Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Guard in question with an aching (Stein)back
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
11/10/2007

BEREA -- Left guard Eric Steinbach says he will not let a sore back keep him from playing against the Steelers tomorrow in Pittsburgh, but his status might not be determined until tomorrow morning.

Steinbach's back tightened up on him in practice Wednesday. He was held out of practice Thursday and though he said before practice yesterday that he would try to practice, he was held out for the second day in a row. Instead, he was in the trainer's room getting treatment on his back. He is listed as questionable on the Browns injury report issued yesterday.

''It's nothing serious. I'll be all right,'' Steinbach said. ''I had to let it calm down (Wednesday). It's no sense making it worse.''

Lennie Friedman was with the first team at left guard and Ryan Tucker with the first team at right guard. Tucker is replacing Seth McKinney, who is out with a shoulder injury.

I look at it this way...The Browns finished the first half of the season 5-3. They started the first half of the season by losing at home to Pittsburgh 34-7, with an inept QB in Frye. They won 5 of the next 7 games to gain respect, if you wanna call it that.

They begin the second part of the season by losing at Pittsburgh 31-28, with a capable QB in Anderson. Their next 7 games are all about respect, and a spot in the playoffs, if they deserve it. Schedule: @ 4-5 Ravens, 4-5 Texans, @ 4-5 Cardinals, @ 1-8 Jets, 5-4 Bills, @ 3-6 Bengals, 2-6 49ers. 5-3 is doable, but they are 0-1 so far.

Tell me you have seen an easier route... then try not to laugh! If the Browns are what I think they are, and this offense thing isn't a fluke, they will make the playoffs this season. They've got winnable games every week from now on. The only one of their last 8 that they shouldn't really have had a chance to win was today. And a blown 21-6 lead is hard to deal with, but yet again, they competed. I am pleasantly surprised, and ultimately very excited, about the strides this team has made in 10 weeks.

STEELERS 31, BROWNS 28
Browns let one slip away against Steelers

Cleveland builds up 21-9 halftime lead, only to watch Pittsburgh come roaring back to grab 3-point victory.

PITTSBURGH ? As they trudged to their locker room in silence late Sunday afternoon, the Cleveland Browns knew they had let one slip away.
And it hurt. It hurt a great deal.

"I didn't expect to lose this game," cornerback Leigh Bodden said. "Neither did anyone else in here. No moral victories. None of that."
Bidding for a share of first place in the AFC North Division, the Browns led the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-9 at halftime but did not score on offense the rest of the way while watching quarterback Ben Roethlisberger rally the Steelers to a 31-28 victory at Heinz Field.

McGinest takes blame for Roethlisberger's TD

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

PITTSBURGH ? Some of the Browns' signature stars refused comment after Sunday's 31-28 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Receiver Braylon Edwards and tight end Kellen Winslow were notably silent.
Veteran linebacker Willie McGinest not only took questions, he took the blame.

"I had my worst game as a Cleveland Brown," said McGinest, who joined the team last season. "I apologized to the guys. I'm strong, so put it on me."

NOT THIS TIME (OUT) Browns blow big lead, players share blame for loss to Steelers
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Monday, Nov 12, 2007
PITTSBURGH: Darnell Dinkins took the blame. So did Willie McGinest.
There was plenty to go around after the Browns blew a 15-point second-quarter lead and fell 31-28 to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday at Heinz Field.
After the battle for the lead in the AFC North came down to Phil Dawson's game-tying 52-yard field-goal try that fell short with six seconds left, return man Joshua Cribbs said the Browns would not let one person shoulder the burden.

To be true success, Browns must find way to beat Steelers Confusion and errors spoil game for Browns
Published on Monday, Nov 12, 2007

PITTSBURGH: It has gotten to this point for the Browns: No matter the circumstances, how they play, who is playing or whether they play in Cleveland, Pittsburgh or Davenport, Iowa, the Browns find a way to lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
So it went Sunday, as the Browns found a new way to blow a game against the Steelers: burning two timeouts challenging a play that was not overruled.
Figure that one.
There was much good ready to be said about the Browns this Sunday at the confluence, but in the end the mistakes led to a loss, and the mistakes overshadowed the good.
Whether it was a lack of poise, inexperience or just plain goofing up doesn't really matter. In the end, the Browns played a game that could have shown how far they've come since that blowout loss to the Steelers in the opener.
Instead they blew a big lead and lost again to this team in the most aggravating of ways.
The goof came after the Steelers' final

Steelers laud Browns Anderson, Cribbs win praise from foes happy to escape with victory
By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Monday, Nov 12, 2007
PITTSBURGH: One thing is sure: After their 31-28 victory over the Browns on Sunday at Heinz Field, the Pittsburgh Steelers realize this isn't the same team they pounded into submission in September.
''We haven't been in that situation before. It's the first game where we really had to come from behind,'' Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward said. ''We had all our guys in the huddle and healthy and I told the guys: 'This is what we wanted.'''
The Browns gave the Steelers almost more than they could handle in a thriller of a game in which they came within feet of a second overtime game in two weeks.
''They've got the same people. They're just playing better. Derek Anderson is doing a better job of getting the ball out and not sitting back there in the pocket,'' Steelers linebacker James Farrior said. ''His receivers are going up and making plays. I think that's probably the biggest difference.''

Cribbs sets return record Former KSU star gets fourth career kickoff return for a touchdown
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Monday, Nov 12, 2007
PITTSBURGH: In Saturday night's team meeting, Joshua Cribbs felt like he was sitting in church and the pastor was preaching directly to him.
When Browns coach Romeo Crennel said, ''Return game, we need a big return,'' Cribbs said his reaction was, ''I'm the returner, so he's talking to me.''
So Cribbs wrote ''Visualize the reality'' on his notepad and thought about the challenge the rest of the evening.
The powers of visualization of Cribbs, a former Kent State quarterback, must be strong. In the Browns' 31-28 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday at Heinz Field, Cribbs returned kickoffs 100 and 90 yards to score a touchdown and set up another.

Day of growing pains shouldn't cause panic

Monday, November 12, 2007Bud Shaw

Pittsburgh
- The problem with the two timeouts wasted on a failed replay challenge in Sunday's come-from-ahead loss was this: It wasn't even the leading example of the Browns' gas-guzzling inefficiency.
That honor goes to a previously forward-thinking offense suddenly thrust into reverse by a lack of purpose and poise in the second half. The odometer got rolled all the way back to September when white-knuckled Charlie Frye was at the wheel.

Cleveland Browns players share blame in loss to Pittsburgh Steelers

Monday, November 12, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Linebacker Willie McGinest apologized to the team after the 31-28 loss for what he described as "my worst game as a Cleveland Brown."
"I just told the guys, 'I'll never play like that again,' " said McGinest. "But I'm strong, so put it on me. I'm confident in myself. I know I'll come back and play hard."
McGinest was most upset about missing a fourth-quarter tackle on Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who scrambled for 10 yards on third down. Two plays later, Roethlisberger hit tight end Heath Miller with the game-winning 2-yard touchdown pass with 3:13 remaining.

Cleveland Browns reignite rivalry with Pittsburgh Steelers

Monday, November 12, 2007Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter
Pittsburgh- After a 34-7 beat-down of the Browns on Sept. 9, Steelers linebacker James Farrior wondered if a meeting between the teams had been relegated to just another game.
The Steelers, after all, had won eight in a row and 14 of 15 in the series.
In the week leading up to Sunday's game, Farrior went so far as to say Browns-Steelers would cease to be a rivalry if the Browns failed to win.

Cribbs' big plays not enough for big win

Monday, November 12, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Pittsburgh- Josh Cribbs was sitting in the special teams meeting room Saturday when coach Romeo Crennel came in and boomed, "Return game, we need a big return!" Suddenly, Cribbs saw the light.
"It was like when you go to church and you feel like the pastor's talking to you," said Cribbs. "I was like, 'I'm the returner. He's talking to me!' "
Cribbs took the challenge to heart and visualized taking it to the house.

Browns up big early, see Steelers rally; Dawson?s attempt to force OT just short
Monday, November 12, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

PITTSBURGH What to do with Sunday?s 31-28 loss to the Steelers?

Close, but in the end was that exploding cigar.

Brood over a 15th loss in 16 Pittsburgh games? Or build on a season still alive at 5-4, with a team so different than the one abused 34-7 by Pittsburgh just two months ago?

?Do both,? said Lawrence Vickers, whose touchdown helped the Browns to a 21-6 lead in the second quarter. ?When there?s pain, usually it makes you want to do something about it.?

There was nothing the Browns could do about the most painful play of the season.

Anderson is good early, not so good late
Monday, November 12, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

PITTSBURGH When Pittsburgh and Cleveland last played, the Browns went with Charlie Frye. Sunday afternoon at Heinz Field, they went with Charlie Dickens.

?It was,? Head Coach Romeo Crennel said, ?A tale of two halves.?

Like Derek Anderson was a have in the first half, and a have-not in the second.

Anderson threw for three touchdowns ? all in the first half ? in Cleveland?s 31-28 loss to the Steelers. But Cleveland?s quarterback, who caught fire three weeks ago, lost it after halftime. He completed just 6-of-19 passes for 43 yards in the second half, and the Browns? offense could muster just two first downs. Both of those came during a frantic and desperate last-minute drive.
