Lewis returns, but not on a roll
Thursday, November 15, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA Nine games in, the Jamal Lewis experiment isn?t adding up.

Yet the 28-year-old running back sees his recent performances as a metaphor for the big picture.

Never give up on the running game too soon. Keep shoveling him the rock.

?The game coming up at Baltimore,? Lewis said Wednesday, ?is like the last game at Pittsburgh. It all starts at the line of scrimmage.?

After running 11 yards on his first carry, Lewis got stopped cold. He had one other decent gain of 7 yards. On his 14 other carries, he gained 13 yards.

Back to where it all began for D.A.
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer

BEREA -- The Browns' surprising success on offense this season can be traced to a toe injury suffered by Baltimore starting quarterback Kyle Boller in the Ravens 2005 season opener.

When team doctors told Brian Billick that Boller would be out for six weeks or more, the Ravens coach was forced to get another quarterback because the only healthy ones on the roster were career backup Anthony Wright and a sixth-round rookie from Oregon State named Derek Anderson.

Kordell Stewart was signed to back up Wright three days after Boller was injured. Patrick Johnson, a veteran wide receiver, was released for salary related reasons.

Adding Stewart left the Ravens with four quarterbacks on the roster, but with only Wright and Stewart able to contribute so early in the season.

They lost to Tennessee, 25-10, four days after signing Stewart, who was listed as inactive for the game against the Titans.

Billick prepared to kick Cribbs out of the game
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
11/15/2007

BEREA -- Ravens coach Brian Billick is going to order Matt Stover to kick the ball away from Josh Cribbs, judging by what he said during a conference call yesterday when asked about the Browns' dynamic kick returner.

Cribbs returned one kick 90 yards to set up a touchdown against the Steelers last week and scored on a 100-yard touchdown return. He scored on a 99-yard kick return in Oakland and returned a kick 85 yards against the Bengals to set up another touchdown.

''What I've seen, you prefer to kick away from him,'' Billick said. ''He's a strong combination of strength and speed. He has the ability to run through a tackle and get to a hole with excellent acceleration. He's been very impactful for them.''

Billick is less inclined to punt away from Cribbs. The Patriots tried avoiding Cribbs. They kicked off out of bounds one time and shanked two punts out of bounds.

Like the Browns' Phil Dawson, Stover is more concerned about placing his kicks than trying to kick the laces off the ball. Sam Koch, the Ravens' punter, has a net average of 36.5 yards. It ranks 21st in the NFL.

Offense wants atonement
Unit was shut down in second half by Steelers

Browns quarterback Derek Anderson passed for only 123 yards Sunday in a 31-28 loss to the Steelers.

BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns offense will try not to let last weekend's frustration turn into this weekend's hangover.
Cleveland, coming off a 31-28 loss to Pittsburgh, is 3-0 when it scores 30 points or more and has not lost two in a row all season. Offensive consistency is the main reason.
"I think the offense puts pressure on themselves," coach Romeo Crennel said. "They want to score every time they get the ball. There's no number that you have to score this amount of points. Let's win the game. We're going to do whatever we can to win the game."

Browns seek to amend passing game Rutigliano doesn't want repeat of Steelers' defense by Ravens on Sunday

By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Friday, Nov 16, 2007
BEREA: Former Browns coach Sam Rutigliano had a DVD in hand and was eager to study how the Pittsburgh Steelers shut down the Browns' passing game in the second half Sunday.
Rutigliano thought he already knew, and he figures the Browns will see more of the same when they visit the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday for an important AFC North game.
''Baltimore will do exactly what Pittsburgh did,'' Rutigliano said. ''This is the biggest copycat league. They'll see what Pittsburgh did and spend the entire week on it.''

Baltimore Ravens' QB gamble now returns for Cleveland Browns

Friday, November 16, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
"We took a gamble and we lost."
That is the concession that Baltimore Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome makes in the case of Derek Anderson, who returns Sunday to his former team riding high with the playoff-contending Browns.
The Browns claimed Anderson in the second week of 2005 when the Ravens waived him for the purpose of sneaking him onto their practice squad.
"He was standing here in my office when I called the league office that day to see if he were claimed," Newsome recalled.
But did Newsome ever think Anderson would develop into the triggerman of a high-powered offense, distributing touchdown passes at a rate higher than any quarterback in Browns history?
"That's like asking me if I thought Adalius Thomas was going to be the player he turned out to be," Newsome said.

BROWNS INSIDER
Ravens hurting on defense

Friday, November 16, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Without starting cornerbacks Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle the past two games, the Baltimore Ravens gave up five touchdown passes to Pittsburgh and seven field goals to Cincinnati.
This week, McAlister is expected to be back, but Rolle has been ruled out with an undisclosed illness.
Meanwhile, the Browns' offense is champing at the bit after a pathetic second half in Pittsburgh on Sunday.
"Any team who doesn't have their starting corners out there, yet alone two Pro Bowl corners, it's going to hurt," said receiver Braylon Edwards.
"I think this whole team is salivating. After coming off last week, I think we're ready for this one."
Rolle didn't play in the first meeting in Cleveland. His replacement, Corey Ivy, was beat for a 78-yard TD catch by Edwards.

GM Savage has a good eye
He?s found hidden gems for both Ravens and Browns

BEREA Phil Savage loves those sleepers.

In Cleveland, undrafted Joshua Cribbs and waiver-wire steal Derek Anderson are helping turn around a franchise.

When Savage was Ozzie Newsome?s right-hand man, Baltimore came up with similar hidden gems in Adalius Thomas and Bart Scott. Thomas is helping New England make the splash of the decade now. Scott is hanging in there with the Ravens.

At Cleveland last December, Scott turned a loss into a win by sacking Charlie Frye to force a late interception. Scott represented a 13-3 team in the Pro Bowl.

Browns' GM hints Josh Cribbs will do more
UPDATE: 11:42 AM, Thursday, November 15, 2007
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA As Phil Savage finished another scouting mission today, he thought back to a road trip that led to accidental gold for the Cleveland Browns.

Savage was Ozzie Newsome?s right hand man in Baltimore in 2002, when the Ravens sent a scouting party to Marshall to assess quarterback Byron Leftwich.

The group, including T.J. McCreight and James Harris, wound up seeing Leftwich against Kent State.

?At the end of the game,?? Savage said, ?James Harris turned to T.J. and said, ?I?m not so sure that (Kent quarterback Joshua) Cribbs isn?t the best player on the field.

?In a lot of ways, that?s almost proving to be true.??

Savage and McCreight wound up with the Browns in 2005. Their discoveries when they were with Baltimore attracted them to Cribbs. Savage told the story this morning on the Browns? AM radio affiliate, WTAM.

Five years later, heading into a game at Baltimore, Cribbs leads the NFL with 1,230 kick return yards, including efforts of 90 and 100 yards Sunday at Pittsburgh.

Leftwich became the seventh overall pick of the 2003 draft. Cribbs went undrafted in 2005, scaring away some teams because of character concerns.

Savage signed him as a free agent with potential to learn a role other than quarterback.

Tale of two linebackers
Marathon men McGinest, Lewis contrast in styles
Friday, November 16, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Whose football life is better at this stage of twilight?

Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis gets all the hype.

Cleveland linebacker Willie McGinest has all those rings.

Lewis is sure to ride his eight Pro Bowls into the Hall of Fame.

An infrequent Pro Bowler, McGinest?s ticket to Canton is along the lines of: ?Somebody from those three Super Bowl winners has to go in.?

Lewis, whose wild side worried 1996 drafters, was Baltimore?s second pick in the first round, No. 26 overall, in the team?s first year out of Cleveland. At 32, he remains awash in superlatives.

Just the other day, Ravens Head Coach Brian Billick said, ?The play of Ray Lewis has been spectacular.?

Yet Lewis? bluster is being wasted on a team in decline.

Browns would rather face McNair
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
11/16/2007

BEREA -- All things being equal, the Browns would prefer facing Steve McNair when they play the Ravens on Sunday in Baltimore, but that isn't going to happen.

Kyle Boller will start at quarterback because McNair is out with a partially dislocated left shoulder. Boller, kicked around like a crushed paper cup by media, Ravens fans and opposing defenses most of his career since being picked 19th in the first round in 2003, does one thing well.

That one thing causes the Browns concern.

''Boller throws the ball downfield better,'' defensive back Daven Holly said yesterday. ''McNair distributes the ball quicker. He's quicker with his decisions. Boller holds onto it and has a stronger arm. He scrambles better.''

McNair was being booed out of M&T Bank Stadium before the injury to his non-throwing shoulder made the decision to switch to Boller easy for coach Brian Billick. The Ravens are near the bottom of the league in takeaway-giveaway at minus seven, and McNair is a major reason why.

Browns notebook:

Lewis hoping for more

Browns running back Jamal Lewis insists he's not running out of gas or bothered by a foot injury. His production is down, he says, because of a lack of opportunities.
Overall, Lewis' numbers this season look solid (515 yards, six touchdowns). But they are padded by his 216 yards in week two against Cincinnati.

Defensive end who has played big part in turnaround hurt in practice

Just when it seemed run defense was finally becoming solid enough to make opposing running backs earn the yards they gained, the Browns on Friday learned they might be without a key player in the turnaround.
Shaun Smith, a starting defensive end the last four games, missed practice Friday with a knee injury. He is listed as questionable for the game against the Ravens on Sunday in Baltimore.

When you've had success running the football in the past like I've had, it comes from being consistent in the running game," Lewis said. "You can't shy away from it and you can't get discouraged with 1- and 2-yard runs. I don't. We know 1- and 2-yard runs turn into fives and sixes (later in the game).

Hey Jamal...we only get 4 downs. 2.8 yards per carry isn't going to cut it. I'd rather go with a combo of Harrison and Wright and bring in Jamal in the red zone.
