Cavs 2010-11 season (official thread)

Seriously, some folks will complain about winning the fucking lottery because now they have to pay more taxes.

Even if there are no "superstars" available in this draft, we still can be be way ahead of the rest of the teams by picking the best players to fill our needs, and with the #1 and #4 picks, that shouldn't be hard to do. I'd much rather have the #1 and #4 picks in a so-so draft than the #30 pick in a so-so draft...

God bless you Sir, that started my with a laugh. We also have a high second round pick this year. Every so often you can get lucky, Boozer, Mo Williams, Rodman, Millsaps in Uath...

When the Cavs drafted Daugherty, Harper and Price, Harper was the only one who showed anything as a rookie. By the second year we started looking like a great young team. We should be in the lottery next year as well.

Beyond that, we should be beating Lebron's, talented, homebody's ass all the time.

That was the big problem with building around LeBron. He was too good too fast and we just didn't have another high pick. OKC is a perfect example. Durant's first year they still sucked and allowed them to pick his Pippen type player in Westbrook.

This year there is no super star. So the Cavs have to pick their Pippen type players in this draft. TWO top 4 picks just gives the Cavs room for error.

I just hope we don't get too good too fast, which is why I really hope the Lockout takes out all of the season (or like 3/4ths of it) so the Cavs just are too young to improve throughout the year so we have a Top 3/5 pick next year and hope we can get our stud next year.

What a great night!!! But having #1 and #4 can allow someone to think outside the box.

Is it best to pick the two best players... or, think outside the box and pick the combination of the two best players to make the Cavs the best team possible.

Irving and then whoever they pick at #4 may not be the best combo of players.

I may be one of the few people that think this, but I feel Derrick Williams is the special player in this draft. If he could fall to #4, I would say yeah, you pick Irving & Williams and be happy. But that ain't happening. So, my question is Irving & Kanter/Liggins/Vessey/Bismack/etc better than this combo.... Derrick Williams & Brandon Knight?

Yes, you pick Derrick Williams #1 and then with #4 you pick your PG of the future in Knight.

I'm thinking along those same lines without really seeing Irving, Walker, or Knight play much/at all. If Williams and Irving are seen as the same class of player I like him combined with Walker or Knight better than Irving and a PF/C that the Cavs already have a bunch of. Right now it looks like there are 3 PG's in the top 6 picks and only one SF, which is the Cavs biggest hole to fill. On the other hand if Scott and Grant think that Irving is the second coming of Chris Paul and much better than Walker or Knight then go with him and take the next best player with the 4.
My question with Knight is how does his ceiling compare to Irving's? If he could be as productive of a player, but needs some extra time to develop I would lean to him since the Cavs can afford to wait a year or two for the PG to develop. Just hold onto Davis and Sessions for next season. Knight looks to have the best size of the 3 PG's.

My biggest concern right now is with Dan Gilbert wanting to win as soon as possible. That's not in the best interests of this franchise. Trading for Rip Hamilton or a Rudy Gay is counterproductive to what should be this team's long-term goals: build through the draft, slowly.

Get two solid starters and contributors on a championship-calibar team. Pick high again next year. That's all I'm asking for...

Next years draft should be much deeper with the normal amount of one and doners coming out along with the surprising number of freshman that are staying this year. I don't know if it will rival 2003, but it should be up there. Right now the top of the draft looks deep with SF/PF types, but I'm sure that will change after they play another NCAA season.

BTW if the Wolves really want Irving I'd be willing to trade them the #1 pick for both of their first rounders (2 and 20).

I think the Hamilton move was to buy another first round pick for next year IIRC so I would have no problem with that. From the quote a few posts back Gilbert didn't care that Hamilton didn't want to play for the Cavs so they might have ended up buying him out.
I would have no problem with a trade for Gay as long as they don't give up either of the picks this year. If the Grizz would want to make that deal for a top 5 protected pick next year or any player from the current roster not named JJ I would do it. Just hope the lockout is long and the Cavs can play bad enough for whatever amount of season they have and still get a top 5 pick next year. Irving, Gay, Kanter, JJ, and a top 5 pick next year would be a good young base to build around.

This!

The 2011 draft for the Cavs is one to build for the future. Ownership and coaches KNOW the Cavs are a WIP and have 4 picks in the draft this year. This draft does NOT have any noticable superstars in it, BUT has alot of very good players available. Looking at the 2012 draft and who should be available will influence who the Cavs pick this year. This is how I hope it plays out for the Cavs:

1 (1) - Kyrie Irving, PG, Duke. As it stands right now for the 2012 draft, it shows Teague (Kentucky recruit) as a possible draft entry that might warrant a top 10 pick as a PG. Other than that, not many PGs available. Get a guy that can distribute and score. Irving can do this.

1(4) - Enes Kanter, F/C, Kentucky. Versatile big man to be added to a thin front court. Would be a nice complement to Andy and J.J.

2(32) - Marshon Brooks, SG, Providence. The Cavs need some help on the wing and Brooks would be a nice pick up here. Excellent range and decent handles. (Would love for Kenneth Faried, Morehead State to drop to this pick. If anyone saw him play against the Buckeyes or in the tournament, you would know why; kid is a Rodman type rebounder and defender BUT can score without the drama).

2 (54) - DeAndre Liggins, G/F, Kentucky OR Jamie Skeen, PF, VCU. We all saw what kind of player Liggins was in the tournament. Tenacious defender that can defend at least three positions on the floor with the ability to bury the "3". Great pick at this point in the draft. Skeen is a physical post player that can play with his back to the basket or can step out and hit the 15 -18 foot jumper PLUS has a good pedigree coming from VCU and Coach Smart. Liggins would be the preferred pick here IF available.

The Cavs are blessed with Gilbert as an owner. He's smart, he'll will do what ever it takes, and he wants to win it all. He should let this year's draft picks develop, and send his kid back for another lottery pick next year. Then take out his wallet to fill in the "Nate Thurmond, Larry Nance" type players to go for the gusto.

we know chris grant can make great trades but can he draft? this is where we find out...i think the thing to remember about this draft and future drafts, is you cant build your entire team in a single draft no matter how many picks you have....it makes sense to take Williams because we are so thin at SF but we dont have to pick the SF of the cavs future if we can get our PG of the future and the player that is best overall according to most scouts....this year you take Irving and the next best player available...if that is kemba walker you take it...worry about C and F in the 2nd round...next year when we have another lottery pick, 2 1st round picks i believe, then we go for the C or F for the future

Anytime you can get the best PG and C in a draft, you take it and lay
your foundation for the future. Irving is that PG. Kanter or Jonas Valsisisdisisbshsb is that C. If Williams would happen to be there at 4, then you take him.

There's been word that Gilbert is also trying to buy into the lottery to get another top 15 pick.

You use your two second rounders and hope one of them hits. He doesn't need to be a stud, just a solid contributer.

Another upside of taking one of the Euro bigs is that Jonas V would most likely stay in Euro for another season to work on his game. Kanter would come but still needs to work on his game, ensuring another decent lottery pick in a very good draft next year.

Regardless of the strenght of this draft, getting #'s 1 and 4 is never a bad thing.
