Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Good thing you aren't the coach.

No shit. Josh is probably one of the most dynamic players on this team if not the most. He is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball, who else can we say that about on this team?? Great move to get him in there returning punts as well. Look forward to seeing more of him as a #3/#4 WR this year too.

Quinn makes impact as Browns beat Bears

By the Associated Press

Friday, August 31, 2007

CHICAGO ? Brady Quinn says he's ready to make an impact for the Cleveland Browns and he did in the preseason finale. When his next opportunity comes remains to be seen.
The rookie from Notre Dame was efficient, if unspectacular, leading the Browns to a touchdown in a 19-9 victory over the Chicago Bears on Thursday night.

Browns win; Quinn sharp Rookie quarterback makes bid to take over starting role, but probably not for opener

CHICAGO: If the father of the zone blitz wasn't lying in wait in the first game, rookie Brady Quinn might be the consensus choice as the Browns' starting quarterback.
Testing the Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau might be something Browns coach Romeo Crennel would rather have Quinn experience Nov. 11, the second time the teams face.

Returns are good as Browns top Bears

Posted by Tony Grossi August 31, 2007 00:28AM

Chicago - When you're the defending NFC champions, your top priority in the fourth preseason game is to get everyone of note out of the game before they get hurt. And that's the way the Chicago Bears approached Thursday night's final scrimmage at Soldier Field.
Their starting quarterback played one series. The rest of their starting offense and their starting defense played two series.
The Browns happily took advantage and cruised to a 19-9 victory, closing down their exhibition schedule with three wins and one loss.

Frye's the guy

CHICAGO Brady Quinn keeps cranking out touchdowns, but Charlie Frye is the guy for Cleveland.

In a 19-9 win Thursday night over the Bears, Frye started and played two innocuous series. Afterward, Head Coach Romeo Crennel told the team that Frye will start the Sept. 9 opener against the Steelers.

"Charlie is our quarterback," veteran wideout Joe Jurevicius said.

For the third time in as many weeks - in his longest playing stint since being drafted - Quinn led a touchdown drive early in his shift.

Quinn showed touch, precision and zip on a nine-play, 50-yard drive in the second quarter. Using short throws to move the ball, he hit wideout Travis Wilson three times and running back Jerome Harrison once.

CHICAGO Hours before kickoff, a transplanted Canton native showed a visiting Cantonian to the lake side of the 44th floor of the CNA Building.

What a view.

A mile southeast of the building called ?Big Red,? Joshua Cribbs returned the opening kick and didn?t stop there.

What a show.

Bearly a win for Browns
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer

CHICAGO -- Preseason ended last night in Soldier Field for the Browns, and now they have just nine days to work out the bugs in an offense that still has trouble scoring touchdowns.

The Browns knocked off the Bears 19-9 to finish the preseason 3-1. The Browns are 19-18 in preseason since returning to the NFL in 1999. They are 40-88 in the regular season.

Browns' QB need not be mystery man
Team could mimic announcement of pope
Published on Saturday, Sep 01, 2007

Browns coach Romeo Crennel wondered this week why there were so many questions from the media about his starting quarterback for the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
''I don't understand the deal with the quarterback situation,'' he said.
Really, there is no deal. It's just a question, and it is America, so folks have a right to ask questions, just as Crennel has a right to dismiss them as unimportant.
Crennel sometimes likes to kid with the media, so it's possible this fine gentleman was doing just that.

No heat where Crennel is sitting
Savage backs coach; Baxter survives cuts
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Sunday, Sep 02, 2007
BEREA: The notion that Browns coach Romeo Crennel is on the hot seat is a national myth.
At least that's the picture General Manager Phil Savage painted Saturday as the team announced its final cuts.
Only nine active players remain from the 2004 roster Savage and Crennel inherited from the Butch Davis era. Savage said that's one of the reasons that Crennel carries a 10-22 record into the Sept. 9 regular-season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
''There is no Romeo Crennel watch in this building on 76 Lou Groza Blvd. in Berea, Ohio,'' Savage said. ''I've said it 10 times: He's the right man for the job. There's nobody else out there who could have won more than eight to 12 games over the last two years with the roster we've had and the circumstances and the situations we've been through . . . motorcycle accidents, injuries, all sorts of things. To expect anything different
than that is unrealistic.

No Ken do: Dorsey out as backup

Anderson stays despite losing battle with Frye
Sunday, September 02, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
In what probably was the most hotly debated issue in paring their final roster to 53 players, the Browns chose to keep Derek Anderson as a backup quarterback over Ken Dorsey.
They also saved a roster spot for cornerback Gary Baxter, keeping alive his historic comeback from double patella tendon surgery.
Other notable nuggets from the roster cuts, which were announced solely by General Manager Phil Savage:

BROWNS INSIDER
Cleveland Browns GM Phil Savage stands by Romeo Crennel

Sunday, September 02, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
In opening remarks to reporters on Saturday, Browns General Manager Phil Savage gave coach Romeo Crennel an unsolicited vote of confidence.
"I'll emphasize again today, there is no Romeo Crennel watch in this building," Savage said. "I've said it 10 times, he's the right man for the job. There's nobody else out there that could've won more than eight to 12 games over the last two years with the roster we had and circumstances and situations that we've been through. Motorcycle accidents, injuries, all sorts of things.
"To expect anything different than that is unrealistic. I felt we overachieved in '05 and underachieved to a degree in '06. Six [wins] and four is 10. Five wins a year is about where we were from a talent standpoint."
