Game Thread CFP Playoff Cotton Bowl, tOSU vs Texas, Fri. Jan. 10th, 7:30 ET on ESPN

Are you telling me Styles should be a safety or we're getting juiced 40 times?

I would be shocked if Styles ran a legit laser timed 40 in the 4.3 range. He seems more like a mid 4.5 guy or maybe slightly faster. I mean he has the speed to play safety but I wouldn't want him matched up with X or outside receivers on an island.

Grading on a curve, he's handed it as well as possible. Impossible to have this situation without some controversy.
Comparing their body of work this year, Arch has looked better, but it was against much worse competition when Quinn was injured. They both looked like ass in the first Georgia game. Despite how frustrating he can be at times, Quinn probably gave us the best chance to win over the course of the entire season, but that's just a hunch. His maturity and calm (bordering on lackadaisical) nature has mostly been a valuable intangible asset this year.

But he's inconsistent. Hard to tell how much of that is Sark overcomplicating things. I guess we'll know next year. He's probably outside the top 25 FBS QBs in terms of deep balls. Other than Bama in 2023 and Q4/overtime of the Peach Bowl against ASU, he has not been clutch (though he hasn't had to be very often). He often comes out of halftime looking like he forgot how to play football, but see the Sark comment above. He's not very mobile and he takes a lot of sacks, though some of that has been lingering injuries. Throws a catchable ball that sometimes lacks zip. He follows up his spurts of brilliance (usually 1-2 quarters per game) with a lot of sloppiness and WTF moments.

Overall, I'm grateful for Quinn. He's been a good quarterback for UT. Will be interested to see how he does with a different coach, whether that's in the NFL or another CFB team next year.

I don't think Arch would've beaten Georgia either time. But he's the guy next year.
Damn it’s cool to have you back…

How healthy are you guys? I saw both your tackles get banged up vs ASU?

Either that or the spring game, but around then. That Texas crowd was so packed I had to carry my dog like a sack of flower for a quarter mile to get there
Looks like the Spring Game 2005 was the plan and bad weather derailed it, the shirts got shipped by @ScarletInMyVeins shortly after that.

Appreciate it! Thanks for the hospitality.

Both OTs, Banks and Williams, will play. Williams probably could have played against ASU if necessary, but was kept out to be safe, since there isn't much dropoff with his backup Goosby. Both being down would suck (and did against ASU), but thankfully looks unlikely in the Cotton Bowl.

Only notable injury is Bond. He was a clear WR1 in the first half of the year. Then he injured his ankle and hasn't been the same since. Will probably play in the Cotton Bowl, but unlikely he'll make an impact, unless something changes in the next week. Matthew Golden has stepped up nicely, but losing Bond has changed the dynamic quite a bit. Bond could take over a game. Wingo is going to be a star, but he's a freshman, and there aren't many Jeremiah Smiths. Maybe next year. Moore is solid but won't take over a game. The 4th option is Bolden, who is an outstanding return guy but doesn't get a lot of targets when he's on the field.

On a similar note, the RB room is thin because RB1 and RB3 got injured before the season. Blue is great in space but struggles to get tough yards between the tackles. Wisner is solid all purpose back and has had some great games against some decent defenses, but was quiet in the Georgia losses and against ASU. Gibson is a freshman and is a tough runner but not an every-down back yet. We really need someone who can get tough yards between the tackles. He didn't play against ASU but probably should have in hindsight. Sark is going to have to change the game plan to generate some kind of ground game against the Buckeye defense (lessons hopefully learned against UGA). So I wouldn't be surprised if Gibson gets meaningful carries.

Awesome!

Both tackles for Texas played vs ASU I thought? Or did one get hurt during the game and get held out?

The parallels are eery, except Ryan tends to get too simple/timid more than cute like Sark.

OSU entered this season with 3-4 good OL and 1 high level OT and a lot of questions. They haven't recruited OT properly for years, and their only good one was a portal guy (Simmons). They lost that LT (Simmons) for the year vs Oregon. Judkins broke his hand that week in practice, then gave up a fumble a few days later. Then Lanning kicks it off Caleb Downs at full speed, Oregon has their first game without turnovers, and OSU still nearly wins if not for a DB being rewarded for interfering and being too weak to actually stop JJ.

OSU licks their wounds and tries to regroup up front, then his backup got hurt, They had one good interior OL backup, but somehow they kicked their LG (who wasn't playing great) out to LT and he dominated Abdul Carter in Happy Valley, who is going to be a top-10 pick in April. The line starts to establish some physicality, but then the AA OC from Bama was also lost for year carrying a TV.

The offense was sputtering, and then against a Michigan team without a good secondary (with or without Will Johnson), Day decided to pound the rock inside. It didn't help that Howard got hurt early and lost most of his lateral movement (even to throw).

That offense had Ryan's fingerprints all over it. All of Chip's constraints and styles were gone, and they tried to beat Michigan at a street fight with their dual top-15 talents at DT. He almost got away with it, and that may have been the death sentence for any title chaces.

They had a serious heart to heart as a team, lots of views and pleasantries were shared, and they unleashed this monster that was there the whole time.

The knock on Howard is that he makes plays for both teams, but that's also true for Ewers. He hasn't been doing that for awhile, and has gone from being a upper end college QB to a guy throwing dimes. He'll never have an NFL arm but he has the toughness and the ability to pound the rock that has been missing from OSU's offense for many years (it likely leaves again next year with Sayin's build).

Limas fucking Sweed one of the best names in CFB history and I hate him and his whole family
I was in the end zone he scored that final touchdown for Texas in 2005. It’s funny how you can remember things.

I remember seeing that pass in the air and I could quickly do the math on the arc that “oh shit he’s got a shot at this”.

Such a crazy game! I almost passed out from screaming when AJ Hawk intercepted that Vince Young pass. I was literally not the same cheering after that lol
