Browns sign punter Player

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

The Browns may have to shut down punter Dave Zastudil a week or two to get him healthy.
With that in mind, the club on Tuesday signed Scott Player, a more reliable backup punter than Paul Ernster, who was waived.
Replacing Zastudil in Game 1, Ernster dropped his first snap, which resulted in Pittsburgh's first touchdown. Zastudil returned for Game 2 and punted only two times, but he clutched his left back after the second punt.

By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Thursday, Sep 20, 2007
BEREA: Sean Jones is the only healthy safety on Cleveland's roster going into Sunday's game at Oakland, and the Browns might have to sign a player off their emergency list.
Coach Romeo Crennel said that was a possibility ''depending on how some injuries turn out.''

For Browns' defense, the rush is still on
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
09/20/2007

BEREA -- Run defense will not getting any easier for the Browns just because they play a team that has not won this season.

Lamont Jordan, the Raiders' primary running back, is fourth in the league with 229 yards rushing after two games. He is two notches below the Browns' Jamal Lewis (251 yards) and one below the Steelers Willie Parker. Parker gained 109 of his 235 yards against the Browns in the opener.

Rudi Johnson of the Bengals is eighth with 168 yards rushing, 123 of which were against the Browns.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns receiver Braylon Edwards beamed exuberantly in the locker room yesterday.

"I feel like I'm a part of the team," Edwards said. "I feel like I'm healthy, 100 percent. I don't have anything wrong with myself, and I feel like I'm maturing."
Coming off a career-high 146 receiving yards and two touchdowns, Edwards thinks he's turning the corner in his third season. His performance Sunday in helping lead the Browns to a 51-45 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals was a step in the right direction.

Braylon Edwards called his shot in May.

BROWNS INSIDER
Newly signed punter gives Browns long-term answer

Thursday, September 20, 2007

If Romeo Crennel has to rest Dave Zastudil for a while, he now has a punter he likes in Scott Player.
"Player gives me a more long-term answer, whereas before I was looking for a short-term answer," said Crennel, who waived Paul Ernster and signed Player on Tuesday.
Crennel said he's not sure where Zastudil (strained oblique) stands.

I just don't understand Romeo's remarks. I thought if it were just for one game that you would want to have the best punter available and he did not do that. Very strange.

actually, it has to do with vested veteran status. Player, the new punter, has vested veteran status, and Ernster does not. Vested veterans that are on the opening day roster get paid a full season's salary, versus the one game salary Ernster got. So, it would have been stupid to pick up Player for the opener and have to pay him for a whole season when he will punt maybe for 3 games.

Thanks for explaining Romeo's rationale. It now makes sense.
