CBF40's Look at '10 recruiting

Some OSU insider's believe that we may lead for James and he may not be headed to UC as some seem to think...

While I wouldn't be shocked, Honor&Glory's info is usually dead accurate on Cincy guys. I really hope James picks OSU but I have always got this vibe that he is going to UC...hope I'm wrong though.

The OSU scout guys are the only people on the planet who seem to think OSU isn't completely out of it, let alone leading. I have heard it's all UC for him, like most people, but Nevada is extremely confident, so who knows?

UC "fans" are certain that it's down to ND and UC, although they never give OSU credit for anything; like before he cut his list to three schools, it was ND, UC and TENNESSEE, who never had a chance.

According to our scholarship breakdown, we have five more spots left for this class. Assuming Hyde makes it here next season and a JR declares early, that number will stay the same. Here's how I see it:

QB: we are set. With positive reports about Guiton and where we are with Miller, I don't see us taking another QB in this class.

RB: we are set. Boom and Saine are still relatively young players. They are going to be the cornerstone of this position. Berry and Hall, especially Berry, look promising early on. With two big backs in Smith and Hyde coming in, I say we are set here as well.

FB: Homan has been getting good vibe, and Martin has been moved into the big back/short yardage role. The only question here is how long Tressel waits before making Georgiades a scholarship player.

TE: I think coaches are content with having three guys for now. If Stoneburner doesn't seem like a trench player, or if Fragel looks too good at Tackle, then the staff may go after one more. But don't forget how long people had been calling Hartsock a Tackle, and it never happened. TEs at OSU are tackles.

WR: With Louis in the fold, I am tempted to say that we are set. What we are missing is a tall weapon in the redzone. Stoneburner may be that guy, if Tressel chooses to use him that way. I still think it's likely that we take Williams, if he has the grades.

OL: Can't blame the coaches for not being more aggressive with OL recruiting, since we are only losing Cordle this year, and there are a lot of impact underclassmen. I would like to see us take one more guard/center, preferably Linder.

DT: Can't say I am too excited about Hankins at this point. Talbott and Tomlison are off the table. I would like us to land Shariff, but this might be a wait and see situation with regards to how well our young DTs do this fall (Goebel, Mobley, Simon, and Bellamy).

DE: we are stacked at weakside DE/Leo spot. Even if Gibson goes to the NFL after this season, we'd still had Williams, Thomas, Wells, Newsome, and Turner. At strong side DE, we are losing a couple of bodies in Wilson and Rose. Fellows looks very promising, and depending on how DT shakes out, Mobley may end up here as well. Both Baldwin and Moore are also candidates to compete down the road. I tend to think that we are set here as well.

LB: Hicks would be luxury in what is already a very deep position.

CB: Here's where it gets interesting. Amos is gone after this year. Chekwa might be gone too for the NFL, and you never know when Torrence may decide to focus on baseball. With Evege not being a factor up to this point, it will be up to Howard and one of the freshman to step up. Landing Joyner and/or Shaw would be awesome.

S: Hines looks to be a full-time starter next season. Reading between the lines, it seems that the coaches like the combo of Domicone and Johnson for the future. In case if anything doesn't work out, Wood, Hagan and Bryant will provide competition.

ST: Sounds like we are looking for a punter as well. If that's the case, I hope Hagerup can be that guy.

That's seven names in scarlet competing for five spots. We don't currently enjoy an outright lead for Joyner, Linder, Hicks or Hagerup, so it's likely that a couple of them may not end up here. If more than one JR declares for the draft, then additional spots may open up. Gibson looks ready, and depending on how the season goes, Chekwa and/or Heyward may follow. Also, if Rowell doesn't make it due to academic reasons, that's one more open spot.

Current verbals (c/p from cb40):

QB - Taylor Grahm
RB - Rod Smith
WR - James Louis
OL - Andrew Norwell
DE - David Durham
DE - J.T. Moore
DT - Darryl Baldwin
LB - Jamel Turner
LB - Scott McVey
DB - Chad Hagan
K - Drew Basil

My thoughts

1-we don't take a TE, that ship' goes to Tyrone Williams, whom we take along w/ Corey Brown.

2-Erick Howard seems to be a good bet to be added to this class-2 RBs-maybe Hyde gets the boot, so that opens an extra spot for Howard

3-If Linder/Henderson/James want to come aboard, we welcome them, if not, no great loss and the scholly goes elsewhere.

4-I have a sneaking suspicion we done w/ DL recruiting for this class-no Hankins, no late DT, but Baldwin will windup at DT.

5-Hicks will eventually be a Buckeye,IMO. Lakota West kids always send thetOSU staff on a merry chase before committing.

6-Luc isn't happening.

7-I think we get Shaw and Joyner, add in Bryant and Hagan, voila, #1 DB class in the country if all goes well.

For all the squawking, this could turn out to be one of the better potential groups of skill players and DBs recruited at tOSU in quite some time, if the cards-aka-Brown,Joyner, and Shaw fall right in addition to the current commits. Aside from QB, there were no pressing position needs for this class-the coaches can recruit for depth and go for the best available player at any # of positions w/out worrying about simply stockpiling bodies.

QB - Graham
RB - Smith
RB - Howard
WR - Louis
WR - Williams
OL - Norwell
OL - James
DE - Durham
DT/DE - Moore
DT/DE - Baldwin
LB - Turner
LB - McVey
LB - Hicks
CB - Bryant
CB - Shaw
CB/S - Joyner
S - Hagan
K - Basil
ATH - Brown

That leaves up to 3 open spots.

1 goes to a DT type nobody's talking about IMO. If Henderson wants in you take him, same with Luc (though I very much doubt he comes North). If Shaw can talk Riley into coming with him, you never know what could happen there.

EDIT- Yes I meant Shaw not Hicks, and I also forgot to put my ATH guy In C Brown.

You mean Shaw, I assume? Would be an awesome class either way though!

I am guessing you meant to put Shaw in place of using Hicks twice. I like that list and believe some of those skill players would be a top 5 class. I would love to see Corey Brown on that list. Go Bucks

RB - Don't think Hyde ever plays here...Think we take Howard in this class.

OL - Think we add James and one more...

DT - Think we add one more...Floyd would be a huge get...don't see it happening.

P - Still up in the air...Leaning towards no at this point

I agree with everything else, other than I think Brown is still very much in play.

QB - Grahm
RB - Smith
RB - Howard
WR - Louis
WR - Williams
OL - Norwell
OL - James
OL - Linder
DE - Durham
DE - Moore
DE/DT - Baldwin
DT - Think we take one...
LB - McVey
LB - Turner
LB - Hicks
DB - Hagan
DB - Joyner
DB - Shaw
DB - Bryant
Ath - Brown
K - Basil

So that leaves me thinking we have 10 spots. With a class around 21...I think the class will be 20 or so, not sure who to take off.

Out of those 11 I would feel solid in saying that we land at least 6 or more of them. I think we have a pretty solid feel for how our class will look, just hoping that some of the big fish come our way. (Henderson, Luc, Joyner, Hicks, etc) to really put this class up in the top 7 or so.

Now with Riley legitimately interested in us, I'm wondering if we are just looking for room before we offer? I personally would prefer to not take another RB unless it is Brown (who also plays WR), and just take Riley. I think Hagan will play Star strictly, leaving only Bryant as a safety. I know Joyner could play safety as well, but I would love to see Riley in this class. My guess for the final spots as of now:

Shaw, Williams, Henderson, Hicks, Joyner, Bryant, and Brown. I think Henderson wants to stay in Big Ten country but also wants to play in the national spotlight, thus I see us signing him. USC is going to be real tough to beat but I think we win this one. Also, I think Linder is legitmately interested in us and I would love to see him in this class along with Henderson. Still a ways to go on him it seems though. Personally, I see James going to UC. I see the number in this class possibly reaching 18 but I don't know about 20. If it does, I would guess a DT and Riley.
