Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Anderson tosses two TDs as surprising Browns handle Ravens

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Braylon Edwards couldn't contain his excitement. This was a Sunday to let loose.

As energized Browns fans broke into Ohio State's signature "O-H-I-O" sing-a-long, raising their arms overhead to form each letter in the fourth quarter, Edwards, a Michigan man through and through, joined in.

"I was definitely doing it," Edwards admitted. "This is Ohio. This is my residence. This is where I play football. This is where I earn my paycheck. This is the city I've adopted and the one that has adopted me. I don't mind doing O-H-I-O. I don't believe it just pertains to Ohio State.

"Cleveland," he said, "is in Ohio."

And perhaps, again home to a respectable NFL team.

Picked on for years, the Browns finally gave a black eye to one of the league's biggest bullies.

Derek Anderson threw two touchdown passes, Jamal Lewis ran for one against his former team and the Browns, considered the weaklings of the rugged AFC North, surprised the Baltimore Ravens 27-13.

Quick start leads to surprisingly easy win

Browns come out of the gate firing, scoring on first possession, cruise to second straight AFC North victory.

CLEVELAND ? Somewhat tongue-in-cheek, the host of a local radio show has dubbed this "The Season of Dreams."
Maybe he's getting carried away, but raise your hand if you thought the Cleveland Browns would be 2-2 as October dawned. Or 2-1 against the AFC North Division.

Tom Archdeacon: Jamal gets the best of Ravens

By Tom Archdeacon
Staff Writer

Monday, October 01, 2007

CLEVELAND ? From the very first play from scrimmage, Ray Lewis was playing that role of the rabid intimidator as only he can.
The Baltimore Ravens' linebacker ? the icon of NFL destruction ? was posturing, pacing, glaring, yelling. Always yelling.

Seeing red
Ravens coach Brian Billick wanted to challenge Jamal Lewis' 1-yard touchdown run that gave the Browns a 24-3 second-quarter lead, but threw the red flag after the snap on Phil Dawson's extra point. It was the first rushing touchdown allowed by the Ravens since Nov. 12 at Tennessee, a streak of 10 games that was the NFL's longest.
''I think it was a touchdown,'' Lewis said. ''I hoped I put the ball over the line. That's what I was trying to do.''
Asked about that challenge, Billick said, ''There were a number of things. (The refs) told me it was second down when it was third down. They told me it was third down when it was second down. The officiating matched our play.''

SWEET RAVEN REVENGE Glory for Browns as Lewis, Anderson whip former team

CLEVELAND: Even if it had been 20 years ago and Bernie Kosar was drawing plays in the dirt for the Browns, he couldn't have scratched out a faster start.

Browns beginning to have the look of successful team Browns need improved defense against the run
Published on Monday, Oct 01, 2007

CLEVELAND: Is it time to change the expectations?
Does the Browns' 27-13 win over the Baltimore Ravens a win as impressive as last week's loss was bad mean it's time to change the evaluations of the team as well?
Or was Sunday's game another example of the middling mess that is the NFL? Put a bunch of teams in a hat, shake them up and who knows who comes out.
Some of the numbers of Sunday's game defy logical explanation because the Ravens dominated the statistics.

Despite painful injury, Winslow shoulders load Tight end delivers big plays to earn respect in victory over Ravens
By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Monday, Oct 01, 2007
CLEVELAND: Critics skewered Kellen Winslow when he likened playing football to war while playing at the University of Miami.
But those in the Browns' locker room compared him to a soldier after Winslow took the field Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens with a slightly separated shoulder and delivered a memorable performance.

Shaw: Right plays, right time

Posted by Bud Shaw October 01, 2007 00:16AM

Categories: Browns

Rob Chudzinski's offense is unpredictable without being gimmicky. It's a punch in the mouth with a hard right when a defense is looking left.
The element of surprise is there, but it's calculated surprise.
Where once Lawrence Vickers delivered shock, awe and an incompletion on a halfback pass in Maurice Carthon's offense, now the wackiest it gets with Chudzinski calling plays is Josh Cribbs in the shotgun.
"The options are unlimited," Cribbs said Sunday after the Browns' 27-13 whipping of a good Baltimore team, or at least a good Baltimore defense.

Anderson proves he's a starting QB

Monday, October 01, 2007

Suppose Brady Quinn had been playing like Derek Anderson this season. That he would have taken over for a battered Charlie Frye in the opener, then won two of three starts this season? And that he'd have nine TD passes compared to five interceptions. Or that he would have been sacked only twice. How strongly would you feel about Quinn?
Only it's Derek Anderson who is doing it, a sixth-round pick by Baltimore in 2005, the 213th player selected. He was claimed on waivers by the Browns. He had some real ups and downs, especially in training camp. But now, he has an 88.4 quarterback rating and the Browns are a very pleasant surprise at 2-2, the victories over Cincinnati and Baltimore. The Browns have scored at least 24 points in their last three games with Anderson, they did that only three times last season.

Getting even
Monday, October 1, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk

CLEVELAND Brian Billick ran for cover after Sunday's 27-13 loss to the Browns.

Getting spanked by a team that was 0-6 in the AFC North last year looks awful for a self-appointed Super Bowl contender whose window is closing at warp speed.

Staggering against an outfit that was 5-14 during the last 13 months, when yours came in at 15-4, must be flustering.

Anderson: Guys have confidence QB again gets great protection
Monday, October 1, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Almost as much as quarterback Derek Anderson, the guy who washes the Browns uniforms must like this offensive line.

Anderson's uniform isn't getting dirty.

"I hardly had any marks on me," Anderson said. "(The offensive line is) playing great. They're playing awesome. I told them today that's a heckuva job. That's the second game I haven't been touched. I got hit a couple of times, but that was from guys bouncing around."

Defense makes plays when necessary
Monday, October 1, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
repository sports writer

CLEVELAND The stats say there's no reason to quit sending out that S.O.S. on the Browns defense.

Much of the Browns' 27-13 win over Baltimore replies, "Shut the heck up."

At least, several Browns were saying so.

"Our defense played a heckuva game," said center Hank Fraley, who helped the offense to a no-sack Sunday.

"Defense had our backs today," tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. said.

BROWNS NOTEBOOK
Monday, October 1, 2007

On the attack

One way to quantify the difference between Mo Carthon's offense last year and Rob Chudzinski's this season:

? After four games in 2006, the Browns had been outscored, 50-27, in first halves.

? In Games 2, 3 and 4 in 2007, Cleveland has outscored opponents, 61-40.

Playing through pain Winslow continues to make plays
Monday, October 1, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
repository sports writer

CLEVELAND You wonder if Kellen Winslow goes home, lowers his body into a hot tub and goes, "Aaaaaggggghhhhh!"

You can't be sure, because he's good at hiding his pain after games. He was all about calm and cool after Sunday's 27-13 win over the Ravens.

He spent the afternoon trying to shield his slightly separated left shoulder from a defense with a rip-it-off-the-hinges bent.
