Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

I am by no means on anyone's bandwagon on this team right now, that includes not only DA, but also Braylon and Jamal Lewis. Braylon had a great game, made some great catches and really played his balls off, and I give him a ton of credit for that. Especially when he smoked scUM Hall on that TD catch. But he could very easily slip back into being Brickhands Braylon at any time. Jamal looked really good, but I need to see more of this (not necessarily 200+ yards) to really feel like we have a really good dependable ball carrier this year.

Right now I think the only person this team that we can expect consistency week in and out right now is K2. He is just the real deal out there. I love his intensity.

I'm not a believer either. Hell, we're talking about the Browns. One's optimism is more or less a past tense consideration each week after HOPING that a team would show up. IF DA can start to put things together on a regular basis and be consistent; then by all means, I'll become a believer; until then, just a wing and a prayer.
Agree. One of my buddies bet on the Bengals this week as a "sure thing." I tried to tell him, never bet on or against the browns, you never know who is going to show up.

I think that thing that became clear yesterday is that it takes the entire offense to make the QB look good....if Anderson gets time he can be a quality QB.....If he has pressure in his face all day he's gonna suck, just like Peyton Manning did against Pittsburgh two years ago

Yesterday, the offense was clicking on all cylinders...good protection, good run game, and the receivers were making all the catches....thank god we got Cincy in week 2 to give us just a little confidence going into week 3

As Mike Ditka and Mike Golic were saying this morning....Anderson may not be great, but you know what you're getting. A QB who makes quick decesions and would rather throw too early and make a poor throw, than a guy who will sit in there and take a pounding.....that's exactly the type of QB this team needs right now b/c we'll get inconsistent play through the season, but if Anderson can continue to get rid of the ball quickly and limit turnovers, at least we can be competitive in games

I don't think we have good corners or safeties truthfully.....I think Leigh Bodden is a #2 corner (not a the shut-down stud some people make him out to be) and Eric Wright is forced into starting b/c of injuries to our veterans.....Wright wouldn't start anywhere else in this league w/ the exception of Cincinnati since they must see how bad Leon Hall is. Our safeties are also pretty poor.....Brodney Pool is athletic and a good hitter but poor in pass coverage, plus it doesn't help he got hurt on the helmet to helmet and Mike Adams had to step in

Sean Jones is decent, but again not a stud...he gets his share of pics but also is out of position half the time

I'd be willing to say we have a bottom 5 secondary in the league....they're still very young and getting better though

For some weird reason, the only thing I can associate this thought to, is a familiar scene from the movie Office Space. Again, it's a weird reason, and I can't point to it. Bare with me.

"Uh, yeah, um, we're gonna need a cover for your TPS report. Um, ummkay, so yeah, did you get the message?"

"Yup."

"Hey, uh, did you remember to put a cover on your TPS report? I'm not sure yet if you got the memo or not, but we need a cover now for your TPS report."

"Got it."

"Not sure if you, um, got the memo about thee, um, cover, for your TPS report...yeah, we're gonna need that cover...did you get the memo?"

"YES! I got the fucking memo! I only have 8 bosses stopping down here to tell me that I need a cover for my TPS report! I got the fucking memo!"

Yes, the Browns need help in the secondary. It's obvious. Yet there's not an NFL team that plays next weekend that couldn't use it. It's a total given. It relates somewhat to "Why does JT recruit so many corners and/or safeties? Don't we have enough already?" No. The answer is going to be no everytime.

I'm not sure I'm up for this challenge yet, but I'd guess that there are more than 5 teams that have a worse secondary situation than what is going on right now in Cleveland. And I would start in Cincinnati! :slappy:

First off, Office Space is my favorite movie, and Peter Gibbons is my hero.

But, Clevelands secondary isn't even mediocre...if you go position by position w/ other teams secondaries, you'd be surprised at just how bad our secondary is....Brodney pool and Sean Jones are backups on most teams rosters

Eric Wright is maybe a nickleback at this point in his career on most squads, and Leigh Bodden is a #2 cb on most teams....i'm not going to go through every NFL team to break it down, but take a look for yourself....it isn't a pretty picture,.....Gary Baxter has hurt the situation a lot, and I think the fact that Daylon McCutheon was our #1 corner a majority of the years we've been back speaks volumes

Thank God Leon Hall isn't on our team though

Yes, they probably are back-ups on most teams. But they are gaining experience each week, and not a one of those guys is considered a veteran. I can find a lot of reasons to get excited about both safeties.

Wright is 2 games into his career. A nickelback as a rookie would be a good start on most teams, which we certainly aren't most teams. But if he's on the field at all, it's better than bringing him along with film. Jones was hurt, Pool is coming along, and Bodden is sweet when healthy. I just stick to my guns that these guys are nothing to sneeze at. Only time can tell.

Leon Hall....yeah, bro, we are both all over this one!!!!!!

If you think the problem on Sunday was the secondary, you're sorely mistaken. It's the moribund defensive line that can't generate any pressure on the quarterback. I'm sorry, but Robaire Smith, Ted Washington and Orpheus Roye are not getting the job done. When Wimbley and/or Peek rushes, they get double-teamed because no one needs to worry about the three guys in front.

When you give a quarterback like Carson Palmer, w/ Chad Johnson at receiver, all the time in the world, he will make you pay. That's what happened on Sunday. Don't blame the secondary.

I think we're both in agreement then....I do think the potential is there, but right now this secondary is too young and way too exposed....Pittsburgh and Cincinnati both had field days all over this team in our back 4/5

Bad weather can't come soon enough for this team, b/c the strength of our D is in the front 7.....Wimbley continues to impress, Peak is still getting acclimated, and Andra Davis and D'Qwell Jaackson are both mainstays in this D

Truthfully, signing Mike Doss for this D would have been a fantastic move...it's disappointing they let that one go

I'm gpnna have to disagree....I understand your point, but even Big ben ate this secondary up

Our front 3 sucks, our LB's are good, and the back 4 is weak...let's not forget Bryan Russel and Daylon McCutheon started on this team recently....we still need to develop the new guys and get them experience......as good as Cincy is in the pass game, there were still lots of mistakes in coverage

They'll get better, but to think these guys won't get exposed all year is naive in my opinion

I agree with your assessment of the defensive units. However, I believe that without adequate pressure on the opposing QB, even average WRs will get open against a strong secondary unit. Offenses are just too sophisticated and the rules favor WRs too much for that to not be the case.

The D-line should be the first priority for improvement in the offseason. A better D-line should make the other two units better because the LBs are freed up to make more plays and increased pressure on the opposing QB means that the secondary doesn't have to hold out as long in coverage. Better players in the secondary would be nice, but at the moment it probably wouldn't do much to have an impact on the other units.

And Big Ben also had all the time in the world.

It's no coincidence that the Patriots consistently have a good passing defense despite the fact that they are constantly putting young guys out there - they get pressure from their blitz schemes and defensive line. A dominant defensive line will make any secondary look good and a shitty defensive line will make any secondary look weak.

Again I get your point....but this secondary is weak

I know Cincy prob has the best receiving core in the NFL outside of Indy.....but these guys just aren't very good...I guess it's difficult to keep arguing this point, but just wait and see

I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong if they play well, but it's just not going to happen.....they aren't good pass defenders...we have a bunch of physical, run stop first defenders for a secondary, outside of Eric Wright who shouldn't even be starting....and I agree Wright played pretty well for a rookie against Cincy...he reminded me of Donald Washington, keep eveything in front and be a sure tackler, which is exactly what he did to T.J. basically the entire game

Again, these guys will get better, but they're still a couple years away from ebing a consistently good group of DB's

Playmakers even surprise Browns

Superb blocking provides Anderson with time to throw the ball and Lewis plenty of room to run.

BEREA ? They had been scraping the bottom of nearly every power ranking after an embarrassing Week 1 loss to Pittsburgh that resulted in the trading of their starting quarterback.
A week later, nobody is picking the Cleveland Browns to win the Super Bowl, but it's as if a shroud of doom has been lifted.

By Sean McClelland

BEREA ? So ... uh ... what about the defense? Can anything be done?
The Browns have given up 10 touchdown passes and 79 points in their first two games. They beat the Bengals 51-45 on Sunday despite yielding six TD passes to Carson Palmer, 209 receiving yards to Chad Johnson and 118 yards on the ground to Rudi Johnson.
