Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Cleveland.com

News and notes from Browns camp:
* Punter Dave Zastudil suffered a back injury Monday, but coach Romeo Crennel expects him to play Sunday against the Steelers. Just in case, Crennel tried out five punters on Tuesday, but sent them all home. Zastudil practiced today, but moved gingerly.
The injury comes on the heels of Zastudil's amazing preseason performance in Chicago, in which his first three punts were either downed or went out of bounds at the 10, 4, and 7. His 51-yarder in the third quarter was downed at the 1.
* Right tackle Kevin Shaffer (concussion) and quard Eric Steinbach (knee) practiced with the first-team line in the early portion that was open to the media.

Exactly what the Browns didn't need and this time, it has nothing to do with Staph.

CLEVELAND (AP) ? Browns cornerback Leigh Bodden drove a sport utility vehicle in reverse down a one-way street outside an airport, became verbally abusive with police and was arrested Wednesday.

Bodden, 25, refused to stop the vehicle when initially approached by an officer at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, said police Lt. Thomas Stacho. Bodden eventually pulled the vehicle to a curb, got out and walked toward an airport entrance, Stacho said.

When will they win a division game? When will rookie quarterback Brady Quinn start? Will Romeo Crennel be asked to pack up his belongings and vacate the premises?
All legitimate questions as the Browns prepare to open season No. 9 (can you believe it?) of their expansion rebirth Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

BROWNS: ?It?s put-up time,? says Jim Brown
Thursday, September 6, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Training camp hits a certain restless dead time.

Imagine: You haven?t eaten this week and you?ve been fishing all day, but if one doesn?t bite soon, you?re dead.

Wednesday was nothing like that at the Browns? complex.

BROWNS: Lewis wants the football
Thursday, September 6, 2007
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Jamal Lewis is no Jim Brown.

For one glorious season, he was.

Brown, perhaps the best running back in history, averaged an NFL-record 133.1 rushing yards a game for Cleveland in 1963. Jamal Lewis, Cleveland?s new backfield hope, averaged 129.1 yards for Baltimore in 2003.

BROWNS REPORT

STEVE DOERSCHUK

THE APPRENTICE New Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin was an intern in Cleveland in 2000, when Romeo Crennel was defensive coordinator. ?Romeo went above and beyond what one would expect in dealing with an intern,? Tomlin said Wednesday. ?So did Chris Palmer (Cleveland?s head coach then). All those guys were very good to me. ... At the time, I knew very little about the NFL. I wasn?t sure I was interested.? Crennel says Tomlin was ?very thorough? with any task assigned.

Roethlisberger wouldn't be shocked if Cowher returned to coach Browns
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
09/06/2007

BEREA -- Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is already playing mind games with the Browns.

Four days before the Browns and Steelers kick off the 2007 season, Roethlisberger opened up a can big enough to contain snakes, not the just the proverbial worms, at the end of a conference call yesterday when the subject of Bill Cowher returning to coaching came up.

Cowher, a former Browns linebacker and later a special teams coach under Marty Schottenheimer, was the Steelers head coach from 1992 until he retired after last season.
