CBF40'S Look at '09 recruiting

The only thing missing on CFB40's list is a big back in the Beanie or Mo C mold. I'm disappointed things don't seem to be working out with Hyde. If we land most of these recruits, we will have the most talent ever during the 85 scholarship era. The next 5 or 6 football seasons should be very enjoyable.:) :osu:

I think we could get by without recruiting a QB for 09 but then you would have to get 2 QB's in 2010. You do not want to be stuck with only having to QB's on your roster in 2011 because if you only take one in 2010 the other QB on your roster would be a true freshman and that is not good if Bauserman would get hurt.

I honestly hate the idea of ever bringing in two QB's in a class...One of the most important things people will tell you with recruiting is it isn't the ones you don't get that hurts you it is the ones that you do get that don't pan out...So if you take 2 QB's in the same class you are wasting a schollie unless you value the backup QB that much, and it is most likely one of them will transfer anyway to get PT...

In the 08 09 10 11 11 season we will be loaded if the recruits pan out...it will either be Pryor or Bauserman leading the way at the QB position...

But in 12 we won't have a senior or a junior at the QB position...We are bringing in all these stud recruits in this class, there is no reason why we shouldn't have a Qb, if not we are going to be looking at a roster of 1RS SO, 1 RS FR, and 1 FR...

I mean we can still sell a QB this year on the idea of having 2 years seperation from other QB's and have 3 years in the system before taking over...If we were going to redshirt Pryor it would be different but we are not...

The QB is the most important position on the field and there is no reason to not take one in this class IMO...

Think about this as some of you have said we couldn't turn down Banks or Adams, or whoever to take a QB...

But if we take Banks as a 7th db, how much is he really going to effect the game over what a QB would...Maybe Adams is a different story as he is a big time DT recruit and we could use him to go along with Simon, but IMO you take a pass on a guy like Muldoon to get Adams in the class then pass on a QB...

Now keep in mind I am not saying to reach, but there have been some guys that have expressed some interest in us, and we are just starting to evaluate the QBs...Look for an offer to Newton soon...

We will have national championship talent, I would like to have a national championship caliber QB and not have a situation like 04 where we had two QB's in their RS so year and neither was ready to take over the reigns, and they were both Elite 11 QBs...

Great post. I agree with keeping them in the pipeline even if they are not a top 5 candidate.

Case in point - the very Joe Baserman who looked so good Saturday was rated the #55 QB out of HS (Right between Grant Gregory - IU - and the mighty Joe Joe Brown - KY.)

Agreed, great point on Bauserman...and agreed on another great post and wake up call from 40! Getting started on checking out Newton!
Oh, and thanks, 40, for updating the thread!

I guess I don't see why people are thinking we are slipping with Hyde...the only reason there hasn't been more news is he wasn't able to make it to the spring game while lots of other Florida kids were.

Well first thought has to be where do we fit him...If we get Hall and Berry seems to be the best rb on the board...Do we have room for Hall in the slot or in the defensive backfield...There hasn't been much talk after teh initial this is my dream offer, and now the recent news of the staff telling Golden to add 15 lbs and they will offer...

Well, I hope we haven't slipped w/Hyde because I personally think he's a HUGE asset, literally. Want badly to see him in S&G! AND, now that we have ascertained that the staff wants Bud at 205, not 215, I think we are once again talking apples and oranges.

Now it seems, to me anyway, that Bud might be more about PlanB if we don't get Berry...and Hyde, therefore, is still in a class by himself. Big, but fast and more like Beannie-Ball.

You miss the keywords in my post which was "get by" by not recruiting a QB this year. I am in total agreement with what you said about bringing in 2 QB's in the same class. It would be a extremely difficult to get two quality guys in the same class. I would think if they can get a quality QB this year they should take him because as you said that as the one position that makes the difference.

Just a little update from the recent verbals and talk after the spring game...

Just a hunch but some other kids might start to take note of what we are putting together, we have the so called recruiting momentum right now...We haven't even reached summer camp...Usually we are talking about evaluating guys on the cusp of being part of the class and getting an offer at camp...This year we are trying to figure out when the national level recruits are going to commit...Think all the recruits we are pulling in could help with say a Corey Adams, Big time Qb recruit, Fellows, Telfort, etc...

The room in this class is filling up quick, and some guys are going to have to start pulling the trigger or their spot might be gone...

Not much talk about Jackson and his visit this weekend...Still curious about Golden and Hyde now that Hall is in the class and Berry looks to be the top RB on the board...Hall could play elsewhere tho...Then it takes away form someone else...

I think we might see a couple more Florida guys pop up still with that other guys talking to them...

We are just loading up and it is fun to witness...:osu:

I think about that with Fellows. I know Zook is selling resurgence hard. But right now Illinois has only two other commits and both are from Chicago (albeit quality players). Is that the class Fellows wants to leave Ohio to become part of?

Not sure if this is the correct verbage of how to ask what I am asking here, but is this a good way of separating the 4 and 5* talent that wants to win a championship or 3, from the guys who want to be their own man somewhere else? I mean, at this point, do we lose guys because we have too much talent, or do we get guys because they want to be part of something special? Do we miss the guys we can't sign? IMHO, no we don't. Something beautiful is happening here.

It looks like we are starting to get a really clear view of what 80-90% of the class is going to look like. I've never seen so many commits and almost commits this early. Not a ton of intrigue left except for maybe the last 4-5 spots.

I think the thing that is hardest to really get a grasp on is the impact of Terrelle Pryor on the recruiting priorities. There is little doubt that he will likely be the starter in 2009 and there can be little doubt that the offense we run with him will look very different from the one we are running with Boeckman. Where it gets interesting for recruiting purposes is in trying to determine needs when we as fans aren't sure what the standard formation is going to look like. For example, with Nicol and B. Smith graduating this year and Ballard in his last year in 2009, we are very thin at TE with only DiLillo there. But, if we go with a bit of a spread (pistol formation?), how much are we going to use the TE? Looking at the current roster and OSU's heavy use of 1 and even 2 TE sets, it would look to be a no-brainer that we need 1 and maybe 2. But, who knows how we are going to use the TE in the future?

Also, are we going to use guys like Jordan Hall and Lamaar Thomas as hybrid RB/WR like Percy Harvin and Noel Devine? What does the "pony" formation end up looking like with Pryor at QB? With a 240 pound QB who can fly is a short yardage type back like Hyde really a big need or can TP, Homan, and Saine pretty much handle those duties? If we go to a spread offense that uses the FB as more of a weapon (like WVU with Owen Schmidt) and let him touch the ball 10 times a game, might it make sense to give a great athlete like Storm Klein a shot there?

Notice a trend that isn't unusual but seems to run high in this class...winners. It occured to me after we got Hall that these guys we are getting are winners. Muldoon from X (state champs), J. Hall with Pryor from Jeanette (state champs), Homan with Coldwater (state champs), Hall and Newsome from Glenville (always are playoff caliber), Simon from Mooney (state runner ups), Whiting(KY state champs I believe?), and Storm Klein from Licking Valley (state runner up). Not sure on the FL guys but these are all players who know what it takes to win, on top of being superb athletes.

Here is my updated list...I had to squeeze some people out (Tank Carradine, James Jackson, Reid Fragel, Carlos Hyde, Corey Brown, etc.) to get the number down to 25:

Bold = Offered
Bold and Red = Verbal

RB - Jamaal Berry
RB - Jordan Hall
FB - Zach Boren
FB - Adam Homan (could play LEO or TE)
WR - Duron Carter
WR - Chris Fields
OL - Jack Mewhort
OL - Marcus Hall
OL - Corey Linsley
OL - Chris Watt
DE - Melvin Fellows
DE - Jonathan Newsome
DT - John Simon
DT - Pat Muldoon
LB - Jordan Whiting
LB - Storm Klein
LB - Dorian Bell
CB - Darrell Givens
CB - Brandon McGee
CB - C.J. Barnett
S - Vlad Emilien
S - Jamie Wood
S - D.J. Hunter
ATH - Victor Marc
ATH - E.J. Banks

I know the odds are against Victor Marc, but I am just going out on a limb and saying he gets an offer and accepts on the spot. Everyone else on the list has been offered. No QB in this class, unless Marc ends up there eventually, and if not I am still okay with not taking a QB this year. No TE is an issue, but there is a chance Homan could end up there...and there are some great options in-state in 2010. Offering Fragel is not out of the question but that means someone else gets bumped. Of those offered, I am most confident about Emilien, McGee, Hall, Newsome, Muldoon and Boren.

If there is a better class than that in the country I would like to see it...
