Frye Anderson not getting it done -- time to get Quinn in
Bob Finnan, Morning Journal Writer
08/20/2007

FINALLY, there's hope. There hasn't been much to cheer about thus far in the preseason for Browns fans. They are getting tired of watching veteran quarterbacks wallow in mediocrity.

Now, there's reason to believe. Brady Quinn is on their radar.

Quinn, the first-round pick from Notre Dame, made his debut in the fourth quarter of the Browns' 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

Quinn impressive but not ready -- time to let Frye try
Jeff Schudel, Morning Journal Writer
08/20/2007

NOW we know Brady Quinn can move an offense down the field when facing a retreating prevent defense comprised of players who two weeks from Saturday will no longer be able to call themselves professional football players.

Understandably, fans are excited about the way Quinn rallied the Browns Saturday for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on drives of 63 and 92 yards, but the fact is he meets more resistance from the Browns in practice than he did from the Lions.

Rating the Browns quarterbacks

Monday, August 20, 2007 3:31 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

First-round draft pick Brady Quinn seemed unlikely to start the season as the Browns' No. 1 quarterback as the clock ticked on his 11-day training camp holdout. But Quinn's debut performance Saturday and a less-than-inspiring battle between Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson make it hard to keep the rookie out of the running. With training camp ending Thursday, coach Romeo Crennel still isn't ready to name a starter. "I think all the quarterbacks will tell you they can play better," he said after Saturday's 23-20 loss to Detroit. "We'll evaluate it and then make some determinations. We've got a couple weeks left before the season starts, and we'll see what happens."

Cribbs has been one of the best returners in the league the past few years. He probably isn't a long term option as the 3rd WR, but he gives you options and can play QB as well if needed. The reverse in the first game went for good yardage and I'm sure they have a pass to run off of that later on.

I really don't think Cribbs is that good of a KO return man but that is just my opinion. I do think Barklay could be just as good as Cribbs. Also if they thought very highly of Cribbs as a WR why did they go out and sign Carter and draft Wilson. I think that any of our wide receivers could have made some yardage on that reverse. There was such a huge gap there anybody could've gotten through it. I see your point regarding a backup QB but if we ever have to go that deep we are in serious trouble. I don't understand where Joe J. has been during the preseason games.

I want to Browns to win as much as anyone. I am just expressing my opinion's:)

Fans pushing for Quinn at QB, but Frye's still the guy

By Sean McClelland

BEREA ? Brady Quinn mania is sweeping the region.
In a fan poll conducted by a Cleveland TV station, nearly 60 percent said Quinn, the rookie from Notre Dame, should be the starting quarterback when the Browns open the season Sept. 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Frye gets nod to start Saturday Browns game

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Browns coach Romeo Crennel was not ready to fit rookie quarterback Brady Quinn for a Super Bowl ring. Crennel said Charlie Frye would start for the Browns in Saturday's preseason game in Denver.
Quinn, who threw two touchdown passes last Saturday, remains behind Frye and Derek Anderson.

Browns trying to repair broken down offense
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer

BEREA -- Coach Romeo Crennel worked his team overtime in practice yesterday because there was a lot to work on after the debacle in the first quarter Saturday night in a 23-20 loss to the Lions.

The final score, as the cliche goes, does not reflect how poorly the Browns played. The score was 23-0 before Ken Dorsey led a touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. Brady Quinn led two touchdown marches after that.

Here is the play-by-play of what happened once the Browns were on the Lions' 7 in a third-and-two situation in the first quarter:

Toning it down Edwards talks less in preseason
Tuesday, August 21, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA Maybe it's a quarterback derby thing. Or a Jamal Lewis thing. Or a shut-up-and-play thing.

Whatever the case, Braylon Edwards continues to talk less and convince everyone he'll produce more.

"I feel recharged," Edwards said Monday after catching as many practices throws as he has all month in an impressive camp.

"New focus. New attitude."

Edwards' ego still shows up. He still does that talking-about-himself-in-the-third-person thing - to an extent.

In declining to express his opinion on Charlie Frye being announced at the starting quarterback at Denver on Saturday, Edwards said: "Whatever Coach Crennel says, goes. The only thing I can worry about is No. 17 and what he's doing at all times."

It's Frye in Denver
Tuesday, August 21, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk

BEREA Rain spat at the roofs ringing the outdoor fields. Monday's work moved inside.

After a pass-happy practice, Browns Head Coach Romeo Crennel stood on one end of the field and explained what's going on with his quarterbacks.

Brady Quinn was almost finished with extra throwing. Crennel was looking the other way when Quinn let go with one of those "max effort" flings, along the lines of seeing whether he could bench press 450 pounds with one try.

In this case, throwing north to south, he was seeing whether he could launch one to Canton.

After a practice in which he unloaded a few majestic throws, one hitting Kendrick Mosley for a touchdown, Quinn really let one fly. It was a thing of beauty, sailing at least 70 yards in the air to Steve Sanders.

There was no "Brady, Brady" chant. Practice was closed to fans. A handful of observers - including Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson and Ken Dorsey - had to be impressed.

Fans want Quinn to start
Tuesday, August 21, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
repository sports writer

BEREA Charlie Frye will start Saturday at Denver but not necessarily Sept. 9 against Pittsburgh.

Romeo Crennel said after Monday afternoon's practice that Frye and Derek Anderson will get the first two playing shifts against the Broncos. Crennel said rookie Brady Quinn and Ken Dorsey, who produced the Browns' only touchdowns against Detroit, all in the fourth quarter, also will play. He didn't say in what order.

Many fans want Quinn to get a shot at starting the opener against Pittsburgh. In his only two series Saturday, he was cheered wildly and became a big story when he went 13-of-20 for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

Browns: Frye the starter, at least for now

Tuesday, August 21, 2007 3:30 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA --The coin flips and game-time decisions have ceased, for now.
Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel yesterday named Charlie Frye the starting quarterback for Saturday's preseason game against the Denver Broncos.
The move is a strong indication that it's Frye's job to lose. The third game is often the most important of the preseason, with starters resting the fourth and final game, and Crennel wasted no time telling the team and media his decision.
Crennel's coin flip before the preseason opener gave Frye the first start, and the coach made a game-time decision to start Derek Anderson last Saturday.

It's time to audible to Quinn
He needs to play against first-team defense in preseason as audition for regular season
Published on Tuesday, Aug 21, 2007

BEREA: The Browns have two options with Brady Quinn.
They've chosen the slow road, the road that allows Quinn to observe and to learn while other players (try to) quarterback the team.
There is a great difference, after all, between the fourth quarter of a preseason game against the Detroit Lions and the first quarter of the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
So Charlie Frye will start Saturday night against the Denver Broncos, and Quinn will play at some point.
There's another option.
Start Quinn.
Play him a half. At least.

BROWNS INSIDER
Coach Romeo Crennel says Cleveland Browns anxious to score touchdowns

Tuesday, August 21, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns coach Romeo Crennel attributed clock mismanagement problems inside the Detroit 10 in the first half on Saturday to tightness.
With Derek Anderson at quarterback, the Browns had to burn timeouts twice and were penalized once for delay. Those mishaps occurred inside the Detroit 10-yard line. The sequence climaxed in an Anderson interception.
"I think that sometimes when we get that close - because we haven't been that close before - we get a little overanxious," Crennel said. "We execute well out on the field, and then [on Saturday] we tightened up in the red zone. Soon as we relax down there, we'll be able to move the ball down there and put points on the board."
