Edwards? big catch atones for early drop

CLEVELAND Romeo Crennel talks about the ?good D.A. and the bad D.A.,? referring to his 25-year-old quarterback.

Well, there?s some of that polarity in his 25-year-old wide receiver, too.

Braylon Edwards? inconsistent streak continued Sunday when he fumbled after a catch on the Browns? fifth play.

They were lucky not to get hit with another first-quarter turnover as well. Derek Anderson?s pass over the middle went in and out of the hands of Baltimore safety Dawan Landry.

With 3:06 remaining in the first quarter, Edwards made a very damaging drop, costing the Browns what would have been a 19-yard gain to the 5.

Follow the bouncing ball, right past Ravens

BALTIMORE Day had turned into night on the Inner Harbor. A gust of wind ? perhaps a nod from the football gods ? kicked up as Phil Dawson?s 51-yard game-tying field goal floated into the chilly Baltimore air.

End over endless end, the ball seemed to hang long enough for two franchises to shake hands on the way past each other. The delayed call by the officials? Just the NFL?s way of winking at the Ravens on the way past.

The ball kissed the left upright and rattled around the goalpost like a ping-pong ball waiting to settle in a goldfish bowl. For once ? and finally ? it found the fish that swam with the Browns.

What happened Sunday in front of Art Modell?s eyes, poked Brian Billick in his.

X-Box: Unexpected difference maker
Monday, November 19, 2007

X-Man: Browns left tackle Joe Thomas.

The background The Browns debated on using a No. 12 overall draft pick for defensive lineman Haloti Ngata in 2006. They eventually traded the spot to Baltimore, which pounced on Ngata. On Sunday, Ngata lined up several times against Joe Thomas, Cleveland?s Round 1 pick this year.

The deed During the game?s first series, Ngata slugged Thomas on the side of the helmet at the end of a play. Ngata was penalized 15 yards and faces additional discipline after a league review.

The effect Ornery and tough, Thomas was unfazed by Ngata. He helped the Browns answer Baltimore?s bad-boy physicality against one of the league?s best run defenses. Jamal Lewis gave the Browns 92 yards on 22 carries against a defense that has allowed two 100-yard rushing performances in 37 games,

Pool report

The Browns played their season in reverse as the game took shape. Their defense sparkled. Their offense stumbled.

Cleveland led 231-38 in first-half offense, but penalties, a dropped pass and a killer interception warped the scoreboard.

A 13-7 halftime lead disappeared when the defense collapsed to start the second half. A drive capped by Willis McGahee?s touchdown gave Baltimore a 14-13 lead.

Stanchion gets spot in Browns infamy
Monday, November 19, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BALTIMORE In the end, they got it right. In Cleveland, that?s all they cared about.

In a matter of minutes Sunday evening at M&T Bank Stadium, the Browns both lost and won a game. Phil Dawson died a thousand deaths, Cleveland?s season came crashing down with a crushing loss to the Ravens and then ? poof ? The Stanchion took its rightful place in Cleveland Browns lore.

That?s right, the stanchion ? the technical name of the curved bar that holds the crossbar and supports the goalposts.

Dawson?s improbable 51-yard game-tying kick kissed off the left upright, broke the plane of the crossbar and clanked off the stanchion and back onto the field.

Field judge Jim Saracino looked at back judge Keith Ferguson, then signaled the kick was no good. Dawson?s heart sank into his stomach.

?It was crazy,? Head Coach Romeo Crennel said.

From agony to elation, Browns beat Ravens in overtime
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
11/19/2007

BALTIMORE -- When this season is over, whenever it ends for the Browns, the beginning of it will be traced to a frozen moment at the end of regulation yesterday when a 51-yard field goal attempt by Phil Dawson hit the left upright and then seemingly hit the crossbar and bounced back onto the field.

Everything that happened before yesterday was a prelude to yesterday.

One official waved his arms, signaling the kick was no good and the game was over.

The Browns groaned for having lost by a field goal for the second week in a row, this time 30-27. The Ravens jumped and yelled in jubilation. Fans cheered as they headed home.

The groans and the cheers were premature. When M&T Bank Stadium emptied for a second time, the Browns were 33-30 victors in overtime in one of the most improbable finishes in franchise history.

Cribbs takes advantage of deep kicks
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
11/19/2007

BALTIMORE -- No one in M&T Bank Stadium was more surprised than Josh Cribbs yesterday when Matt Stover kicked the ball to him with 26 seconds to play and the Ravens nursing a 30-27 lead.

Cribbs was around the 10, expecting a squib kick, but Stover hit the ball hard and Cribbs caught it at the 4. The return took 10 seconds off the clock as Cribbs dragged tacklers with him to the Browns 43. The play set up the game-tying field goal at the end of regulation.

''I was ready for them to not kick it to me,'' Cribbs said. ''I was preparing for them to kick it to Darnell Dinkins. I could tell by his last two steps he was going to kick deep. I was shifting back to catch the ball and thinking, ?What's he doing?'

''It's not that they don't have a good team. They have a very good team. But we have great blockers up front. Our wedge hits guys.''

Cribbs returned seven kicks for 245 yards, a team record. He has 1,475 yards in kick returns this season. The Ravens knew what kind of kick returner he was, but continued to challenge him.

BALTIMORE -- Browns quarterback Derek Anderson said he was congratulating former teammate Kyle Boller and wishing him well. Cleveland coach Romeo Crennel already had shaken hands with Ravens counterpart Brian Billick. Approximately half of Baltimore's players were in what they thought was the winning locker room when referee Pete Morelli called them back onto the field for overtime.

Browns notebook
Kick could prompt rule change

Tuesday, November 20, 2007 2:30 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
BEREA, Ohio -- Phil Dawson's field goal that forced overtime the Browns' 33-30 victory over the Baltimore Ravens could lead to a rule change next season.

Field goals are one of the few plays that are not reviewable in the NFL. Two referees standing under the crossbar in the end zone rarely miss a call or disagree on whether an attempt is successful.
"It almost never happens," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an e-mail response to Cleveland media. "But it will be reviewed by the Competition Committee in the offseason as to whether there should be a distinction under replay for this type of situation where a field goal try hits something."
Dawson's kick hit the left upright, bounced off the support bar and fell backward into the end zone, causing confusion among the officiating crew. After approximately 10 minutes of deliberating, the kick was ruled good, and the game went to overtime tied at 30.

Associated PressMatt Schaub and the Texans head into Sunday's game against the Browns with a 5-5 record.

The Browns and Houston Texans are expansion brethren, if not rivals.
Being the league's 31st and 32nd franchises -- the Browns were reborn in 1999, the Texans started in 2002 -- puts them on somewhat the same plane.
While the Browns have one playoff ap pearance under their belts and are pursuing another, the Texans still strive to climb over the .500 mark. A defeat to the Browns in the final game of the 2003 season was a franchise setback for the Texans. It cost them an 8-8 record and triggered eventual changes in the front office and coaching staff.

NFL return men are a fraternity of the fearless who share a certain curiosity about each other.
"How else are they using him," Dino Hall asked about Josh Cribbs. "Running back? Wide receiver?"
Not enough is the short answer.
Hall, who returned kicks and punts for the Browns from 1979 to '83, met Cribbs for the first time Saturday.

Texans gearing up passing game for Browns
Wednesday, November 21, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA The Texans proved Sunday they can toast a teetering secondary.

On Sunday, the Browns? 31st-ranked pass defense will have plenty to worry about.

Wideout Andre Johnson, Kellen Winslow Jr.?s former Miami Hurricane teammate, is back from a knee sprain. He looked like a former No. 3 overall pick against the Saints, catching six passes, one a 73-yard touchdown, in a win.

BEREA This time, Houston and Cleveland collide in a game with meaning beyond ?because they have to.?

The Texans, who have never been as good as their current 5-5 after 10 games, beat 2006 NFC South champ New Orleans on Sunday.

Cleveland is 6-4 after knocking off defending AFC North champ Baltimore.

This happy new year for the Browns and Texans defies the mood of New Year?s Eve. On Dec. 31, 2006, they were two sadsack expansion teams drowning their sorrows against each other.

OVER THE FALLEN WARRIOR Browns defenders Antwan Peek (left) and Robaire Smith meet after Smith sacks Ravens quarterback Kyle Boller during the third quarter of Sunday?s game. The Browns finished with six sacks en route to a 33-30 overtime victory that continued the team?s hopes for a potential AFC wild-card playoff berth.

BEREA The Browns are used to being the bums.

Starting with a January 2003 playoff loss at Pittsburgh and stretching through this year?s bad kickoff loss to the Steelers, their record was 19-47. Now they?re running with the bullies.

They?ve won four of their last five and led 21-6 in the one that didn?t work out.

Only seven teams have a better record than their 6-4.
