Cleveland Browns keep a humble attitude after win over Bengals

Players staying humble after Sunday's surprise
Tuesday, September 18, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Before everyone makes a Pro Bowler out of Derek Anderson, a Super Bowl team out of the Browns and a Hall of Famer out of Braylon Edwards, coach Romeo Crennel waved the caution flag on Monday.
"What's going to happen now is that a lot of these guys will be told they're the best thing since sliced bread -- they can run for 200 yards in a game and throw for 500 yards, get five touchdown passes and put 51 points on the board," Crennel said.

Tuesday, September 18, 2007
By STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA -- Shortly after Sunday's historic 51-45 win against the Bengals ended, the Browns were receiving calls from the national media. ESPN Radio wanted Derek Anderson. Peter King of Sports Illustrated wanted to talk to the Cleveland's latest savior. Kellen Winslow chatted on The Sporting News Radio.

'A' game for D.A.
Tuesday, September 18, 2007
By STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA Basking in the afterglow of a 51-45 win, Browns center Hank Fraley whipped out the report card.

"Pittsburgh, we brought our 'F' game,'' Fraley said. "Cincinnati, we brought our 'A' game."

And how about D.A.'s game?

Former high first-round picks Jamal Lewis, Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow Jr. gave the offense what it might hope from such talents (461 combined rushing-receiving yards).

Baxter may be ready
Tuesday, September 18, 2007
By STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA The Browns could get a needed boost from Gary Baxter at Oakland.

Lost in the euphoria of Sunday's shootout win over the Bengals was a second straight week of shaky defense.

Baxter thinks he can help a secondary that surrendered 401 passing yards and six touchdowns to Carson Palmer.

Shallow secondary could add depth with Pool
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
09/18/2007

BEREA -- Brodney Pool is hopeful he can play against the Raiders after suffering a mild concussion that knocked him out in the second quarter Sunday.

Pool was injured when he left his feet and slammed into Bengals receiver Glenn Holt head first at the Bengals 42. Pool was penalized for unnecessary roughness.

One week later, question remains the same
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
09/18/2007

BEREA --Who needs an expensive Ferrari that goes from zero to 60 in five seconds when you have a football team that goes from 7 to 51 in seven days?

One week after the prevailing question in the Browns locker room was ''How could it happen?'' following the 34-7 loss to the Steelers, the question was the same following the stunning 51-45 triumph over the Bengals. The answers were predictably different, though not as different as one might guess.

BROWNS INSIDER
Dave Zastudil punting in pain for Cleveland Browns

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Dave Zastudil still isn't out of the woods with his strained oblique and is still day to day.
After seeing the punter's left side Sunday after the game, it's easy to understand why he's in such pain. His side is badly bruised and red, as if it had been resurfaced by a road-grader.
"We've been beating it up pretty good to get it ready, massaging it and things," said Zastudil, who was in pain after the game. "It's pretty sore, right under the rib."

BEREA ? When Joshua Cribbs returns a kickoff, it's not just the fans who stand or move to the edge of their seats. Teammates make sure their sight lines are clear, too.
"I love watching Cribbs," center Hank Fraley said. "We get fired up. We all get up there on the sideline."

Same record, different tunes for Lewis, Crennel

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Wednesday, September 19, 2007
Seven days ago, the Browns were the worst team in the NFL and the Bengals were division favorites and Super Bowl contenders. Browns supporters were jumping off bridges and one Cincinnati radio host (Lance McAllister) was gleefully soliciting nicknames for the Bengals' stellar defense.
Quite a difference a week has made, don't you think?

Browns: Raiders QB doesn?t compare to what Browns have faced so far
Wednesday, September 19, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

The Browns faced a tough, surly defense and got embarrassed by Pittsburgh.

What a difference facing a Cincinnati sieve made.

Now, Cleveland?s defense needs a cure for Ben Roethlisberger and Carson Palmer. His name might be Josh McCown.

Browns bring in Player to punt
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
09/19/2007

BEREA -- Dave Zastudil's injured oblique muscle continues to nag him, so the Browns decided yesterday to sign a new backup punter and waive the one they signed Sept. 8.

The new addition is Scott Player, a nine-year veteran who appeared in 140 games with the Arizona Cardinals from 1998-2006. Paul Ernster was waived to clear a roster spot for Player.

Crennel knows Browns are walking a fine line
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
09/19/2007

BEREA -- When Sam Rutigliano coached the Browns he talked often about how a coach can lose credibility with his players if he ''swings from the chandelier'' after a big victory or ''crawls in under the carpet'' after a numbing loss.

It was Rutigliano's way of saying a coach has to stay on an even keel; otherwise his players won't play under control when the game is on the line.
