Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Thanks for explaining Romeo's rationale. It now makes sense.

Every once in awhile, we hear about these little clauses and rules that previously, at least I, didn't know about. They are sometimes even weird enough to make Romeo's decisions look sensible. Just don't count on them happening more than once a year or so.

Wright on his play so far: 'Pretty solid'

BEREA "The Black Hole" was just across the bay. It might as well have been across the Milky Way.

Eric Wright was a San Francisco boy who had no use for the Raiders.

He turned 10 when Al Davis' team moved back to Oakland, months after the 49ers trampled San Diego 49-26 in Super Bowl XXIX.

He's got grit, but what else? QB McCown's days may be numbered as Oakland starter

BEREA Talented? He's no Carson Palmer.

Tough. Yes. Grit has kept Josh McCown in the NFL since he was a rookie Round 3 pick out of Sam Houston State in 2002.

McCown, 28, will make his 24th NFL start Sunday, against the Browns. It will be his third and perhaps his last start for Oakland, which has Daunte Culpepper warming up in the bullpen and rookie No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell penciled in for action as fast as you can say Brady Quinn.

By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA With Brodney Pool woozy, Gary Baxter iffy and enemy quarterbacks throwing touchdown passes in droves, the Browns need help at safety.

Mike Adams vows to bring "a lot of energy'' to the Browns' attempt to close the floodgates in Game 3.

"This is not my first cookout,'' the 26-year-old New Jersey native said today before practice. "This is my fourth year in the league, and I've played a lot.

"I know what I've got to do.''

BEREA Oakland's 2006 locker room was a psycho ward.

"That's no secret," new Raiders Head Coach Lane Kiffin said Wednesday. "It was extremely dysfunctional."

So they shipped out Randy Moss, and they brought in ... Gerard Warren?

Defense may no longer be secondary
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
09/21/2007

BEREA -- Josh McCown, quarterback of the Oakland Raiders, might just be the miracle cure the Browns' ailing pass defense needs to get out of its sickbed.

The Browns yielded 10 passing touchdowns in the first two games while having the misfortune of facing Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers and Carson Palmer of the Bengals. Excluding Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, whom they must contend with on Oct. 7, Roethlisberger and Palmer are the best two quarterbacks on the Browns' schedule.

Turnovers sometimes are a problem for Browns quarterback Derek Anderson, but he threw just one interception while tossing five touchdown passes last week against the Bengals.

BEREA, Ohio -- The light came on for Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson last week against Cincinnati.
Now, will the light stay on?
That is a major question as the Browns (1-1) prepare for a game Sunday at the Oakland Raiders (0-2). Anderson is coming off a career-high five-touchdown, 328-yard performance in a 51-45 win over the Bengals.
"What you did last week, it's over with," coach Romeo Crennel said. "What are you going to do this week? That's the nature of the business that we're in."

Cleveland Browns safety Brodney Pool hopes to play against Oakland Raiders

Saturday, September 22, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Safety Brodney Pool now has another headache to go with his concussion: The NFL fined him $5,000 Friday for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Cincinnati Bengals receiver Glenn Holt and he plans to appeal it.
"I didn't try to lead with my head," said Pool, who's questionable for Sunday's game in Oak land, Calif., because of the concus sion. "It was a combination of the way he was coming down and the way I had to adjust my angle when the quarterback darted the ball in. I'm going to try to contest it."
Pool's helmet smashed into Holt's last Sunday after a 22-yard catch - but it was Pool who took the brunt of the collision. He wobbled off the field and later threw up on the sideline. Holt returned to the game and returned a pair of kickoffs for 25 and 28 yards.

Browns have shot at going back-to-back
Cleveland hasn't won two in row since 2003

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- It was the riddle no Browns player could solve this week.
When was the last time Cleveland won two games in a row?
"I can't remember," linebacker and team captain Andra Davis said.
Safety Sean Jones said, "Man, that's a hard question to answer."
Receiver Braylon Edwards was sure he'd accomplished it in a Browns uniform during his three-year career.
He was wrong.

Trusted friend advised Savage to land Anderson

Sunday, September 23, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Oakland, Calif.- Browns General Manager Phil Savage was scouting a Louisville-Oregon State game in 2005 when he received a tip from his good friend Mike Riley, head coach at Oregon State.
"He said the Ravens were going to waive Derek Anderson [his former Oregon State quarterback] and try to get him on their practice squad," recalled Savage. "He said, 'You really ought to take a shot on him. I don't think you'll regret it.' "
Savage had received helpful advice from Riley before, when he coached under him with the San Antonio Riders of the World League of American Football. Just six weeks after Riley hired him to coach tight ends and running backs in 1991, Savage got an offer from the Browns to become a quality control assistant under Bill Belichick.
