Re-energized Edwards in control

The Browns receiver is more confident and says he has learned to keep his mouth shut.

BEREA ? Braylon Edwards is working with a script these days, which is probably good if you're the Cleveland Browns.
Last year, the talkative receiver seemed to say whatever popped into his head, and it got him into trouble. Now, heeding the advice of coaches and teammates, he's playing it smart ? and dull.

QB? Crennel keeps everyone guessing

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Wednesday, August 22, 2007
BEREA ? Stealing a page from the Butch Davis book on how to confuse everybody, Browns coach Romeo Crennel on Tuesday said quarterback Charlie Frye has competition for the starting job but would not say from whom.
Asked to identify the two main contenders to start Sept. 9 against Pittsburgh, Crennel said, "It's Charlie and ... yes," hinting that rookie Brady Quinn has passed Derek Anderson on the depth chart.

Browns: GM Savage expresses long-term Crennel support
Wednesday, August 22, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk

INDEPENDENCE If Romeo Crennel isn?t on the hot seat with two years left on a five-year plan, then that?s John Madden?s picture on your $5 bill.

Browns owner Randy Lerner needs to see a reasonable definition of improvement after two years and a 10-22 record.

So who is the Browns' ?yes' man?
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
08/22/2007

BEREA --?It is time to call in Kojak, Columbo, Jessica Fletcher and Baretta to solve the Great Browns Quarterback Mystery. Maybe even Barney Fife.

On a rainy morning, when bad weather forced another practice indoors, Coach Romeo Crennel said he isn't naming a starter for the regular season opener because he wants to keep the Steelers guessing.

Cleveland Browns' Quinn gets all morning reps

Quinn gets morning all to himself
Wednesday, August 22, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Brady Quinn has been yearning for more practice reps. On Tuesday morning, he got all of them.
Coach Romeo Crennel surprised his team by letting most of his veterans sleep in. That left Quinn as the only quarterback for the morning practice, which was scaled down to an hour.
Of course, Quinn received reps without the benefit of Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow Jr. and the other regulars. The only offensive veterans of note required to attend the morning workout were tight end Darnell Dinkins and right tackle Kelly Butler.

Anderson could be odd man out

Quarterback's poor performances in the preseason is a factor.

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Thursday, August 23, 2007
BEREA ? As training camp ends today, Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson finds himself in an interesting position.
Once perceived by many as the favorite in his competition with Charlie Frye for the starting job, Anderson now appears to be sliding down the depth chart ? partly due to the splashy debut of first-round draft pick Brady Quinn, but also his own performance.

Catching on becoming a big problem
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
08/23/2007

BEREA -- Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson, Brady Quinn or Ken Dorsey -- it might not matter who starts at quarterback for the Browns.

Halfway through the preseason and with training camp closing today, the wide receivers have been equal opportunity droppers. Braylon Edwards drops them and Tim Carter drops them when he is healthy enough to get on the field. Travis Wilson has done so many pushups, the punishment for dropping the ball, he is stronger than when training camp began.

Savage says Quinn won't start season opener
UPDATE: 9:24 AM, Thursday, August 23, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA Romeo Crennel said the Browns are down to two candidates to start the season opener against Pittsburgh: ?Charlie Frye and ... someone else.??

General Manager Phil Savage indicated this morning ?someone else?? isn?t the rookie.

?To think that Brady Quinn would be ready for the first game would be very unrealistic,?? the general manager said on the team?s AM radio flagship, WTAM. ?We have two tracks going. One track is to be competitive, to win as much as we can as soon as we can. The other track is to develop our quarterback of the future in the right way.??

Derek Anderson said after Wednesday?s practice he thinks he?s still in the running despite a rough outing against Detroit. Savage confirmed that.

BROWNS: Hard to pick a winner in this QB race
Thursday, August 23, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Talk to Browns bigwigs, players, coaches, scouts ... water boys. They leave you in the dark as to what?s going on in the quarterback race.

They won?t tell you what they think. One must try to read what they do.

Here is a glimpse of what Charlie Frye, Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson and Ken Dorsey did in the second half of Wednesday?s sweat bath of a practice.

SESSION ONE

The QBs and receivers were just playing catch. Dorsey lofted a lovely touch throw leading Kellen Winslow Jr. to the left sideline. Important caveat: No defensive players were on the field.

BROWNS NOTEBOOK: Tucker cautious with his praise
Thursday, August 23, 2007
BROWNS NOTEBOOK
STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA In one breath, Ryan Tucker sees the stars in reach for the Cleveland Browns.

?The running game is better than it?s been since I?ve been here,? he said. ?It?s on another level right now.?

In another breath?

?I don?t want to put a lot of false hope out there,? he said. ?We have a long way to go. In these practices, one day you can be on, and the next day you get the (snot) kicked out of you.?

The veteran right tackle is hoping to survive a suspension during which he must leave the team the first four weeks of the season. He practiced Wednesday at left guard, center and right guard.

?Hey, I was all-conference at center two years at Texas Christian,? he said. ?That?s still pretty natural.?

Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson believes he can still be the starter

Thursday, August 23, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
The prevailing perception heading into Saturday night's third preseason game in Denver is that Derek Anderson has squandered his opportunities to win the starting job.
But is that really the case? Anderson, No. 2 behind Charlie Frye for this game, doesn't think so.
"I feel like I do [have a chance to start the opener]," said Anderson. "But I feel like I've still got to go out there and control the huddle, move the ball, have a good game and score some points. That would be nice."

Cleveland Browns' Baxter's comeback on hold

Thursday, August 23, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Cornerback Gary Baxter has been set back in his bid to become the first player in NFL history to return from torn patella tendons in both knees.
Baxter has not participated in any team drills since he worked on the scout team 10 days ago and has been mostly idle since then with soreness in his knees. He hasn't even been seen on the sidelines of late.
The Browns are now faced with a tough decision.

Rookie QB only hope for Browns, Crennel

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

Friday, August 24, 2007
O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou quarterback?
Browns coach Romeo Crennel should be pleased that Brady Quinn "carved up" the Detroit Lions' third- and fourth-string defense.

If not, the spotlight could fully shine on how bad the team's QBs are. Recall Browns fans calling for Charlie Frye a couple years ago? Here he is. How do you like him now?
Seriously, how does one team end up with three third-string quarterbacks in Frye, Derek Anderson and Ken Dorsey? The Browns passed on Quinn at No. 3 in the draft ? probably a good move.
But then they traded valuable assets to move back up and take Quinn.
