Michael Arace commentary: Beleaguered Browns, fans needed this surprise party

CLEVELAND -- From Lake Erie to the Ohio River, the anticipation built all week. Would the Cincinnati Bengals beat the Cleveland Browns by two, three or four touchdowns? How many snaps would Browns quarterback Derek Anderson get before he was traded for a sixth-round draft pick? At what minute of the first quarter would the denizens of the Dawg Pound begin chanting, "Brady, Brady, Brady?"

I admit that I have to eat crow about what I wrote regarding DA. Hopefully he'll keep it up.

Congratulations Browns!!!

I think we all do. Funny to think back now on how the crowd (and I'm sure everyone watching at home) were booing DA after the first posession and calling for Brady. I guess he proved he should start again in Week 3. Congrats to Derek, he definitely went out and proved everyone wrong.

Am I the only one who thought that our Defense was getting decent pressure on Palmer yesterday, but it seemed like our secondary was lost, again this week? We have good safeties and corners, WTF is going on back there??

I don't think we have good corners or safeties truthfully.....I think Leigh Bodden is a #2 corner (not a the shut-down stud some people make him out to be) and Eric Wright is forced into starting b/c of injuries to our veterans.....Wright wouldn't start anywhere else in this league w/ the exception of Cincinnati since they must see how bad Leon Hall is. Our safeties are also pretty poor.....Brodney Pool is athletic and a good hitter but poor in pass coverage, plus it doesn't help he got hurt on the helmet to helmet and Mike Adams had to step in

Sean Jones is decent, but again not a stud...he gets his share of pics but also is out of position half the time

I'd be willing to say we have a bottom 5 secondary in the league....they're still very young and getting better though

their were a few on the board who actually thought DA played well against Pitt under the circumstances and thought he deserved a real shot :)

first, cleveland got absolutely no pressure from the front 4. the few times peak or wimbley got the corner on the tackles, palmer had a huge pocket to step into because the DE's got no push. The few times they did were on stunts in which roye/smith were too slow to get to the qb.

as for the secondary, they may look bad, but they are young.

wright as a rookie has had the short straw in guarding ward and hoosyourmama in his first two pro starts. bodden is solid, but not lock-down. jones is in his 2nd full year as a starter, and pool is starting for the first time after being bounced between cb and safety last year due to injury.

if there is one unit that gets about 6-8 games before the jury comes back, it's the secondary. but the front 7 must get better overall, and that unit is pretty young as a whole as well.

Maybe it was because the only other cornerbacks and safeties on the field were Bengals, but I thought Eric Wright did an exceptional job on T.J. Obviously, Bodden struggled with Chad Johnson, but prick or not, Chad is that damn good.

The front "3" got no pressure all day. Occasionally, Antwan Peek or Kamerion Wimbley would breath on Palmer, but that's it. The Bengals offensive line did a great job of protection. Either that, or we just didn't disguise our blitz schemes very well.

We have a good safety in Sean Jones. Leigh Bodden's a good corner, but he played injured, and still made one hell of an interception. Eric Wright's a rookie who hasn't reached his potential. Brodney Pool, well, he hasn't done squat yet. Our secondary right now is less than average at best.

I am not going to jump on the Anderson bandwagon yet. Yesterday the offensive line gave him plenty of time to throw and a lot of the times his WRs were wide open. He also missed on a couple "easy" throws. He looked extremely good in a game last year but I want to see a little more of him before joining his club.

I really didn't think we were getting good enough pressure on Palmer yesterday. I would like to see Grantham take some chances on defense and do more blitzing from the inside backers or maybe a safety.

Our corners and safeties are extremely young and while I don't think Bodden is a "shutdown" corner how many teams in the league have a true corner that they can leave on a island without any safety help. I know that Pool is only in his second year but he does not impress me in pass coverage.

I didn't get to see the game. No way is that game going to get played out here in the PNW; therefore, I didn't get to hear anything. I did see on GameCast that he was 0-2 on the first possession and I just figured it would be a LONG day. I don't mind being wrong.

I'm not a believer either. Hell, we're talking about the Browns. One's optimism is more or less a past tense consideration each week after HOPING that a team would show up. IF DA can start to put things together on a regular basis and be consistent; then by all means, I'll become a believer; until then, just a wing and a prayer.
