Football Buckeyes Lace Up Track Spikes for 2007 Jesse Owens Classic

Relay events to feature football players Saturday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium

...

Last week at the Drake Relays, three Ohio State football players made their track debuts in the 4x100-meter relay. Freshman defensive back Chimdi Chekwa (Chim-dee Cheek-wah), junior All-Big Ten cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and sophomore wide receiver Dan Potokar joined All-Big Ten sprinter Anthony Cole in setting a season-best in the event at 41.57. The unit will look to improve that mark at approximately 4 p.m. Saturday.

Chekwa, from Clermont, Fla., was an all-state sprinter at East Ridge High School.

I also thought he played a great game. I had only one concern about him and the other young DB's, that being that they all seemed to be giving an extra yard on all their stops. I think just because they need to put on some weight in order to make a clean, knock em back hit. Other than that He impressed me

Jenkins made a couple mistakes at safety and IMO its because he is used to playing corner. A few more games and this secondary is gonna be scary. Scott has looked good on special teams and in limited playing time. Chekwa gives us three CB's that are very good.

Agreed, a two-star by scout. People should post a link to his rivals recruiting bio everytime someone gets all worried about an offer to a kid who's not 4.4(Chimdi is listed at 4.67). These times show a lot more, all being school records, the 100 (10.79 seconds), the 200 (22.2 seconds) and 300 hurdles (38.7 seconds). Also how could you not love a corner with the nickname Checkmate

I'm not completely sold on Chimdi's play.

There was a fade tossed his way that should have been caught - Chimdi was caught looking the wrong direction, back to the ball, arms in the air. I thought it was a definite PI call.

I didn't see much of him after that one play.

I watched the game again last night and I agree with half of your point. But I think Chimdi will be able to find the ball in that situation with more experience.

As for PI... Not even the Husky fans were calling for it. Definitely not PI.

I thought he played very tight , which I love, and still not get a PI called. Now that is a special talent. And you are right , with coaching and experience he will start finding the ball.

Add another vote for me - Chekwa looked extremely good against the Dawgs.

How does tOSU find these diamond-in-the-rough cornerbacks so consistently? We always seem to have some of the top cover corners in the US, and many of them have been unheralded coming out of high school. Amazing.

Actually this is the first time since JT has been here that I thought we had three or even two legitimate corners. First year we had Cie Grant playing boundary. Then we had Fox and Everett. Both did well in the scheme of playing the boundary, but neither were even close to being considered lock down. Last year we had a walk-on that did a great job at the boundary, but, again, no more than one corner that you could rely on consistently in man coverage. I'm really going to enjoy watching Washington and Chekwa over the next few years to see what this D can do with mulitiple talented cover guys.

I would think a lot of that has to do with the staff's desire to foster a family atmosphere and encouraging former players to come back. As far as I know, the WHAC is still "open" to past players for off season conditioning.

Having opportunities to lift and go through summer work outs with Springs, Winfield, etc, plus learning against our own WR corp, including past WRs that are known to return to Columbus often, like Galloway, certainly can't hurt.

That production of both elite WRs and elite DBs, I think, is intertwined. That daily competition makes everybody better.

I think Tressel's background as a 1-AA coach is a big reason why OSU is so good at finding under the radar players.

 Our highest ranked high school corner never even saw the field on defense. In JT I trust.
