Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Unless the Browns improve their defense against the run, it won't make much difference who the QB is this season. I am beginning to wonder about Grantham. Almost wish he would have been offered the MSU job. I thought Romeo's defensive coaching was his expertise but maybe it was Belichick who was really calling the shots in New England.

When you find a starting defense that would put davin holley, ralph brown and jereme perry as their starting cb's, let me know.

Cleveland's defensive numbers weren't all that poor when factored against total snaps played last season. the front 3 is really the only area left to address. the back 7 has the potential to be quite solid, should there not be a typical rash of injuries.

I've never said they were starters. I would be very surprised if Perry makes the final cut. He did not play that much against Denver as compared to the Lions game.

I totally agree that it is the D-line that needs to be upgraded and I don't think when Roye comes back that will improve anything. I would like to see the Browns mix it up a little similar to what they do in New England and Pittspuke and maybe only have 2 linemen and put Thompson in the inside or wherever. Washington is waaay passed his usefulness but we don't have anything better right now.
May be a surprise will show up on the waiver wire in two weeks.

you obviously didn't get it. you were stating that grantham should have taken the MSU job, based on the defenses performance. However, last year, Cleveland was starting the likes of Davin Holley, Ralph Brown, and Jereme Perry at cb. you find another team that has to dig that deep in the trash for starters, and see how they performed.

and this year's exhibition games. Isn't Romeo's expertise on the defensive side of the ball? Grantham better take some chances or QBs will be knitting in the pocket and runners will be setting records.

well, disregarding the fact that it is preseason, Cleveland is 12th in the league in yardage given up, and 7th in points defensively this preseason. so, you are still wrong.

I would just like to give a nod to the current crop of Linebackers in Cleveland. This group gets me so much more excited than any other group, besides maybe the OL, but I just have more faith in the LB's to be the anchor for the Browns for the next few years. Lots of talent behind that DL.

Browns notebook: Crennel gives QB question more life

Tuesday, August 28, 2007 3:25 AM
By James Walker

The Columbus Dispatch

BEREA -- Browns coach Romeo Crennel named Charlie Frye the starting quarterback yesterday, but only for Thursday's preseason finale against the Chicago Bears.

Most expect Frye to start the regular-season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers in two weeks. Crennel says he has an idea which quarterback will start the regular season but will wait to make a final decision.
"I just don't understand, what's the deal about the quarterback position?" Crennel said, smiling. "I know it's an important position, but I told you last week that Charlie's going to start and (Derek Anderson) came in. And I'm telling you this week that Charlie is going to start and D.A. is going to come in.

The Browns won't see the starting offensive line they once envisioned until the fifth game of the regular season at the earliest.
That's because:
Left guard Eric Steinbach, the $49.5 million, free-agent acquisition, has been ruled out from playing the preseason finale Thursday in Chicago

BROWNS INSIDER
Charlie Frye to start against Bears, but Cleveland Browns QB job still open

Tuesday, August 28, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Coach Romeo Crennel named Charlie Frye the starter for Thursday night's preseason finale in Chicago - but will keep the Pittsburgh Steelers guessing about who will start the regular-season opener on Sept. 9.
He said Frye will start in Chicago and Derek Anderson will come in next. Because the starters usually only play a series or two, Brady Quinn might get a fair amount of playing time.
"Next week before the Pittsburgh game, I'll tell you who the starter is going to be," Crennel said. "I'll tell you when I know. I have an idea, but I don't know yet. We're going week to week. If a guy gets hurt, the next guy goes go in. That's football."

The Associated Press
CLEVELAND (AP) ? The Browns cut nine players Monday, including undrafted rookie kicker Jesse Ainsworth who was unable to unseat veteran Phil Dawson.
Other cuts included defensive back Therrian Fontenot, defensive end Orien Harris, tight end Buck Ortega and wide receivers Mike Mason and Kendrick Mosley. Fontenot played one game for Cleveland last season and Harris appeared in two games.

Steinbach plansto face Steelers Bentley out first six games. Baxter's return in doubt
By Marla RidenourBeacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA: The Browns' star free agents of the past three years now represent varying degrees of hope.
All are injured. Only one is on track to start when the Browns open the regular season Sept. 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. But while the situation seems dire for two, they are not ready to give up on their football careers.
Guard Eric Steinbach, who signed a seven-year, $49.5 million contract in March, has been sidelined since Aug. 7 with a sprained right knee. But he said he would ''definitely'' play against the Steelers after sitting out Thursday's preseason finale at the Chicago Bears.
