Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Browns' offense making its point

The Browns sent shock waves through the NFL yesterday.

They carved up the vaunted Baltimore Ravens' defense in their 27-13 victory at Cleveland Browns Stadium. They made All-Pro linebacker Ray Lewis look ordinary.

The Browns are 2-2 after four games, far exceeding most fans' outlook. Imagine if they had a defense?

Injured Winslow soldiers on

CLEVELAND -- Anyone who has seen Kellen Winslow play knows what a gifted receiver he is. What makes him special to the Browns, aside from his acrobatic catches, is the way he prepares for a game every Sunday.

A shoulder injury kept Winslow out of practice until Friday last week, the lightest day of practice. But Winslow was determined to play against the Ravens.

McGinest returns, so does defense
By DAVID S. GLASIER, Journal Register News Service
10/01/2007

CLEVELAND -- Maybe it was an accident that Willie McGinest was back in action yesterday and the Browns' previously beleaguered defense finally looked respectable in the 27-13 home victory over Baltimore.

It probably wasn't.

Judging from comments made by his coach and teammates, the 14-year veteran linebacker's return from offseason back surgery had a lot to do with the defense's reversal of form after yielding 105 points in the first three games.

Jamal gets best of Ray in battle of Lewises
BOB FINNAN, Morning Journal Writer
10/01/2007

CLEVELAND -- Former Browns coach Marty Schottenheimer used to call it mano y mano.

It was a matchup made in heaven: Browns running back Jamal Lewis vs. Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis.

''It was a warrior going against a warrior,'' Ray Lewis said. ''(No.) 31 knew it was going to be a long day. You talk about classic battles. There's a warrior in Jamal.''

Browns starting to develop 'playmakers'

By JOSH McWILLIAMS
Special to The Daily Record
CLEVELAND -- Playmakers.
It wasn't so long ago that Cleveland had virtually none of those.
One look around the locker room now and one can see that has changed.
No longer do names like Quincy Morgan, Aaron Shea or Terry Kirby reside in the den of the Browns.
With weapons like Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow, Jamal Lewis and even a return magician in Joshua Cribbs lighting up the room, Cleveland has come a long way.
Entering Sunday's game with the Ravens, the dynamic duo of Edwards and Winslow were ranked 10th and second at their positions in the NFL in receiving yards.
Edwards had hauled in 278 yards and Winslow entered play with 271, which was second among tight ends.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CLEVELAND -- Willie McGinest, who missed the first three games while recovering from back surgery, returned yesterday to start at outside linebacker. "Any time you're away just watching, it's one of the hardest things in the world," McGinest said. "Just being out there with my teammates helping out and contributing, that's what I'm about. It's football, that's what I do, and it's a great feeling being out there."

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Braylon Edwards couldn't contain his excitement. This was a Sunday to let loose.

As energized Browns fans broke into Ohio State's signature "O-H-I-O" sing-a-long, raising their arms overhead to form each letter in the fourth quarter, Edwards, a Michigan man through and through, joined in.

"I was definitely doing it," Edwards admitted. "This is Ohio. This is my residence. This is where I play football. This is where I earn my paycheck. This is the city I've adopted and the one that has adopted me. I don't mind doing O-H-I-O. I don't believe it just pertains to Ohio State.

Who could've imagined a few years ago an image of Braylon Edwards doing "O-H-I-O" in a Browns uniform. There must be some pretty pissed off Michigan alum right now... :slappy:

The Browns are in second place! One game back of the Steelers!

For those keeping track at home, if the season ended today, the 1st round draft pick the Browns traded away to select Brady Quinn would be #12 at highest. If that's where it ends up at the end of the season, I'll be happy with the value the Browns got in that trade.

Cleveland scores with game plan

Chudzinski seems to know how to put his players in the right places at the right time... finally.

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

BEREA ? Maybe offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski really is a genius, as tight end Kellen Winslow insists whenever his name arises.
It's a plausible explanation for why the Cleveland Browns are gaining large chunks of yardage and scoring more points than at any time since returning to the NFL in 1999.

Browns say win not a big upset Team showing confidence with Patriots game next
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Tuesday, Oct 02, 2007

BEREA: The Browns' 27-13 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday seemed to some to be a stunning upset.
Center Hank Fraley, however, does not believe the Browns have anything in common with Appalachian State, Buster Douglas or the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team.

Tucker gets back on field Four-game suspension for steroids completed
Published on Tuesday, Oct 02, 2007
BEREA: Right tackle Ryan Tucker rejoined the Browns on Monday after serving a four-game suspension for violating the league's steroids policy.
The 11-year veteran will be allowed to practice during a week-long acclimation period. Cleveland has until Monday to activate him.
''It was hard. You take your medicine and go on with it,'' said Tucker, who is in his sixth season with the Browns.

Crennel shows Ravens defensive tactic
Tuesday, October 2, 2007
By STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA Dire straits call for strange schemes.

Faced with the prospect of falling to 1-3 with a sagging defense, the Browns fired up a blast from an unusual past.

In Sunday's 27-13 win over the Ravens, Head Coach Romeo Crennel took a page from a "UFO defense'' unleashed on Bill Belichick's 2000 New England Patriots. Crennel was in his only year as Browns defensive coordinator.
