Browns taking cautious approach with Quinn

The best news Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn received over the weekend was a bit of information he probably didn't like hearing. It came when Browns general manager Phil Savage told local media that Quinn, barring some minor miracle, will not be starting when the team opens its season against Pittsburgh on Sept. 9.

Until that point, Quinn had been hoping to beat out veterans Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson for the job. After it, he surely had a better sense of how much work he still has to do.

This isn't a bad thing, by the way. Though Quinn clearly wanted to win the spot after an 11-day contract holdout to start training camp, he's better off if he sits for a while. It's clear that the Browns think that layoff hurt his chances of making valuable strides during the preseason. It's also apparent that this management doesn't want to make the same mistakes that overwhelmed its last first-round pick at this position, Tim Couch.

Browns training camp: Browns wait for Wilson to step up
Wednesday, August 29, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA The brass wants more bang for the bucks paid to last year?s draft picks who rusted as rookies.

Lacking depth at wide receiver, 2006 third-round pick Travis Wilson has been a special project.

As camp opened, bushels of footballs sailed Wilson?s way.

As camp closed, Wilson was nothing special. Too many drops. Not enough energy.

Coordinator Rob Chudzinski got fed up recently when Wilson beat his man but didn?t go hard enough after a deep ball.

Browns already talk Steelers
Wednesday, August 29, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
repository sports writer

BEREA The schedule says it?s a game at Chicago.

Browns lineman Ryan Tucker says, ?We?re practicing for the Steelers.?

Tucker will play against the Bears, but miss the first four games on a steroid-related suspension.

That doesn?t change the fact he?s one of the Browns who gets the rivalry. His first season with Cleveland ended with a 36-33 playoff loss at Pittsburgh. It sticks in his craw that the Browns are 1-7 against the Pennsylvanians since then.

The Steelers play Thursday night at Carolina. Is Pittsburgh as zoned in on the Browns?

?They should be,? Tucker said. ?We?re watching them.?

Charlie Frye will start at quarterback at Chicago.

?We want to put back-to-back good performances together and use it as a carry-over into the Pittsburgh week,? he said, alluding to last weekend?s win at Denver.

The Cleveland Browns' Phil Dawson is missing kicks

Despite Dawson's success with Browns, some worry
Wednesday, August 29, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
What have you done for me lately?
Phil Dawson realizes the question applies to place-kickers as much as anyone in the NFL.
His two field-goal misses in three preseason games for the Browns have Internet chat rooms all atwitter.

Jurevicius eager for new start with Browns

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Thursday, August 30, 2007

A year ago, Joe Jurevicius was more or less just happy to be here. He was back home, poised to help resuscitate the team he had grown up rooting for in suburban Cleveland.
It didn't quite work out. The Browns went 4-12.

But now, with the novelty worn off and a realistic offense in place, Jurevicius thinks he can be more of a presence.
"Leadership is something I'm going to relish this year," he said.

QBs play on unsure ground Frye, Anderson to go in tonight, could be cut Saturday
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA: The secrecy and the evasiveness and the coin flips have to be wearing thin.
After practice Tuesday, when the Browns' top three quarterbacks were asked to briefly address the media, Derek Anderson wanted no part of it. He headed to the locker room, either content that Charlie Frye and Brady Quinn could handle the interviews, or figuring their sound bites were what everyone was seeking, anyway.

Cleveland Browns seek answers before final preseason test

Thursday, August 30, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Browns will use their preseason finale tonight in Chicago to answer questions heading into the final cuts on Saturday and the opener Sept. 9 against Pittsburgh.
Besides deciding on a starting quarterback, the team has issues at other positions, including third receiver, third cornerback, third tailback and punt returner. They must also address their still-porous run defense and hope some of their injured players return by the opener.

Browns' McGinest still true to Poly

Thursday, August 30, 2007 Bob Fortuna

Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns linebacker Willie McGinest is one of the many Long Beach Poly, Calif., graduates who went on to play for the University of Southern California, then moved on to the NFL.
"I had a good time at [Long Beach Poly]," said McGinest, 35, who began his NFL career with the New England Patriots. "We had some very good teams, but when our marching band came out to perform, it was really something to see."
McGinest was an all-state selection in football and basketball at Poly before graduating in 1990.

Browns to use Tucker at different spots
Thursday, August 30, 2007
STEVE DOERSCHUK

CHICAGO Imagine learning to the play the tuba after training on the violin.

?It?s something like that,? Ryan Tucker laughed.

Tucker has been the Browns? starting right tackle since 2002, but his four-game suspension for steroid use forced the Browns to move Kevin Shaffer to right tackle and groom Kelly Butler as the backup ? at least until Tucker returns.

Final preseason game means more to Browns
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
08/30/2007

CHICAGO -- Romeo Crennel does not always follow tradition in the preseason, so it is no surprise the Browns head coach is not taking a conventional approach tonight to the final practice game of the summer.

Normally starters in the final preseason game play a series or two, just enough to keep an edge, then they retire to the bench and start thinking about the first opponent for the regular season. For the Browns, that means the Steelers on Sept. 9 in Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Browns: As opener looms, run defense filled with holes

Mark Duncan Associated Press
Running back T.J. Duckett of the Lions ripped through the Browns defense in the second exhibition game, and the problem got worse last week in Denver.

BEREA, Ohio -- With all the attention paid to the quarterbacks, a dirty little secret that has haunted the Cleveland Browns for quite some time is going unnoticed.
Cleveland's run defense this preseason has looked similar to last season's, which ranked 29th in the NFL during a 4-12 campaign. The Browns will face another run-oriented team tonight in their final exhibition game against the Chicago Bears.

I really don't think Cribbs is that good of a KO return man but that is just my opinion. I do think Barklay could be just as good as Cribbs. Also if they thought very highly of Cribbs as a WR why did they go out and sign Carter and draft Wilson. I think that any of our wide receivers could have made some yardage on that reverse. There was such a huge gap there anybody could've gotten through it. I see your point regarding a backup QB but if we ever have to go that deep we are in serious trouble. I don't understand where Joe J. has been during the preseason games.

I want to Browns to win as much as anyone. I am just expressing my opinion's:)

Good thing you aren't the coach.
