Lewis has something to prove to Ravens

By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA It can?t be said that no Brown was more hurt by the punch line to Sunday?s road trip than Jamal Lewis.

After the sudden 26-24 loss to the Raiders, the 28-year-old Georgian?s face reflected the shallow hurt of a man who cares, but is too new to be family.

The Browns hope Jamal Lewis can ravage the Ravens the way he ruined them on his best days ? and that the Ravens won?t contain him the way Cleveland did in some recent games.

Lewis has place in team history ? as opponent
Wednesday, September 26, 2007
Steve Doerschuk

Jamal Lewis is indelibly etched in Browns history. He is the all-time rushing leader of the team, Baltimore, that used to be the Browns. He leads Priest Holmes 7,801 yards to 2,102.

He was endorsed as a No. 5 pick in the 2000 draft by Phil Savage, who became the Browns? general manager and brought him to Cleveland.

I saw last night where the browns had four penalties on a punt play during the last game. That has to be a world record not only in the number but in team ineptness.
The burning question in my mind is ... WTH was wrong with the ref's who didn't throw a flag.

Cleveland Browns' Jamal Lewis reviving his career in Cleveland

and

Browns General Manager Phil Savage attended a workout at the University of Tennes see in 1999 when he was with the Ra vens and was struck by the sight of a player working out in a sandpit.
"I was like, My gosh, he looks like Jim Brown,' " recalled Savage of his first Jamal Lewis encounter. "He was so big and powerful, he looked like a beast."
During their bye week that season, Savage and Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome scouted the Alabama-Tennessee game, primarily to watch Crimson Tide running back Shaun Alexander.
"I said, Ozzie, I know you're here to see Shaun, but you really ought to get a load of this Jamal Lewis,' " said Savage. Newsome, the former Browns Hall of Fame tight end who will bring his Ravens to town Sunday, loved what he saw.
"Jamal ripped off a 43-yard run in the fourth quarter," said Newsome, an Alabama alum. "He showed that he had stamina to go along with his explosiveness."

It was week 1 vs. the Stillers. Unfortunately I was there. They had 4 penalties called, yet all were declined because the punt went about 18 yards. Yep. Go Browns!

Browns have gaps to plug No remedy to be found in a bottle
Published on Thursday, Sep 27, 2007

BEREA: The Browns have returned to the days of ''gap integrity.''
That term was introduced to the populace in 1999 by Chris Palmer, coach of the expansion Browns.
''Gap integrity'' or lack thereof was the cause of the Browns' poor run defense in 1999, and apparently it is the cause of the defensive problems today. ''It's gap integrity,'' Orpheus Roye said.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) ? Jamal Lewis did it all for Baltimore, and then got shown the door.
During six superb seasons, he won a Super Bowl ring, NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors, rushed for more than 7,000 yards and scored 45 touchdowns as a workhorse running back for the Ravens.
They, in turn, ran him out of town.

BEREA The Browns will find out Sunday whether Ray Lewis still plays fast.

Media covering the Browns have no doubt. The dude talks faster than an F-14 splits clouds.

In a rambling conference call related to Sunday?s Baltimore-Cleveland game, the 32-year-old Ravens? linebacker said:

Browns sticking with Wright guy at corner
BOB FINNAN, Morning Journal Writer
09/27/2007

BEREA -- Wholesale changes aren't forthcoming with the Browns' struggling defensive unit.

That's good news to rookie cornerback Eric Wright, who appears to be clinging to his starting job by his fingertips -- for another week at least. Some speculated that Wright would be replaced after allowing four touchdown passes in the first three weeks of the season.
