Clemson Tigers (official thread)

Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence will miss Notre Dame game due to COVID-19

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence will not be able to play next week against Notre Dame, coach Dabo Swinney said Saturday.

Lawrence was tested for COVID-19 on Wednesday and the school announced on Thursday he tested positive, meaning he must isolate for a minimum of 10 days per ACC medical advisory group protocols.

As part of the return-to-play protocols, Lawrence has to pass a series of cardiac exams, and Swinney said going through all the protocols would not allow him to be back in time for next Saturday.

Clemson vs. Notre Dame: Tigers down two key defensive pieces for pivotal showdown with Irish

The Tigers will be without a pair of defensive starters again on Saturday

No. 1 Clemson already knew it was going to be without star quarterback Trevor Lawrence and starting linebacker James Skalski for Saturday's showdown at No. 4 Notre Dame. But the list of notable absences for the game grew again Wednesday when head coach Dabo Swinney revealed that the Tigers are also expected to be without defensive tackle Tyler Davis and linebacker Mike Jones Jr.

Just sayin': This probably SUCKS. If Notre Same beats Clemson, then an undefeated ND plays a 1 loss Clemson again in the ACC Championship Game. Clemson will win that game giving both schools 1 loss and probably both schools get invitations to the CFPs. It's probably to Ohio State's benefit if Clemson wins the game this Saturday and then beats ND again in the ACC Championship Game.

I think I'll take the ND win and Clemsin loss now tbh. I think ND is staring at a loss to either @BC or @UNC in one of the next 2 weeks following the Clemson game. That is a tough 3 game stretch. Bama's offense looks good but their defense still looks suspect. Could LSU, Auburn or UF/UGA (in SEC CG) maybe knock them off?

I want to be #1 and get the benefit of playing the weaker #4 seed like LSU got the distinct advantage of doing last year.

ND is irrelevant to OSU bc I fully expect OSU to run the table in this super-focused, shortened season. And I really wouldn't mind ND getting in again tbh, and even getting matched up against OSU bc I think they are a fraud and any of the other 3 would smoke them in a play-off game.

Plus, if Clemson and ND end up playing twice, nobody wants the potential for them to play a 3rd time in the CFP, so if they win now and then get waxed in ACC CG with Trevor Lawrence at QB then it's settled and the committee can just eliminate a 1-loss ND from the discussion and pick another 1-loss team as the #4 seed.

Idk if the CFP committee puts OSU at #1 playing less games than the other 3 teams in the CFP...

If tOSU is going to be in the CFP, I want Clemson to be there as well. I could give two shits less if ND is there this year - or ever again, for that matter - but I want to see this Bucks team play Clemson, in the finals, if at all possible.

The only way tOSU ends up #1 is if they are undefeated and every other team has at least 1 loss (Bama & Clemson would probably need 2.) Even then, I can see the ESPiN-influenced committee leaving tOSU at #2 to ensure they have the toughest run to the finals.

We're absolutely rooting for the Apostle Sweeney to dismantle the domers this weekend. ND wins, and it's "what a great, quality win for Notre Dame and....ummmm....this doesn't really count as a loss for Clemson because they didn't have Barbie."

More University/AD related but this is the stuff that is infuriating and athletic departments and universities as whole need to get their sh*t together. Ridiculous for some of these sports programs and students the univeristies are supposed to serve.

edit to summarize- Clemson drops $55M on a football facility. Pays Dabo 10 year, $93M, but cuts track and field due to “financial challenges”

And this is across the country as we lose site of public universities’ missions.

Anyway, go footbaw.

As with Clemson's other ranked challengers, it's fair to wonder whether Notre Dame stands a chance

Consider, though, that Clemson has built up so much capital it can "afford" to lose this game. If it then wins out, there is a possible rematch with Notre Dame waiting in the ACC Championship Game. Who is going to keep Clemson out of the CFP as an 11-1 ACC champion? Especially one that would have beaten the only team that handed it a loss? Especially one that is a known commodity inside that CFP Selection Committee meeting room.

There's a trivia question in above article:

That's from the man (i.e. Dabo) who with a victory would become the fifth coach to win his first three games against Notre Dame. The others … Amos Alonzo Stagg, Ara Parseghian, Jimmy Johnson and Nick Saban.

Who would have guessed that Ara Parseghian (since you associate Ara with Notre Dame) would be one of the coaches? Ara Parseghian (with Northwestern) actually won his first 4 games against ND (1959, 1960, 1961, and 1962). Saban did it in 1997, 1998, and 1999 with Sparty and Johnson did it in 1984, 1985, and 1987 with Da U. I have no idea when Stagg did it. I would have guessed some USC coach (i. e. McKay, Robinson, or Petey) and (maybe) an Army coach back in the 40s would have been one of them.
