Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Couple of kicks, and Browns are talking playoffs
Tuesday, November 20, 2007
Repository sports writer Todd Porter

For the second time, Joe Jurevicius walked off the field at M&T Bank Stadium. But this time, Jurevicius, the Browns captain and native son, wore a smile like the cat that just ate the canary.

Or the Raven.

Inside the locker room, Robaire Smith sat in his uniform, stunned and happy. Perhaps he was trying to understand what just happened to the NFL?s most hapless franchise. Jamal Lewis also sat in front of his locker wearing his shoulder pads, well after Phil Dawson?s overtime field goal gave the Browns an improbable 33-30 win at Baltimore.

Bad room, good win; Lewis sees life from the visitors? side

BEREA Running back Jamal Lewis had spent eight years in the palatial home locker room in the Ravens? stadium.

As a Brown after Sunday?s 33-30 overtime win, he dressed in a closet that passes for the visitors? locker room.

Maybe it?s Art Modell?s nod to old Cleveland Stadium, home of the most reviled visitors? locker room in NFL history.

Modell has been replaced as Ravens owner by Steve Biscotti.

Browns still bouncing over win

Crennel feels fortunate that officials made call on game-tying field goal
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Tuesday, Nov 20, 2007
BEREA: Contrary to what one reporter suggested Monday, Browns coach Romeo Crennel did not award a game ball to referee Pete Morelli after Sunday's 33-30 overtime victory at Baltimore.
''I didn't have Pete on my list,'' Crennel said, chuckling.
Perhaps back judge Keith Ferguson should have been on the list. He was one of the two officials standing under the uprights during Phil Dawson's 51-yard, game-tying field-goal attempt as time expired in regulation. It was Ferguson who saw Dawson's kick hit the left upright, bounce onto the curved joint that attaches the crossbar to the support and carom back out the front.

Browns face a lot of competition for a spot in playoffs

Thursday, November 22, 2007 3:29 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- For the first time in five years, Cleveland is in the NFL playoff race late in the season.
The Browns (6-4) still have a chance to catch Pittsburgh (7-3) in the AFC North, but the Steelers own the head-to-head tiebreaker, making the wild card Cleveland's most likely ticket to the postseason.

Browns notebook
Like Browns, Texans have own young-gun QB

Thursday, November 22, 2007 3:20 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- On Sunday in Browns Stadium, there will be a 6-foot-5, rocket-armed quarterback who is playing well in his first season as a starter.
No, not the Browns' Derek Anderson. We're talking about Matt Schaub of the Houston Texans.
Two of the league's young, up-and-coming quarterbacks will be on display when the Browns (6-4) play host to Houston (5-5).

Injuries to linemen make Crennel juggle
If Shaffer's problem is minor, no problem, but major shuffle still possible
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Thursday, Nov 22, 2007
BEREA: Browns coach Romeo Crennel has a short-term plan and a long-term plan depending on the severity of a knee injury right tackle Kevin Shaffer suffered Sunday.
Shaffer said someone rolled on the side of his left knee in the first or second quarter of the 33-30 overtime victory over the Baltimore Ravens, but he was able to make it through the game.
''I didn't really realize how bad it was until after the game,'' he said.
Shaffer missed practice Wednesday and plans to test the knee in practice today but might not do much.
He sounded somewhat ominous when he said, ''This week or next week, I don't know if it's going to change. It's one of those things that could go any way. I hope it doesn't hold me out at all.''

Banged-up Browns wary of Texans
If Wright misses game with injured knee, Crennel will turn to Holly and McDonald in secondary
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Thursday, Nov 22, 2007
BEREA: Rookie Eric Wright could miss significant time with a sprained right knee.
Leigh Bodden hasn't looked like himself of late, perhaps because he has been playing with a back injury.
Considering the Browns' cornerback situation, the Browns must be even more wary of the visiting Houston Texans on Sunday.

PD File PhotoVeteran LB Willie McGinest recently spoke out on behalf of the players and coaches, "who've been there before."

When the Browns were 3-3 at their bye week, players talked about making the playoffs. They are 3-1 since then and yet the talk has quieted to barely a whisper.
There is a reason for that.

Joe Jurevicius

BEREA, Ohio -- Despite his lanky 6-foot-5 frame, Cleveland Browns receiver Joe Jurevicius has always remained in the shadows.

Throughout his decade-long career, Jurevicius was never the No. 1 receiver. He has never been to a Pro Bowl, but has lasted longer than some players who have.

Explosive kick returns make Cribbs a valuable man to have

MANY HAPPY RETURNS Joshua Cribbs? 449 kickoff return yards against Pittsburgh and Baltimore are the second most over a two-game period in NFL history.

BEREA In the buzz of the moment, the answer seemed knee-jerk obvious.

?If you had to vote for a Browns MVP right now,?? one writer said to two others who were jogging down a staircase to the locker room after Sunday?s wild finish in Baltimore, ?who would it be???

Joshua Cribbs, the other two said.

Cribbs, the man who brought it up, agreed.

The question has settled into Thanksgiving week. The buzz has dissolved into the tension of a game that is no gimme, against a decent Houston team.

Browns refuse to talk playoffs
Crennel wants players to focus on each game instead of looking ahead
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Friday, Nov 23, 2007
BEREA: Coach Romeo Crennel doesn't need to outfit the Browns with earplugs or blinders, although owner Randy Lerner would probably write the check if he did.
Crennel thinks he and his five captains can keep the 6-4 team from looking ahead and getting caught up in playoff talk.
That would seem to be a tough task since the Browns are bidding for their first postseason appearance since 2002. Their remaining six opponents had a combined record of 22-38 going into Thursday and none were better than 5-5. They finish the season against the Cincinnati Bengals (3-7) and San Francisco 49ers (2-8).

Brodney Pool sets off on a 100-yard interception return Sunday in the Browns' 33-30 overtime win over the Ravens.

BEREA, Ohio -- Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham called the Cleveland Browns' Sean Jones and Brodney Pool "play-making safeties" earlier this season.
But they weren't living up to the billing the first eight games.
Since then, Jones has 16 tackles and an interception and Pool has two interceptions and a half-sack in the past two games.
They combined for a crucial play in a victory last week over the Baltimore Ravens. Jones blitzed quarterback Kyle Boller and caused an interception that Pool returned 100 yards for a touchdown.

Cleveland Browns cornerback Wright ruled out for Houston game but plans to return soon

Browns cornerback Eric Wright has been ruled out for the Browns game against Houston on Sunday with a sprained right knee. He will be replaced by Daven Holly.
But Wright said the injury isn't as bad as he thought it was when he went down on the Browns' first defensive play in Baltimore last Sunday and had to be carted to the locker room.
He said "it's day to day" and he doesn't know where it came from that he'll be out 4-6 weeks, which has been reported by WKYC-TV Ch. 3 . "I never said that," said Wright.
