SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS Belichick

A quest for absolute perfection

Wednesday, October 03, 2007 Tony Grossi

Plain Dealer Reporter
Over the 2003 and 2004 seasons, the New England Patriots rang up a record of 34-4, an audacious run that included 21 wins in a row and two Super Bowl championships.
And to think that coach Bill Belichick's current club, which plays host to the Browns on Sunday, is being hailed as his best one yet.
What separates the 2007 Patriots from Belichick's three championship editions (they also won in 2001) is an offense that cannot be overstated as unstoppable.

McGinest brings plays, confidence to Browns defense
Tuesday, October 2, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Willie McGinest?s return from back surgery means less playing time for Antwan Peek, a fellow outside linebacker. It also means they have a greater chance to pull an upset no one will believe ? against McGinest?s old team.

McGinest, Peek says, is the kind of player the Browns need if they?re going to beat the runaway Patriots.

?He?s not always looking to be above everybody,?? Peek, 27, said of McGinest, 35. ?He looks at himself as equal to everyone else. He wants to see everyone do well.

?I come from a team where they weren?t like that, down in Houston.??

This coming from the same guy who wanted to cut Cribbs after the first preseason game. I wish I had a dollar for every post of yours that makes me say WTF, I'd be a rich man. If Anderson keeps playing like this and Quinn sits for the rest of the season it will be a good year for the Brown.

Another opinion

Maybe it was because Anderson looked a bit shaky in the second half, and they didn't want to risk him throwing into sextuple coverage from his own 10 yard line.

Maybe it's because they just wanted to keep pounding Jamal.

Maybe it's because they were completely unfamiliar on what the hell to do when leading by that many points in the third quarter, and didn't have a clue how to respond. Sorta like my feelings if it ever got to near the end of the month, and I actually still had money in my bank account that my children hadn't found a way to confiscate...hard to figure out how you'd act in Virgin Territory when you've never been there.

But I'm not jumping on the newly created bandwagon that's stating that Anderson should remain the QB all year, a la Jon Kitna keeping Carson Palmer on the bench for Palmer's rookie season.

10 of 18 with one ugly pick and several "where the hell is he throwing it?" passes does not make one Joe Montana

Even Belichick's backers must now have doubts

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Thursday, October 04, 2007

Unless he's a raving lunatic like that Oklahoma State guy, I seldom judge a football coach by how he deals with the media or whether he looks down at the floor when he speaks.
Bill Belichick had the Browns in the playoffs in 1994 and that, to a Browns fan, was a good thing. Who cared what he said or how he said it? He got the job done.

Steinbach calls Pats 'beatable'

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Thursday, October 04, 2007
BEREA ? Cleveland Browns guard Eric Steinbach did not mean to provide bulletin-board material, but the New England Patriots might be inclined to take it as such.
"They're beatable," Steinbach declared Wednesday. "That's why they have this league. It can be done."

Patriots' Brady has last laugh Picked 199th in 2000 draft, QB an opponent to fear
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Thursday, Oct 04, 2007
BEREA: Tom Brady sloughed off the slight of being the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, because so many years have passed.
But in the previous breath, he had recalled that the Browns selected Spergon Wynn ahead of him in the sixth round.

Winslow update
Crennel said tight end Kellen Winslow's left shoulder separation will be a lingering injury. Winslow was hurt on the final play Sept. 23 against the Oakland Raiders.
''That's something he is going to have to deal with all year,'' Crennel said.
He said the Oct. 21 bye week should give Winslow a chance to strengthen the shoulder. But Crennel is concerned that Winslow might not make it through the season.
''We're going to try to do everything we can to keep him out there, but if he's not there, then we'll go on with the next guy,'' Crennel said. ''They're not going to cancel the season.''

Joshua Cribbs was named AFC special teams player of the month. He leads the league with a 34.3 average on kickoff returns. He is the Browns' first monthly winner since Tim Couch was selected the top rookie in October 1999. . . . Braylon Edwards is among the nominees in a best-dressed player poll conducted by Sports Illustrated. Vote on the NFL home page of si.com. . . . Participating fully in practice were linebacker Willie McGinest (back), linebacker Antwan Peek (foot) and punter Dave Zastudil (oblique). Limited were Winslow, guard Eric Steinbach (stinger) and defensive end Orpheus Roye (knee). Patriots running back Laurence Maroney, who sat out against the Bengals with a groin injury, was among those limited.

Belichick not overlooking Browns

JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
10/04/2007

BEREA -- The relentless Patriot Machine is coming off a Monday night game in Cincinnati and in 10 days plays the undefeated Cowboys in Dallas. It stands to reason New England might look past the Browns Sunday.

Except for the Belichick Factor. Bill Belichick, head coach in New England since 2000 and the former head of football espionage until the NFL caught one of his underlings taping the Jets' defensive signals last month, will not allow his team to take the Browns lightly. The Browns head to Foxboro fresh off a convincing 27-13 upset of the Ravens.

''Cincinnati is behind us and Cleveland is out in front,'' Belichick said yesterday in a teleconference. ''We certainly have a lot of work to do getting ready for the Browns. They're an explosive team. They have a lot of new faces since the last time we saw that team.''

Browns respect Patriots but aren't quaking

Thursday, October 4, 2007 3:35 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns haven't seen a defense as good or as complex as the New England Patriots', but they're not intimidated.
Cleveland's offense, ranked sixth in the NFL, will try to solve New England's No. 1-rated defense Sunday in Foxborough, Mass.
Four teams have tried and failed. None has scored more than 14 points against the Patriots, whose average margin of victory is 25 points.

Josh Cribbs' September to remember didn't go unnoticed by the NFL.

Cleveland Browns defense lauded by New England Patriots

Thursday, October 04, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
The NFL single-season record for completion percentage by a quarterback is 70.55. Through four games, New England's Tom Brady is completing 79.2 percent of his passes.
"Almost unheard-of," exclaimed Browns linebacker Kamerion Wimbley.
The NFL single-season record for receiving touchdowns is 22. New England's Randy Moss is on pace for 28.
"Phenomenal," Wimbley said.
The Browns have given up 12 touchdown passes in four games - highest number in the league.
Yet there was Patriots coach Bill Belichick on a Wednesday conference call insisting: "Cleveland's a team that presents a lot of challenges, in terms of throwing the ball. It'll be very competitive to throw the ball against the Browns' defense."

By Sean McClelland

BEREA ? New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is the idol of many. And who among his peers, with the possible exception of Peyton Manning, doesn't envy him?
Browns quarterback Derek Anderson, a fellow sixth-round draft pick, regards Brady as an inspiration.

BROWNS ANALYSIS
Cleveland Browns offensive line not only better, but will improve

Friday, October 05, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
What's the best thing about the Browns' offensive line through four games?
That it's on pace to give up just 28 sacks, the fewest in a season since 1994?
That it's finally an asset and not a liability?
