hard to win a game, especially against a team like this. They thrive on that. The best thing to do is get the (pass) protection right and hold onto the football. That's what we have to do.''

The Browns played the Steelers in the season opener at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Players and fans were fired up to get the season off in a positive way.
