Cavs 2010-11 season (official thread)

Cavs discuss deal for ?Cats? Wallace

The Charlotte Bobcats have discussed a trade to send forward Gerald Wallace(notes) to the Cleveland Cavaliers, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.
The Cavaliers would use their trade exception to acquire Wallace, but have also pushed for a lottery-protected first-round pick for them to take on the two years and $22 million left on Wallace?s contract through the 2012-13 season, the source said.
No deal is imminent, and the Cavaliers have until July 10 to use the $14.5 million trade exception created from the sign-and-trade with the Miami Heat for LeBron James(notes). If the NBA and Players Association haven?t reached a new collective bargaining agreement by the end of June, the Cavs would run the risk of having the trade exception expire during the lockout.
The Cavaliers are in freefall, with an 11-game losing streak and an NBA-worst 8-30 record. They have had numerous discussions about absorbing a player into the exception, but are strongly considering the proposed Wallace deal.
The Bobcats have been shopping Wallace for several weeks and discussed packaging him in deals to several teams. Charlotte has struggled to a 15-21 record, and replaced Larry Brown with interim coach Paul Silas last month. Facing significant financial losses this season, Bobcats owner Michael Jordan has targeted his highest-paid player as a way to trim payroll.
Wallace?s performance has sagged this season; he?s averaging 16.4 points and 8.1 rebounds. Still, Charlotte has won four straight games, including a victory over the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday, and holds the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

i dont understand this at all unless we are planning on flipping wallace for players or draft picks later on...and i wouldnt do this deal unless we get the protected first round draft pick also...wallace is 29 years old, super injury prone and someone who we should of been targeting 3 years ago when we still had lebron...it hasnt been a secret that charlotte would of unloaded wallace for the right price...getting wallace might win us a few more games but that also decreases our chances of losing the #1 overall pick in the draft...i hope this deal doesnt go thru...theres not one player on the cavs right now playing with any heart, so why does chris grant believe wallace will? so far chris grant hasnt made any huge mistakes but he also hasnt made any good moves either

they are using the TPE to get a 1st round pick and flip wallace later. it's about as good of a move as they can make. there are several teams with a TPE right now, and being the facilitator in the carmello deal seems dead since melo won't agree to sign an extension with NJ.

The real question is that if the Bobcats' pick is lottery protected, and the Bobcats currently stand at #15 right now, if they miss the 8th seed by a few games and end up with pick #14, if they can waive the protection.

not sure on the rules of the draft pick and its about impossible to find anything that would tell otherwise...thats why i wish the plain dealer still had windhorst on their staff...mary shmitt boyer sucks with her coverage...and as long as we are just using our TPE to get wallace and hopefully a draft pick in the 1st round with the mindset of trading him later then i like the deal...otherwise i dont

it's actually a perfect situation for wallace to put up some pretty big hollow stats and improve his stock to the point that cleveland can dump him to a contender for young talent and more picks.

Hell it seems Jamison has been putting up 30 points most nights. I'm cool as long as they still get the most ping pong balls in June.

ya i agree with this...my only concern is how injury prone he is which could hurt his stock...like with verajo, a team isnt going to call you if your out for the year so it is a semi-gamble...but one i would deffinitly be willing to take as long as its just our TPE we are using to get him and a draft pick...then if we can get rid of jamison and mo or parker or anyone but gibson and maybe hickson, then that is a good first year for us in rebuilding mode

the deal for Wallace hinges on the draft pick...living in Charlotte, they think this deal would be awful b/c they get no talent in return and lose a first round pick. But MJ is all about cost savings (letting Tyson Chandler walk for nothing was ridiculous).

And as bad as the draft is being reported to be...an additional pick in the #15-18 range could net you a very good player.

Just imagine a top 3 pick of Irving/Sullinger/Perry Jones....and then getting a guy like Chris Singleton at #16. You'd have 2 instant starters for the next decade assuming the scouting department gets it right.

Next year is slightly better but still enough to land us in the lottery, and all of a sudden we're a very young but ultra-talented team with cap flexibility.

If all goes well the Cavs are competing in 3 years or so...

One last point..keep in mind if they don't use the TPE on anything this year, there is a possibility it expires with the lockout looming. You almost have to hedge your bets and get something for it now or risk losing it all together. If Gerald Wallace and a 1st round pick is what we get for it, I'd be thrilled.

when i first saw this rumor come up, my initial reaction was this is Dan Gilbert going after a star player to put fans in the seats...and i guess you could kill 2 birds with one stone if this trade would go down (i have doubts)...put some more fans in the seats, still not be competitive enough to make the playoffs guaranteeing a lottery pick, and have wallace's expiring contract to trade next year...if i were grant i would not do this trade without that draft pick as well...currently this year we have 3 draft picks, 1 first and 2 2nd round picks...have 4 total with 2 in each round would be awesome...and we still have the other players on the roster to trade as well....but yes i think we have to use this TPE on anything this year also...just get rid of it whenever possible as long as the return is good...windhorst had a good article on the various teams with TPE and he said it is the new "expiring contract" that will come into play with trades this year

anyone know or can provide a link to show what draft picks the Cavs have for the next three years?

these are the extra picks we have along with the obvious first and 2nd rounders...these are all incoming picks and we have no outgoing picks that we owe other teams
