On his role on the defense

"I didn't expect to see this much action so soon. I really thought it would be more on special teams than anything, but I guess the coaches have liked how I fit in. I really think I can help our defense out."

On the mindset of the defense

"We don't let up at all defensively. We're going to take every game seriously and use each game to improve and work on our game. If we play like we're supposed to, we'll win games."

On his role in the nickel defense

"It's been a great opportunity for me to come in and contribute like I have. I remember the coaches talking about running a few different looks out there and that I was involved in some of them. I just have to keep my head down and keep working on my game."

Great article - including the snippets from Tressel's Press Conference.

The moral of the story is that the Buckeye staff, when recruiting, believes their own gut and eyes over any set of Boiler-Room film evaluators and ranking makers.

The results are on the field.

Eyes on Ohio State's Chekwa Defensive back goes from largely unnoticed to Big Ten conference Player of the Week
By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Wednesday, Oct 10, 2007
Ohio State Buckeyes defensive back Chimdi Chekwa largely went unnoticed by college scouts, primarily because they had trouble finding his school in Clermont, Fla.
It wasn't until Notre Dame came to see wide receiver Richard Jackson that other colleges started to pay attention to the school's other players. Even then, Chekwa expected to attend an area school, such as the University of Central Florida.
''When (OSU) coach Darrell Hazell came down to talk to me, I didn't take it that seriously,'' Chekwa said. ''I just thought it was another stop. Then they gave me an offer. It really came all at once.''

Ohio State Buckeyes' Chimdi Chekwa named Big Ten defensive player of the week

Wednesday, October 10, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Two years ago, Chimdi Chekwa was a defensive back at a Florida high school some scouts couldn't find, with feet that turned out and messed with his running, a 40 time misreported by a Web site that made him look slow, and a first and last name that people couldn't pronounce.
It's Chim-dee Chek-wa, by the way, not the Chim-i-dee or Cheek-wa he still sometimes hears. Figure it might be nice to know how to say the name of the Big Ten defensive player of the week.

Chekwa, please, OSU says
Jim Naveau | [email protected]
- 10.11.2007
COLUMBUS ? His parents gave him a hard-to-forget name. But it wasn?t until last Saturday that most Ohio State football fans could remember it.
Redshirt freshman Chimdi Chekwa was named the Big Ten?s defensive player of the week after having 10 tackles when OSU?s defense grabbed hold of Purdue?s offense and wouldn?t let go in a 23-7 win.
Not bad for a guy who comes off the bench most of the time and wasn?t highly recruited as a high school player in Clermont, Fla., near Orlando.
His high school teammate Richard Jackson, a receiver who eventually signed with Notre Dame, drew the recruiters to their high school. But when Ohio State?s assistant coaches got there, Chekwa?s coach made a pitch to look at him too.
?Their coach kept saying, ?Hey, the best guy is this guy (Chekwa),? ? Tressel said.
Ohio State did look at Chekwa, decided the coach?s praise was warranted and offered him a scholarship.

Chimdi Chekwa gives Buckeyes checkmate JASON LLOYD, Morning Journal Writer
10/11/2007

COLUMBUS -- The best birthday present for Chimdi Chekwa would double as a return trip home.

To New Orleans, where he hasn't been since Hurricane Katrina destroyed his hometown.

His father's new job took Chekwa to Clermont, Fla., in 2002, well before the hurricane ravaged the city. Chekwa grew up in the West Bank of New Orleans, one of the few areas that escaped the severe flooding.

Chekwa hasn't been back since, but if Ohio State returns to the national championship game, that could all change. The national title game this year is the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

[sarcasm/] We should call him Chewey (like Chewbacca) and every time he makes a tackle, play the Chewbacca growl over the stadium PA. If he keeps making tackles, it could probably rival the Penn State lion roar. [end sarcasm\]
