Run defense priority now and in future
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer

CLEVELAND -- General managers always think ahead, so it is no surprise Phil Savage is thinking about improving the defensive line in 2008 through free agency and the draft, moves that if successful would make the Browns better in run defense.

''We obviously have some age on our defensive line,'' Savage said Saturday during a roster cut/season preview press conference. ''You have to do things in stages. The defensive line is an area where we've done some auxiliary work but we haven't been able to address it through the draft yet or through a high-price free-agent yet. I would certainly think that's on the rolodex coming up.''

Savage: Crennel is safe
Jeff schudel, morning journal staff

Nobody asked him, but Phil Savage answered the question anyway. The third-year general manager of the Browns said coach Romeo Crennel is not on the hot seat in 2007.

''There is no Romeo Crennel Watch in this building at 76 Lou Groza Boulevard in Berea, Ohio,'' Savage said Saturday during a press conference announcing roster moves. ''I've said it 10 times. He's the right man for the job. There's nobody else out there that could have won more than eight to 12 games over the last two years with the roster we had and the circumstances and the situations we've been through -- motorcycle accidents, injuries, all sorts of things.

Hopefully, some defensive linemen will show up on the waiver wire that might help give the Browns some help this year and they can bring in some FAs next year or may be luck out in round two of the draft.

Mixon:
Walking Wounded Prospects for the 2007 NFL Draft
4. CB Tim Mixon, California

Thought of as a top corner entering his senior season. Some even saw him as a better NFL prospect than his teammate, Daymeion Hughes. Mixon tore the ACL in his right knee in August and missed his entire season senior season (2006). An All-Pac-10 performer in 2005, Mixon finished with 46 tackles and was fourth in the Pac-10 with 13 passes broken up, including three interceptions. Mixon is also an excellent punt and kick returner. In 2005 he finished ninth in the country with a 14.9-yard punt return average, including a 79-yard return for a touchdown against Illinois. CB Tim Mixon is still recovering from the torn ACL he suffered in August, but plans on running on the second Cal Pro Day on March 29.

Browns rookie quarterback Brady Quinn cast his vote Monday for the return of quarterback Ken Dorsey, who was released Saturday.
"I think that's something we need on this team," Quinn said. "He's invaluable. You can't put a price on the things I think he brought to the table for us as a team."
Quinn said "it was a sad day" for him in more ways than one when Dorsey was let go.

I think Brady should keep his piehole shut for a while. I want him to play but he is going to be rubbing the organization the wrong way if he keeps them going public with these types of statements.

I hope Orpheus and Steinbach will be ready for the Squealers.

Charlie Frye

BEREA -- Browns coach Romeo Crennel officially named Charlie Frye the starting quarterback for Sunday's season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The move has been expected for more than a week. Frye clearly outperformed last year's backup, Derek Anderson, in training camp. Rookie Brady Quinn had the best preseason, but the team wants to be patient with his development.
"He's got experience, he's led this team before, and he's played against (Pittsburgh) before," Crennel said of Frye. "So what you try to do is you try to give your team the best chance to win, and I think this gives us the best chance to win."

Polamalu shows the way

BEREA Third-year Brown Brodney Pool gets his first full shot as a starting safety at a time when that market is booming.

Pittsburgh?s Troy Polamalu set a new standard just before training camp by signing a four-year contract extension worth $30.2 million. It made him the highest-paid Steeler ever.

?You notice things like that,? Pool said. ?Congratulations to him.

BEREA -- Brady Quinn is about to watch a football game from a vantage point he has not known in four years, and then it was only briefly.

Quinn became the starting quarterback at Notre Dame with nine games left in his freshman year and he remained the starter until last fall. But come Sunday when the Browns break open the 2007 season against the Steelers in Cleveland Browns Stadium, the rookie first-round draft pick will be on the sideline with Derek Anderson. The two quarterbacks will watch Charlie Frye try to break the Steelers' jinx over the Browns.

The Browns signed long snapper Ryan Pontbriand to a four-year contract extension on Tuesday.
But the club had no comment on a WKYC Channel 3 report that punter Dave Zastudil injured himself at Monday's practice and will miss the season opener against Pittsburgh.
The station reported the club was auditioning punters and one of them would be Chris Gardocki, who has punted for the Browns and the Steelers
