Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Learning process can be frustrating
Monday, October 8, 2007
By TODD PORTER

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.

Watching the Browns compete against the Patriots, king of the NFL, was like watching a lion paw at a rubber steak. New England, without many - if any - weaknesses, roared when it smelled blood.

On Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium, the chase never really was on. Sure, Cleveland rose from the ashes once, perhaps twice, but the Patriots stamped out Cleveland's kindling before oxygen could breathe on the flames.

BROWN NOTEBOOK

Injury report

Through five games, the Browns have had relatively good luck with the injury bug. That changed Sunday when three starters left early.

Running back Jamal Lewis injured his foot after his first carry but said he believes he has a good chance to play Sunday against Miami.

Wide receiver Joe Jurevicius injured his knee but walked without the help of crutches in the locker room.

Safety Brodney Pool left with a thigh contusion.

Head Coach Romeo Crennel didn't shed any light on if any of the injuries would linger.

McGinest cheered by Patriots' fans

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. The Patriots buttered up Browns linebacker Willie McGinest on Sunday.

The ex-Patriot's body language as he waved to the crowd said the applause went down nice and smooth.

If he goes into the Hall of Fame, he won't request that an orange helmet be fitted over his bronze bust. He played in New England for 12 years, a member of four Super Bowl teams.

THE END ZONE: MOSS QUIET, BUT ...
Monday, October 8, 2007

Randy Moss still has a monster season going with 34 catches for 551 yards and seven TDs. The Browns' defensive plan keyed on taming him, leading to a three-catch, 46-yard day.

"Moss had been killing people, and we didn't want him to kill us, so we died by the hands of somebody else," Browns Coach Romeo Crennel said.

Patriots Offensive Coordinator Joshua McDaniels had Tom Brady focus on tight end Ben Watson, the last pick of the 2004 first round.

Watson, who had a career day with six catches for 107 yards, showed his athleticism in beating safety Sean Jones for 25-yard touchdown that ruined a Cleveland comeback.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Jamal Lewis is optimistic he will not be down for long after getting knocked out of the game with a foot injury on the first play yesterday.

Lewis said he feels pain on the bottom of his right foot. He dressed after the game and slipped on his shoes without wearing a boot or immobilizer on his injured foot.

''I came off the field and told the trainers what I felt,'' Lewis said. ''After we came in here and looked at it we said to cool out. We'll evaluate it (today). I think it's going to be all right. We just didn't want to go out and do anything crazy.''

Lewis is hopeful of playing against the Dolphins next Sunday. He said he sprained his foot at the beginning of an 11-yard run. X-rays were negative. Lewis said the trainers have prescribed rest and ice.

Picked to lose

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Browns flew to this historic part of the country, hoping to make a little history themselves by knocking off one of the best teams in football the same they disposed of the Ravens a week earlier.

Instead, on an overcast afternoon yesterday in Gillette Stadium, the Browns, or more specifically Derek Anderson, repeated a part of history from this season they would rather blot out.

Players livid at Patriots' Vrabel

By Tom Withers
Contributing Writer

Tuesday, October 09, 2007
BEREA ? The New England Patriots are unbeaten, not unblemished.
At least one of them is dirty to Cleveland Browns guard Eric Steinbach.

Irritated over what he thought was a cheap shot in the closing seconds of Sunday's 34-17 loss, Steinbach called Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel "classless" on Monday.
Steinbach felt Vrabel purposely dived at the knees of rookie tackle Joe Thomas' legs with 11 seconds remaining on a play that was stopped when Browns quarterback Derek Anderson spiked the ball.

Miami needs QB now
Tuesday, October 9, 2007
By STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA Quinn and Ginn on the same field? Probably not.

While the Dolphins will face the Browns on Sunday with Cleveland native Ted Ginn Jr. playing a big role, the Browns are unlikely to use fellow rookie Brady Quinn.

In Miami's 22-19 loss at Houston on Sunday, Ginn caught a 36-yard pass and returned five kickoffs for 176 yards.

Quinn is still waiting to get in an NFL game.

Ginn found himself in the middle of the biggest story of this year's draft when, with everyone expecting Miami to pick Quinn at No. 9 overall, the Dolphins picked the Ohio State speedster, Ginn.

Vrabel went for knees, some say
Tuesday, October 9, 2007
By STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA Stark County football types remember Mike Vrabel as an edgy player at Walsh Jesuit High School. He was an edgy player at Ohio State.

"The players feared the wrath of Vrabel and that 1996 senior class,'' ESPN analyst and former Buckeye Kirk Herbstreit wrote in an ESPN.com piece. "They would let the players know verbally and punish them if they didn't do things the right way.''

Vrabel may have gone over the edge Sunday in Foxborough.

Browns players became livid in the final seconds of a 34-17 loss when Vrabel took out two Browns on one play after the whistle had apparently blown.

Steinbach angered by Vrabel
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
10/09/2007

BEREA -- The Patriots media guide in its ''extra points'' portion on the bio of Mike Vrabel describes how he unselfishly gives his time to a literacy program in Central Ohio and announces he and his wife donated $75,000 to Ohio State to help renovate the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Browns left guard Eric Steinbach has his own description of the New England linebacker.

''Classless, and you can quote me on that,'' Steinbach said in the Browns locker room yesterday afternoon.

Steinbach is still steamed about what Vrabel did with 11 seconds left Sunday in the 34-17 loss the Browns suffered in Foxborough
