Charlie Strong (former coach)

Don't be obtuse. Brown was there for 15 years and had a lot of things that went well. Yeah, he got fired. It happens. Who was the last coach at our school who didn't get fired?
Not being Obtuse - the fact is with the talent he had he was not a Great coach - most folks say he spent more time glad handing all the boosters and shit - Mack was a master politician and a good coach. You don't realize the time suck and the politics involved in a job like Tejas where most folks can NAME the boosters.
He's a lot greater than any other coach they have had since they fired Darrell Royal.
This is no doubt but times have changed they expect to win now and all the time, forgetting their place in history.

Those guys both inherited programs that were ready to win championships in their 1st or 2nd year. Mack built Texas back up from mediocrity into a dominant program that had a great 10-year run including that NC in the middle. (If he got in today, he'd be top-20 in wins among HOF coaches with 244.) He was never known as a great gameday tactician or anything, but he was a great recruiter and program-builder as a head coach. As a recruiting fan I was always in awe of the way he loaded up UT's classes with 5-star linemen a year before signing day.

I'd say it was more of a six year (04-09) run, but those six years were UT's only stretch of consistent national relevance since the mid-70s. Place has been a coacjing graveyard since Royall. If Strong gets run halfway through year 3, I'd think long and hard about why so many have failed there.

Paul Brown. However, Ohio State has had only five coaches since 1951. Woody and Tressel were fired for slugging an opposing player and cheating respectively while Earl and Cooper were given 9 and 13 years before finally being let go. Not a comparable situation to Texas.

Really why we're blessed to have an AD whose fundraising is built around smaller donations and a university where the whales are pretty indifferent to the football program.

And like clockwork, Red throws down the gauntlet. Reason #1 why the UT job is greatly overrated.

http://www.chron.com/sports/longhor...-Red-McCombs-Whole-world-knows-we-9614040.php

But he hasn't contacted the president or AD and doesn't intend to so there is no concern about him telling them how to do their job...

"We know we have issues, and the whole world knows we have issues, so it does hurt," McCombs said.

McCombs said he has not contacted UT president Greg Fenves or athletic director Mike Perrin to express his feelings about the coaching situation, and said he does not intend to do so. He also declined to say whether he would advocate for a change if UT leaders asked him for his opinion.

Just shows how crazy this whole world is. Just over 2 years ago he was one of the hottest names in recent memory. Now look at him. Makes one wonder how long Kirby Smart will get at UGA, etc. Once you aren't the next big thing, you ain't shit

You don't even get the 4-5 year thing anymore at the big schools it seems.

More like 2-3
