CBF40'S Look at '09 recruiting

Only slight disagreement I have with that list is I think we get James Jackson...we are all over him and I don't see us not taking him in any scenario. Plus I think we lead for him right now. Of course that could change...I also might venture to say we get Corey Adams. In any event I would take that class in a heartbeat.

So many of these kids want "in" right now...it's going to be tough to call who gets left out.

It really may come down to a "first come, first serve" type deal for some of these guys. Of course a few players will get spots held for them....but I can see others on this list fighting for remaining spots.

Here is my updated list...I had to squeeze some people out (Tank Carradine, James Jackson, Reid Fragel, Carlos Hyde, Corey Brown, etc.) to get the number down to 25:

Bold = Offered
Bold and Red = Verbal

RB - Jamaal Berry
RB - Jordan Hall
FB - Zach Boren
FB - Adam Homan (could play LEO or TE)
WR - Duron Carter
WR - Chris Fields
OL - Jack Mewhort
OL - Marcus Hall
OL - Corey Linsley
OL - Chris Watt
DE - Melvin Fellows
DE - Jonathan Newsome
DT - John Simon
DT - Pat Muldoon
LB - Jordan Whiting
LB - Storm Klein
LB - Dorian Bell
CB - Darrell Givens
CB - Brandon McGee
CB - C.J. Barnett
S - Vlad Emilien
S - Jamie Wood
S - D.J. Hunter
ATH - Victor Marc
ATH - E.J. Banks

I know the odds are against Victor Marc, but I am just going out on a limb and saying he gets an offer and accepts on the spot. Everyone else on the list has been offered. No QB in this class, unless Marc ends up there eventually, and if not I am still okay with not taking a QB this year. No TE is an issue, but there is a chance Homan could end up there...and there are some great options in-state in 2010. Offering Fragel is not out of the question but that means someone else gets bumped. Of those offered, I am most confident about Emilien, McGee, Hall, Newsome, Muldoon and Boren.

If there is a better class than that in the country I would like to see it...

I am feeling the same thing on Marc, but where does he play...Do they want to take a guy they are not sure where they are going to play him...right now it looks like maybe a first come first serve between Mcgee, Vlad, Hunter, and Banks...I think we only take 3...

like i have mentioned as well, don't see us passing on a TE or QB...So that leaves out Marc unless they think he can play QB for us...

If Adams wants in i think Muldoon gets left out...If i were him i would try and jump on board before getting left behind...

Think we might start to see some get slowed on a little bit...

I agree...the only one I see us saving a spot for regardless is McGee. However, I would hate to not have room for those 4 if they want to come.

With 2 talented Freshmen and 1 talented Sophomore QB, I don't think that QB will be a priority. McGee and Hunter are the two that I like the most out of that group, but getting McGee almost certainly means getting Vlad as well. And it's tough to slow play a guy like EJ Banks....he's Joey's cousin after all. Right now I think all four are going to be in, with a guy like Banks having a shot at WR.

Someone who is more versed in the scholarship/recruiting rules please answer this.

I was under the impression that if you had an early enrollee that they didn't count toward the scholarship limit for the current year. Why I'm inquiring is because I'm trying to make a way for more than 25 to be part of this class :)......

I am going to throw a name out at DB that could pop up....

Florida Safety Jonathan Scott... brother of current Buckeye CB James Scott. He is 6'3" 190 with big time offers from Auburn, Florida State and LSU.

ESPN - College Football Recruiting Briefing Room 2009

Safety Jonathan Scott cools off on the Seminoles
Jonathan Scott is no longer high on his original favorite, Florida State, ESPN affiliate TheBigSpur.com reports.
He said, "They've got other guys at my position committed already," referring to safeties Gerald Demps (Valdosta, Ga./Lowndes) and Jajuan Harley (Tallahassee, Fla./James S. Rickards).
The change places other programs that have offered such as South Carolina, LSU, Michigan, Auburn, Kentucky and Central Florida in the mix for his services.
Scott also mentioned what he's looking for in a school, "Academics would have to be No. 1. After that, it's probably location. I don't want to go too far from home and I don't want to be freezing like my brother (Class of 2007 Ohio State signee James Scott) is."

WADC45 ... hasn't Chris Fields committed, you should change him to red in your post (i changed him in the quote above)

also I think one of those lineman (Linsley or Watt) will get dropped in our priorities
with the addition of Boran, even though he doesn't take up a scholarship, we could use that extra scholy on a TE or somewhere else
I believe we offered Mewhort way too soon as i think we could have got Shrive instead (this is a mute point though)

I would also love to see Corey Adams want in soon, before Muldoon commits, but that might be a little greedy

I am certainly not an expert when it comes to all of the recruiting rules like some of the other guys but the only way you could get more than 25 in a class is by doing what they did with TB when he did not go on scholarship until Winter quarter (Grey shirting). I am not exactly sure when that cut off date is to be able to Grey shirt. Early enrollees are just a means for a kid getting used to the college environment early and being able to participate in Spring drills.

An early enrollee would count against the '08 class, however you still have the 85 scholarship limit which you would run into with a class that large(barring several defections).

That's the way I understand it...an early enrolle counts against the 85 total and 25 for the previous year...

So...

Let's see here. Hypothetically, say we have 29 open spots this year to give out 29 scholarships for this 2009. Since you cannot "sign" more than 25 in any given class, and we really want 29 we need to have 4 enroll early to count against the 2008 class if we want all 29 to be able to play that year... as long as we had 21 or less in the previous 2008 class so we don't exceed the 25 limit from the year before (correct? or does that not make a difference?). If we had, say, 23 in the 2008 class, we would only have the ability to bring in 27 kids that can play. However, if we want 29 kids, 2 of them could enroll early and 2 of them would have to grayshirt or, as the SEC teams call it, be "sign and place" kids where they sign and then go to pre school for a year to get their grades up for admission standards.
