Charlie Strong (former coach)

Strong is a great coach. Got to meet him in '97 at ND's football camp, he was my position coach on DL. Urban was there too, but I only got to shake his hand.
Strong's a tough dude, and a little intimidating, but he commands your respect. I think he's changing the culture at Texas for the better, and it could be a matter of time before he has them whipped into shape. I expect if they don't start turning things around by this year it'll be next year...if the administration gives him that long that is.

I agree with all that, but the last line is key. Texas is not a healthy situation for a coach attempting a turnaround. You have easily the most unrealistic expectations in NCAA football, and those expectations are completely out of whack to their actual track record over the last forty years. The unrealistic expectations are combined with a dynamic where the school's largest and most influential donors are intimately obsessed with and prone to meddling with the foosball. And keep in mind that Strong was not their guy. All this talk about Texas being the best job in the country is all based on paper analyses of homegrown talent and AD revenue. In reality, I think it's one of the worst jobs in the country. Even if you can succeed, you create a beast that can't be controlled. Look how quick and how viciously they turned on Mack after bringing them their only sustained national relevance in over a generation.

Let's not go overboard... that statement could just as easily apply to scUM and ND.
No coincidence... also the 2 programs they hold in highest regard and wish to emulate on shaggy.

So would I be right in assuming that beating a "ranked" OU guarantees Strong will make it to year3?

Well, I think Charlie Strong is an outstanding coach and, if given a chance, will eventually get the Texas program turned around. However, a fair chance is into the 4th year when he is actually playing with his recruits, etc.

Unfortunately in the coaching profession it is frequently "what have you done for us lately" and/or "you are only as good as your last game". The college alumni and administrators can be real fickle too; so I'll say the win over Oklahoma just actually guarantees he'll still be the coach for their next game. (i.e. vs Kansas State on 24 Oct)......:roll1:

I don't think it's asking too much for them. To be a solid team in year 3. 8-4 or better. At a place like Texas, your talent alone should get you to 8-4. Coaching and scheme gets you championships.

The talent for most of the last decade at Texas is pretty average. Strong needs a few years to get the recruiting up to par. His predecessor lost most of their top in state talent. At the same time Strong isn't known as the best recruiter so I dont know if it will happen. But at the same time the entire big 12 recruiting has been dog shit for the last decade. That is how Baylor and tcu were able to win. The conference is shit and that's why they went 2-5 in bowl games last year. I give up.

Kinda wonder if Charlie isn't kicking himself a little bit for winning vs OU... now he's kinda locked into Tejas with OBC leaving he woulda been an easy hire there
