Shoulder keeps Winslow out of practice
BOB FINNAN, Morning Journal Writer
09/27/2007

BEREA -- Browns tight end Kellen Winslow's shoulder condition might be cause for concern heading into their game against AFC North rival Baltimore on Sunday.

''He has a mild sublexation,'' Browns coach Romeo Crennel said. ''He came down on it (in Oakland) and it moved just a little bit. We have to get that soreness out of there.''

Browns: Friendships set aside as Lewis faces Ravens

Associated Press
Browns running back Jamal Lewis, leaping over Michael Myers, left, and Justin Smith of the Bengals, is excited about playing against his former team, the Baltimore Ravens.

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis had a luxury the first seven years of his career: He never had to play against the Baltimore Ravens defense.
That is no longer the case: Lewis faces his former teammates for the first time Sunday in an AFC North game.
Lewis ranks third in the NFL in rushing at 307 yards this season, and the Ravens lead the league against the run at 61.7 yards per game, so something has to give.

Browns: Secondary gets taken to school
Unit has allowed NFL-high 11 TDs

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- Eric Wright went to the Cleveland Browns' sideline Sunday in Oakland fuming at himself.
On a play-action pass on third-and-1, the rookie cornerback, caught watching the backfield, gave up a 41-yard touchdown to Raiders receiver Ronald Curry.
On the bench, Wright took off his helmet, grabbed a cup of Gatorade and slammed the drink down without taking a sip.

BROWNS INSIDER
Brady Quinn is keeping ready for his NFL debut with Cleveland Browns

Friday, September 28, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
What's Quinn up to these days?
Lots of film study, more time in the weight room and extra work after practice.
Quinn gets only a few reps a day with the Browns' No. 1 offense and about half the reps with the scout team. He said he tries to keep mentally sharp by emulating plays on a patch of field behind the offensive unit.
"When the plays are going on, you try to find a spot where I can just do my little walk-through while it's going on, like an abbreviated version of the drop, the handoff, going through my progressions," he said. "That helped me a lot back when I was kind of in this position at Notre Dame."

If Browns can't line up on defense, can they wake up? asks Terry Pluto

Friday, September 28, 2007

When the Browns lost to Oakland last Sunday, it was far more a case of under-preparation rather than under-estimation.
It was Braylon Edwards who offered the "under-estimate" diagnosis. He added, "We came out flat."
And yes, Romeo Crennel mentioned a lack of energy on the blocked field goal at the end of the game. The coach later said, "You can't just roll your hat out there and expect to win just because you think you're good. You have to prove it every Sun- day."

Quinn remains on hold
Friday, September 28, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk

BEREA The pressure of the NFL can ruin you if you let it. Derek Anderson was OK with it Thursday.

You knew that by the jocular way he warmed up for an indoor practice with fellow Browns quarterback Brady Quinn as rain fell outdoors.

Before the serious stuff started, Anderson walked to the opening - big as a barn door - at the south edge of the building.

He let the drizzle hit his face, took a gulp of the late September air and raised his long arms to the dark sky.

Playing to a small crowd, he proclaimed, "I feel winter."

For Roye, the battle never ends

BEREA -- Flecks of gray in Orpheus Roye's beard make him look distinguished. Creaky knees, both wrapped in elastic bandages, make him older than his 34 years.

On Sunday afternoon against the Ravens, Roye will start his 100th game with the Browns -- if his latest knee injury stops screaming long enough for him to play.
That is a bigger deal than it might seem.

The most recent Browns player to hit the century mark in starts was Bernie Kosar, who last played in 1993. The last defensive lineman to hit 100 was Jerry Sherk, who last played for the Browns in 1981.

Wilson waiting for his chance
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer

BEREA -- Travis Wilson might finally be getting his chance to prove he belongs on the field in a game that means something.

The Browns second-year receiver, banished to the practice squad for each of the first three games, will be the third receiver Sunday against the Ravens if Tim Carter cannot play. Carter missed practice Wednesday and yesterday with a knee injury. He also missed time in preseason with a hamstring injury and additional time with a thumb injury. He healed slowly both times.
''In this business, all it takes is a little chance,'' said Wilson, who caught only two passes last year. ''When I get my opportunities and make plays, everything else will be forgotten about.''

Browns have a special return team
Kickoff returner Cribbs ranked 4th in NFL, members share credit
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Friday, Sep 28, 2007

BEREA: Jason Wright insisted that he doesn't keep Joshua Cribbs calm on kickoff returns.
''No, no, no,'' Wright protested. ''He's calm. It's not like he's overanxious or trying to do too much.''
Wright did grudgingly admit to being Cribbs' voice of reason.
After Cribbs returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown last Sunday at Oakland, he praised Wright as the player who protects him at the point of attack. Wright, a running back who was a two-time Academic All-American at Northwestern University with a double major in psychology and pre-med, helps with decision-making, but former Kent State quarterback Cribbs provides the talent.

Winslow able to practice, hopes to play vs. Ravens

Saturday, September 29, 2007 3:35 AM
By James Walker

The Columbus Dispatch

BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns received good news yesterday when tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. practiced for the first time this week.

Winslow, the team's leading receiver, suffered a partially separated left shoulder Sunday in the 26-24 loss to Oakland. He is listed as questionable for Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens and might be a game-time decision. But players who participate in practice Friday usually are in uniform Sunday.

Browns bruised as defense fails to stop the run
Big plays must end, coordinator says

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- Stopping the run in the NFL requires attitude and aptitude.

So far, the Cleveland Browns haven't demonstrated either quality.
The Browns will look to improve their 31st-ranked run defense today when they play host to the Baltimore Ravens in an AFC North game. Cleveland is giving up 176.3 rushing yards per game; today, it faces one of the league's top running backs in Willis McGahee.

Ravens eager to face Lewis, struggling Browns defense

By Sean McClelland
the Dayton Daily News

Sunday, September 30, 2007

What you need to know about today's Browns-Ravens game at Cleveland Browns Stadium:

It's new Browns and old Browns again, not that the players care anymore. They do care that it's an AFC North showdown and that Browns running back Jamal Lewis is playing against his former team for the first time. If you like physical football, this is your game. But can the Browns hold up? The Ravens have won four of the last five meetings.

Browns game

While I'm always pleased with a Brown's victory especially over the Ratbirds, I still wish they would play Brady at QB. I do not think Anderson made any throws today that BQ could not have made and might have completed some passes that Anderson missed. Maybe Anderson made some reads and checkoffs that Brady might have missed but I don't think that he has much touch when he throws the ball. While I don't want the Browns to lose or for Anderson to get hurt may be a simple ankle sprain to Anderson would get Brady in there and we could see how he does perform.

We probably are also concerned about the defensive line performance but I think overall they played a little better today than they have all season.

Maybe keeping them a little fresher helped. Holly is certainly a concern when they go to him on nickel situations. If he is the best 5th DB that we have, that certainly needs to be addressed by next season unless Baxter has a miraculous recovery.
