Camp ends with big questions Quarterback still unsettled, no clear third wide receiver, some offensive line concerns
By Patrick McManamonBeacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Friday, Aug 24, 2007

The Browns got positive answers on some of their questions in training camp but have large ones still unresolved.
Camp broke Thursday with the quarterback position unsettled, no clear third wide receiver and some offensive line concerns.
There were positives in the play of rookie cornerback Eric Wright, rookie left tackle Joe Thomas, linebacker Antwan Peek and running back Jamal Lewis.
The Browns' hope: That the struggles of the quarterbacks do not negate the gains that are present in the running game.

Dorsey may have roster edge Offensive coordinator is his old college coach, so playbook is familiar
By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Friday, Aug 24, 2007
BEREA: With talk around the area about who should be the Browns starting quarterback, Ken Dorsey, the veteran from the University of Miami, has been the forgotten man able to ply his trade in relative anonymity without the glare of the spotlight.
He also may have an inside track when it comes to making the Browns' final roster when cuts begin in earnest next week. Dorsey, along with Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr., worked under the tutelage of new offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski when the coach served in the same position with the Hurricanes. That fact has made transitioning to this new offense easier, the quarterback said.

Rookie Joe Thomas has shown good run- and pass-blocking skills in grabbing the starting spot at left tackle.

When Derek Anderson, center, struggled and Brady Quinn, right, held out, Charlie Frye took the lead in the QB competition.

BEREA -- Charlie Frye ended training camp yesterday as the Browns' No. 1 quarterback.
With Derek Anderson's futility in camp and Brady Quinn's late arrival, Frye has a loose grip on the starting job with two preseason games remaining. He will start Saturday against the Denver Broncos and expects to play the entire first half.
"I've taken most of the reps with the ones (first team) this week, so I feel like I'm ready to play," Frye said. "I'm ready to go out and just fine-tune everything."

Four quarterbacks on the final roster?
"In San Francisco, we kept four quarterbacks my last year there and every single one of us played," Ken Dorsey said on Thursday.
Keeping four quarterbacks, perhaps only temporarily, would solve the riddle about what to do with the loser of the starting competition between Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson. It also would allow Dorsey to maintain his role as unofficial mentor to young Brady Quinn.

Frye stars, Browns win

Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis is stopped by the Denver Broncos defense during the second quarter of Saturday?s preseason game in
Denver.

DENVER A summer thought occurred Friday amid a 44-degree chill at the summit of Pike's Peak.

The toll was $10 for the spectacular 19-mile drive from Pike's Peak. Could it possibly be worth eight times that for to watch Antwan Peak in a game that didn't count?

Maybe it depends on what you're looking for.

There was this: Charlie Frye looked like a million for much of his third preseason stint, a 17-16 win over the Broncos. The No. 1 quarterback job is his to lose.

Before halftime, General Manager Phil Savage said it is "unrealistic'' to project rookie Brady Quinn - who looked good again - into the mix for the starting job Sept. 9 against Pittsburgh.

There's little doubt some Browns are responding, "It's silly not to at least think about it.''

Through three quarters, three QBs had sizzling passer ratings: Quinn 148.4, Frye 102.1, Derek Anderson 100.9.

Lewis, Frye have feature roles during scoring drive
Sunday, August 26, 2007
By STEVE DOERSCHUK

DENVER A million hallelujahs echoed around Ohio televisions when Jamal Lewis ran for a touchdown.

Browns first-stringers hadn't produced one through two preseason games. That was in stark contrast to Charlie Frye's opening drive in his quest to end the quarterback question.

Frye passed and scrambled the ball downfield. Lewis finished the 80-yard drive - consuming five-plus minutes -with a 1-yard plunge.

How often have the expansion-era Browns ever looked like that?

They even did it without Kellen Winslow Jr.

Browns' Quinn looks good, even on TD that wasn't

Sunday, August 26, 2007 3:59 AM
By Arnie Stapleton

Associated Press

DENVER -- Preseason games don't count and neither do touchdowns that are erroneously ruled incompletions, as Brady Quinn discovered last night.

Quinn was efficient and effective for the second straight game, leading the Cleveland Browns past the Denver Broncos 17-16, although it probably wasn't enough to win him the starting job over Charlie Frye.
Quinn threw a pass in the left flat that Joshua Cribbs turned into a nifty 20-yard touchdown to break a 10-10 tie in the third quarter, but the rookie from Notre Dame was robbed of another apparent TD toss on Cleveland's previous possession.

BROWNS INSIDER
Winslow on the bench; close shave for rookies

Sunday, August 26, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Denver- Tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was benched at the start of Saturday's game against the Broncos because of a coaches' decision, but Browns General Manager Phil Savage wouldn't say why.
"You'll have to talk to coach [Romeo Crennel] after the game," said Savage.
Savage said it had nothing to do with Winslow being in the wrong personnel groupings on the goal line last week against the Lions. Steve Heiden started in his place and Ryan Krause served as the second tight end.

DENVER: Just start Charlie Frye.
That's all the Browns need to do for now, with the opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers only two weeks away.
And yes, keep Brady Quinn in the mix as a backup. No more talk of Derek Anderson having the No. 2 spot. Give Quinn, the Notre Dame rookie, more time in practice, and lots of action when the Browns face the Chicago Bears on Thursday night.
In his second pro game, Quinn was impressive again. This meant more because he faced many of the Denver Broncos' first-team defenders when he took the field early in the third quarter as opposed to the Detroit Lions' third-stringers a week earlier.

Charlie Frye closing in as Browns starting quarterback after victory in Denver

QB picture clearing after win in Denver

Plain Dealer Reporter
All signs are pointing to Charlie Frye starting the opener against Pittsburgh, but rookie Brady Quinn is progressing quicker than anticipated.
Browns General Manager Phil Savage reiterated Saturday night that it would be unrealistic for Quinn to be ready to start by Sept. 9, especially considering his 11-day holdout. But Quinn has performed far better in the games than in practice - and has the organization buzzing.
"[Quinn] is as good as advertised," said receiver Joe Jurevicius, who's been to three Super Bowls in his nine seasons. "He's going to be a good quarterback in this league."

Tough Bernie Kosar smiles on Browns' future, Bill Livingston says

Monday, August 27, 2007 Bill Livingston
Plain Dealer Columnist
Bernie Kosar was the last (almost) great quarterback the Browns had. He thinks the savior now, no matter who the next quarterback will be, is offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski.
Kosar can wield a sharp tongue. He never shied away from speaking his mind as a player, and he doesn't as a television analyst during exhibition season either.
Some of us remember that, after a playoff loss in Miami following his rookie season in 1985, he ripped the Browns' play-calling and said the two-minute offense "just isn't at the NFL level." It led directly to the hiring of Lindy Infante as the team's offensive coordinator in the mid-1980s and to that era's agonizing series of Super Bowl near-misses.

Mum's the word on Browns' QBs
Monday, August 27, 2007
Bt SGTEVE DOERSCHUK

DENVER Brady Quinn hit the showers after a 17-16 win against the Broncos.

Nearby, Phil Savage was asked about something he said earlier.

Derek Anderson had just replaced Charlie Frye. It was about an hour before Quinn came in when Savage reiterated his stance on the rookie. It's "unrealistic'' for Quinn to start the opener against Pittsburgh, the general manager said.

After Quinn played lights out in his first two series, just as he had against Detroit, Savage was asked: Unrealistic ... still?

Savage gave a subtle nod and quietly said, "Yes.''

Then he did his best to muddle the QB situation for the Steelers.

"I thought all three quarterbacks did some positive things,'' Savage said. "It's what we needed to happen, and it happened.

Quarterback situation creates buzz
Quinn, Frye, Anderson each have passer ratings of more than 100 points in Browns' preseason win
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Monday, Aug 27, 2007
DENVER: Brady Quinn's usually long brown locks were buzzed almost to his scalp.
But the Browns' rookie quarterback took the ''involuntary haircut'' in stride and refused to reveal who was responsible for his strange indoctrination into the NFL.
His strongest comment was reserved for ESPN analyst Joe Theismann, the fellow Notre Dame quarterback who dissed Quinn's straggly hair on draft day.
''It's probably too short for Joe,'' Quinn joked.
The back of Quinn's head had a thin strip about two inches long that appeared shaved and was either a slip of the wrist or a crude attempt at a

Fans must count to 10 and...wait
Quinn could be guy, so break him in like Kosar

If you're a hard-core Browns fan, you are a member of a dysfunctional family. That's why some of you want Brady Quinn to start now.
You're hurting and you just want the pain to go away.
You've been abused by everyone from Art Modell to the NFL, from expansion to PSLs to the worst football that fans in this area have ever endured.
Since 1990, the Browns have had TWO winning records. That's two winning seasons out of 14, or a .143 average for those of you scoring at home.
In those 14 years, there have been seasons of 2-14 (1999), 3-13 (1990, 2000), 4-12 (2004, 2006) and 5-11 (2003, 1995).
So in 7-of-14 years, the Browns have been 5-11 . . . or worse!
Oh, they won one playoff game (1994).

Unless the Browns improve their defense against the run, it won't make much difference who the QB is this season. I am beginning to wonder about Grantham. Almost wish he would have been offered the MSU job. I thought Romeo's defensive coaching was his expertise but maybe it was Belichick who was really calling the shots in New England.
