CBF40'S Look at '09 recruiting

Are you not counting Justin as a freebie, or are you just saying the number for OL is likely fixed regardless of schollies?

Yeah I have Justin as a freebie, but I am of the opinion that his brother might not of been in this class if not for Justin, so that schollie has to come from somewhere and I think that since Justin is an oline and will play that it might come from the 4 that Bollman has said that he wanted...

I think he has a higher ceiling as an OL...OSU is probably going to be in the market for more of a "field-stretching TE" rather than another Nicol or Ballard (your more traditional OSU TE). Just my take on how things seem to be panning out. Not saying Fragel won't be offered, but going by the law of averages [that far fewer kids get offered by OSU than don't] I don't see it happening...

Here is an interesting option:

What about Terence Davis. Yeah he's a WR. After looking at his tape he looks much bigger than 6'5 205, and if he is really 205 at that size he could easily grow into a TE and become that field stretching TE, baring any harmful setbacks.

QB - 1 Who I don't know...Morgan Newton is a name that has been thrown around recently for an offer...Maybe Victor Marc if they eventually see him as a QB...Some might say we don't need a QB, but Pryor has the chance to be a 3 year player and even if he was 4 year player, a qb that comes in and redshirts gets two years of seperation from Pryor...No way we can wait till next year or we could be having a qb starting in his redshirt freshmen season and that is not ideal...

RB - 2 The names being thrown around are Hall, Hyde, Berry, and Golden...This is one that is a little hard to sort out...Hyde said he wanted one offer his dream offer...He got it and we havent heard much from him...Berry is the top on the board IMO...Hall could play RB/DB/WR...and Golden was the early choice it looked like, then fell off a little bit and now was at the spring game...

FB - 2 Boren and Homan will be the two...

TE - 1-2...I think with the other positions filling up we only take 1...I think the two from Michigan are the two getting strong looks now...Losing Nicol and Smith only leaves us with Ballard...We need at least one...

WR - 2-3 We already have Fields in the fold, which allows us to be pretty selective but I think that the staff really wants Jackson as the 2nd receiver...We may not need a third, but it looks at this point like Carter is going to be part of the class...Lots of other names from Florida being thrown around or the two from Illinois, but we can only take so many...

OL -4 Bollman said to one of the recruits that he wanted 4 in this class...To me the top 4 high school guys are Mewhort, Hall, Linsley, and Watt...Then you throw in the wild card of Boren...Will he count in that number or will they take those 4 guys I listed above...Think the lead it seemed we had for Watt might be slipping a little bit...Still think Shrive and Nixon are long shots...

DL - 4-5 Pretty solid year for Ohio one the dline...Simon is in already, Think Fellows will be in sometime in the spring, then we have offers to Muldoon, Newsome, and Adams...And Carradine with a GPA and test score raise should receive an offer...It will depend on how the rest of the positions play out I think to determine how many guys we bring in...The ideal for me would Fellows, Simon, Adams, Carradine with Newsome at the Leo...But Muldoon has an offer and we are heavy leaders...There is no way I see us taking 6 guys, so I think right now Carradine is on the outside looking in unless we don't get one of the guys above...

LB 3 - Think we are done here...Klein, Whiting, and Bell make a great Trio...

DB 6 - Now this is where it get really interesting...We now have Wood, Barnett, and Givens...I still think the number is 6...Too many guys on the board...We have Hunter, Vlad, McGee, and Banks as the main guys looking like we have a great shot at them...That makes 7 so who gets left out, and what if Brown gets an offer or Telfort wants in?

So adding those numbers up...1, 2, 2, 1, 2, 4, 4, 3, 6 makes an even 25...This is only taking 4 DL's and 2 WR's which at this point I am not sure about...SO where would we lose a ship from...Maybe oline if we take Justin Boren and only go with 3...I kept saying 23/24, but it looks like we might be taking a full class of 25 with all the offers and guys still on the board...

Here is my newest guess at our class...

QB - Not sure, maybe Newton, Marc or someone else...
RB - Jordan Hall (Very Soon???) (Top 100 talent)
RB - Jamaal Berry (Top 30 talent, 5 star)
FB - Zach Boren (Summer time??)
FB - Adam Homan
TE - Reid Fragel (Does he get an offer??)
WR - Chris Fields (Top 100 talent)
WR - James Jackson (Leader??) (Top 100 talent)
WR - Duron Carter (things looking good here)
OL - Jack Mewhort (Top 100 talent)
OL - Marcus Hall (Heavy Leader) (Top 30 talent, 5 star)
OL - Cory Linsley (Summer time??)
OL - Justin Boren (Transfer, Soon??) (All big ten talent)
DE - Melvin Fellows (In a month??) (Top 100 talent)
DE - Jonathon Newsome (Heavy Leader)
DT - John Simon (Top 30 talent, 5 star)
DT - Pat Muldoon (Heavy leader)
LB - Jordan Whiting (Top 100 talent)
LB - Storm Klein (Top 100 talent)
LB - Dorian Bell (Very soon??) (Top 20 talent, 5 star)
DB - Darrell Givens (Top 100 talent)
DB - CJ Barnett (Top 100 talent)
DB - Jamie Wood (Top 100 talent)
DB - DJ Hunter (co leader with Indiana)
DB - Brandon McGee (Leaders??) (Top 100 talent)
DB - Vlad the Impaler (Soon??)

I have 14 guys on this list as Top 100 talent...I am sure that all of them won't be on the same list, but I think those 14 will all make some list for top 100 and the guys that I don't have as top 100, will be fixtures in the top 250 lists...

I would put money on us landing 20/21 of these guys on this list...All have offers other than Fragel, and a QB...

I did leave guys like Watt, Banks, Adams, Carradine, Telfort, (group of 3 florida receivers that could get offers), Hyde, etc. off the list...We just can't take them all...

Wonder about Special team i.e. punters and kicker.
I know we got Buchanon in 2008. do we anticipate him in a multirole as punter and kicker.
I see Pretorius is a senior, as is Trapasso, Pettrey and back up punter Thoma are juniors. Other than Buchanon we are empty in special team scholarship athletes.
Any chance we save a scholie for a punter or kicker who pops up this year?

good stuff CBF40...

...and I agree with your take on the OL. I think with Boren (hopefully) coming aboard, that means that only 3 HS OL get in this year. Boren + Mewhort + 2 more out of Hall, Linsley, Watt and whoever would give the Bucks 13 total OL for 2009, 11 of which would be juniors or younger. Both numbers seem to be in line with what Bollman likes to do. I'd REALLY like for there to be room for Watt, assuming he wants to come aboard...and I think the Bucks would make room for him somehow...but given how many other guys seem to be headed to OSU and the needs at other positions...things are much tighter than they appear. Good problem to have...I think!

I have been thinking about that...But I think that Buchanon will take over the punting duties, then we have Pettrey to do the kicking duties in 09 and we look for a kicker in 09, unless we take a preferred walk-on this year...

Based upon the guys interested and what I saw at the spring game yesterday, I think the Buckeyes should pass on a QB this year. I would rather make room for a very good DB like EJ Banks. Bauserman looked very good in the game yesterday meaning the Bucks will have Pryor, Bauserman and Henton through at least the 2010 season. More likely a couple are here all the way through 2011.

The great thing about passing on a position in a recruiting year is how it opens the eyes of super prospects in the following class. For example, we didn't take any QBs in 2007 and I think that played a large role in being able to get Pryor in 2008. I would hold off on QB this year and then get a big national guy in 2010 selling them on having at least 2 years of separation from TP.

I hear what you are saying, and Bauserman will be here thru the 11' season now that I think about it, but there is no reason why we can't bring in super QB recruits year after year...And I don't like the idea of having a QB start in their sophomore year...It held us back in the 04 season with Zwick and Smith...

Well, if there was a super, national guy who was interested, I wouldn't turn him away, but there isn't. I would also argue that Pryor is arguably the most hyped QB in history so it may be even harder. My point is that I wouldn't reach to take a mediocre QB this year when we don't have a huge need and there are potentially great players at other positions (I wouldn't take a QB and then turn away Corey Adams or EJ Banks, for example).

Also, Smith and Zwick were in their 3rd years here. That should be plenty of time to learn the system. With Zwick, I think it wasn't a matter of being rushed into the position, he just never had the mechanics, even as a 5th year senior. The way OSU is recruiting, they should be able to bring in a national top 5 QB guy next year. He will then have a couple years to learn behind Pryor and Bauserman and then should be ready to step in as a redshirt soph.

I think we could get by without recruiting a QB for 09 but then you would have to get 2 QB's in 2010. You do not want to be stuck with only having to QB's on your roster in 2011 because if you only take one in 2010 the other QB on your roster would be a true freshman and that is not good if Bauserman would get hurt.
