Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

A new standard of stinkers for the Browns
Monday, September 10, 2007
By TODD PORTER

CLEVELAND

If civilization had gotten off to the kind of the start the Browns did Sunday, Adam and Eve still would be lost in the garden.

The Creator rested on the seventh day.

The Browns did, too.

UNEXPECTED DIFFERENCE MAKER
Monday, September 10, 2007

Punter Paul Ernster.

Background The 25-year-old signed with the Browns on Saturday after Dave Zastudil said his back was bothering him and would only hurt the team. Ernster was drafted by the Broncos in 2005 out of Northern Arizona.

They lost it here
Monday, September 10, 2007

Between Cleveland's awful offense and its not-so-special teams, two plays swung this game before beer had a chance to get warm. Punter Paul Ernster dropped a perfect snap on the fourth play of the game, and the Browns were called for four penalties on that play. Four penalties and they can't even make the play work? The Steelers took over at the Cleveland 22 and scored in four plays. On the second play of the next series, QB Charlie Frye was picked off, setting up the Steelers at the Browns 17. That led to a field goal and a 10-0 lead before many fans even reached their seats.

Tomlin deflects credit for Steelers' big win
Monday, September 10, 2007
By DON DETORE

CLEVELAND The young guy and the old man each had reasons to celebrate Sunday afternoon.

For 34-year-old Mike Tomlin, it wasn't so much that the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach won his debut. After all, the Steelers had beaten the Browns seven straight times and 13 out of the last 14 entering this matchup.

'I need to get better'
Monday, September 10, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND A few weeks ago, Romeo Crennel flipped a coin to decide on a starting quarterback.

What's next? Roulette?

The Browns opened the season Sunday with Charlie Frye as their starter against division rival Pittsburgh. By the time the Steelers were finished thumping Cleveland, 34-7, the Browns didn't have a starting quarterback.

Defense fades down the stretch

CLEVELAND Look at the bright side, Browns fans.

Mike Adams blew up Pittsburgh's Allen Rossum on a punt return.

OK, so a franchise can't be built around a special teams cover guy.

What, then, can the Browns take from Sunday's 34-7 loss that doesn't make them sick?

Early punt is a disaster; then Browns get worse
Monday, September 10, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk

CLEVELAND Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, a big load of garbage washed onto the Lake Erie shore.

Full of optimism that 2007 can be different, the Browns came out worse, not better, than during their inferior recent seasons.

CLEVELAND -- The sun rises in the east, sets in the west and the Steelers always expose the worst in the Browns.

It has been that way from the beginning of time, or at least since 1999, and yesterday in Cleveland Browns Stadium under a gloomy sky was no exception.

This season, just like the quarterback, may be Fryed
By Bob Finnan, Morning journal Writer

Rest in peace, Charlie Frye.

When one sorts through all the carnage from yesterday's debacle in the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the underlying theme will be that it will likely mark the end of the Frye era in Cleveland.

Weapons expose Browns' defense

CLEVELAND -- With a running back like Willie Parker, one can see why the Pittsburgh Steelers are known as a running team.

But quarterback Ben Roethlisberger longs to air it out in a vertical passing game.

Opener does not help QB quandary
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer

CLEVELAND -- Throughout most of preseason Romeo Crennel said he did not know who his starting quarterback should be, and after one game of the regular season he is as mystified as ever.

Charlie Frye started against the Steelers yesterday and was pulled with 6:34 left in the second quarter. He lasted even less than Ty Detmer in 1999. Detmer made it to the fourth quarter of a 43-0 loss to the Steelers.

I grew up a big Browns fan... and why not with Lou groza, Dante Lavellie, Mac Speedie, Bill Willis, Otto Graham? They were interesting even when the lost, which was seldom... but these guys don't just lose, they suck and they get worse each year. How sad.

Man, people were giving Romeo a ton of credit by saying.."Oh, why won't he just name a starter...why all the gamesmanship?"

He really didn't know who he should start at QB!!! :slappy:

Then, to show what kind of commitment he has to the guy he finally did choose, he gives Frye the hook before half time. Are you kidding me? To think we gave the first overall pick in next years draft to the Cowboys! Unbelievable.

how long could you leave frye in there? he was borderline retarded. dieken and donovan do the radio broadcast and are right next to chudzinski in the booth. they said he was going apesh1t over frye totally screwing up anything.

as for giving a pick to the cowboys, after watched the franderson twins play qb yesterday, how can you not justify giving dallas a top 5 pick for a qb?
