Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Cribbs is one of the best personnel decisions that this team has made since it has been back in the league. They kid is just electric. He's one of those guys that whenever he touches the ball, it could be 6.

Where's the guy that was hoping Cribbs would get cut after Barclay returned one kick for a TD in the preseason? How stupid does he look now. Cribbs is one of the few players on the Browns roster that could play for any team.

I thought Romeo was brought to Cleveland because of his defensive expertise when he was with the Patriots. My question is when is he going to put this knowledge to use in Cleveland. Maybe the true mastermind in New England on both sides of the ball was [strike]Belichick.[/strike]the camera.

Fixed. :wink2:

Russell sucked...we picked him up after he was a backup in Minnesota...basically, we inserted a back-up safety at minnesota (who at that time didn't have a good secondary) into our secondary

Anyone who makes that ridiculous claim, including Doug "Decon?" Jones who said that same thing on the radio is on crack

this defense needs a pass rush, and players who are fast enough to cover receivers when the pass rush doesn't get pressure

I agree this secondary is weak, but it would have taken more than Brian Russell and his horrible cover skills to make a difference

We're stacked with hitters in the secondary, not cover corners or cover safeties....Brian Russell would not have helped that

I am not sure what you are saying in the second sentence. Russell was not by any means a superstar with the Browns, but when his own ex-teammates say he was the QB of the defense that means something. Like it or not, his presence is currently missed.

I probably overstated myself last night.....but Brian Russell taking reps away from our younger guys, w/o bringing anything other than leadership is not beneficial to this team

I don't care if the guy is the best leader in the world, he couldn't cover and was a liability on D

What we need is a healthy Gary Baxter which prob won't happen, so we'll have to address the secondary in the off-season through free-agaency

I t will be interesting to see who becomes available in the off-season

guess what, brodney pool cant cover and is a liability on D. At least russell knew where to go and where other guys needed to be.

BEREA: Browns coach Romeo Crennel warned his players not to get big heads.
Co-captains Joe Jurevicius and Hank Fraley also cautioned that beating the Cincinnati Bengals 51-45 the week before didn't mean they were headed for the Super Bowl.

Giving this 'D' a big 'F' Browns can't find answers

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND You give up 34 points in the opener, you're working out the bugs.

You get smoked for 45 by the Bengals in Game 2, it's a Carson Palmer thing - and so what? You won.

You give up 396 yards and lose, 26-24, to the Raiders, you're out of excuses. You accept that your defense is wrecking your season.

Two friends will get their kicks on Sunday
Tuesday, September 25, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Matt Stover and Phil Dawson, the best leg men ever to come out of Dallas Lake Highlands High School, meet in the middle again.

Stover was on one side of the gulf between the old Browns and the expansion reincarnation. He was Bill Belichick's only place-kicker in Cleveland, from 1991-95.

Dawson is on the other side, aside from injury downtimes, serving as Cleveland's only place-kicker since 1999.

Defense remains concern
By David S. Glasier, Journal Register News Service
09/25/2007

BEREA -- The words ''disappointing'' and ''frustrating'' kept tumbling from Romeo Crennel's mouth yesterday as he hashed over details of Sunday's 26-24 road loss to the Oakland Raiders.

''Even if we had won the game, I would have been disappointed at the way we played,'' Crennel said.

A defensive coach by trade, Crennel didn't much like the way his team defended the run or pass against the Raiders.

Browns notebook: Crennel finds flat effort frustrating

Tuesday, September 25, 2007 3:28 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns, hoping to build off a 51-45 win over Cincinnati a week earlier, were their own worst enemy Sunday in a 26-24 loss to the Raiders in Oakland.
They came out lifeless, and their early mistakes -- Cleveland was called for three penalties on its first drive -- allowed Oakland to open a 16-0 deficit.
"Whatever the reasons were, we came out flat," said receiver Braylon Edwards, who had four catches for 83 yards and a touchdown. "Obviously it affected us in the first half, and by the time we woke up it was too late."

but at least hes 25 and getting reps rather than being in the back-half of his career not getting any better

This really helping us now! We need some type of help now! You always have to have a few veterans in the starting lineup to show the young guys where they should be lining up. Pool is terrible on pass defense. Let him play special teams.

Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel looks to make changes to defense

Tuesday, September 25, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns coach Romeo Crennel indicated Monday he will examine ways to shake his woeful defense out of its slumber heading into Sunday's visit from the Ravens.
Of course, it would help if he could get "Good" Derek Anderson to show up this week, so opponents aren't starting drives inside the Browns' red zone after interceptions.
Crennel can't count on that, so he will have to get tough on his defense, which has plummeted to the depths of the NFL following last Sunday's 26-24 loss in Oakland.
