COLUMBUS First, it was the unique name that drew people's attention. Now it's his game.

Chimdi Chekwa is happy being an important although somewhat anonymous part of No. 3 Ohio State's stingy defensive unit. But he is proud of his Nigerian name and wants people to at least know how to pronounce it.

"A lot of people like to say 'Chim-i-dee.' It's 'CHEEK-wuh' all the time, for some reason. For some reason they want to say 'cheek' instead of 'check' and put that extra 'e' in there," the redshirt freshman nickelback said during preparations for Saturday's game against Kent State.

Chimdi Chekwa had a breakout game against Purdue, helping the Buckeyes contain Greg Orton and the other Boilermakers receivers.

As Chimdi Chekwa sat down to meet the media the other day, the soft-spoken Ohio State cornerback first wanted to set the record straight on two things he considers important: his first name, and his last. He said he has heard variations on Chimdi -- "A lot of people like to say Chim-i-di, putting an extra 'i' in there," he said. As for Chekwa, "for some reason they want to say 'cheek' instead of 'check.' "

Great read. That Clermont area is pretty new and growing. My girlfriends family lives around there, Groveland. Houses and schools are sprouting up everywhere. It has to be tough to find a kid in a new school if they don't go to summer camps.

Considering he was picked on by opposing offenses the most he held up pretty well. Illinois game was his worse but the defense as a whole had a bad day that game. He needs to put on more muscle.

More body mass will enable him to be more physical with receivers. That looks like his weakness to me. He has plenty of speed and toughness.
His thinness means he gets pushed around by bigger receivers. And has more trouble because of his lack of size.
