Cavs 09-10 Season (official thread)

Also, I'm going to pretend for a moment that playing Shaq and running the offense through him is about preparing him for Orlando and not about something even more asinine like thinking that he's the best matchup you have or because he needs a certain number of minutes to keep him happy. If it's really about getting him ready, then why isn't he on the floor trying to knock off the rust during garbage time? BTW, the whole "preparing him for Orlando" thing is an insult to a team like Boston, and at the rate the Cavs are going "preparing for Orlando" may as well refer to a golf outing to take place while the Celtics and Magic play in the conference finals.

Agree w/ you fully here. At this poitn in his career, Shaq in finished as a half-court option, especially if you have a superstar like Lebron. Shaq gets rebounds and tip-ins. That's it. If you're running plays for him in the post, you're a fool. And we all know the answer to that regarding Mike Brown.

The Cavs should absolutely start JJ in game 3 with Varajeao but there's a better chance of me hitting the lotto. Let Varajao guard KG and Hickson take Rasheed or Perkins.

We're way better offensively with JJ's mobility and we're better defensively as well. I'd much rather have JJ shadowing Rasheed around the perimeter than Shaq. And I don't even like Shaq in the game when Perkins is pounding underneath. Because it means we feel it necessary to give him touches on the other end.

I don't ever remember a team look this bad and go on to win a championship
This definitely concerns me as "Championship" teams generally tend to compete and play hard every night.

However, this was mentioned at realcavsfans.com and someone brought up a certain 1992 playoff game. I went to check it out and it helped calm some fears...

The 1992 Cavs beat the Chicago Bulls by 26 in Chi-town in game 2 of the Conference Finals (1992 NBA Playoffs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). Jordan's line? 20 points (on 7-22 shooting), 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 6 turnovers.

Next game, back in Cleveland- 36pts-6 rebs-9 ast. Bulls win by 9 and, obviously, went on the win the Championship.

Hopefully the Cavs shake this off and LeBron leads this team to that same path.

I remember after Game 1, Kenny Smith of TNT was talking about how Shaq was making clutch plays in the closing moments of the game. One of those plays in particular was one where he missed a shot and needed two taps to score. I see that and I think to myself that he shot 33% on that play. For Shaq to be effective he needs to shoot over 50% - plus defend, draw fouls and rebound. The only one of those he can really do against the Celtics is draw fouls and even that's questionable if the Celtics don't have to respect his offensive game enough to foul him.

Shaq's ballhandling skills have deserted him as well. He used to have the best hands in the game for a 7-footer. Now it seems like he has Drew Gooden's hands when it comes to catching passes and holding on to rebounds. He was also an excellent passer out of the post, but now once it goes in it doesn't come back out no matter what.

Exactly. Just look at the first quarter of last night's game, in which the entire offense was run through Shaq.

Shaq had a nice give-and-go to Moon last night who dunked it (I think in the second quarter). But in general I agree with what you're saying.

Time for freak-out management for Cavaliers fans: Windhorst Beat Blog | cleveland.com

I've never been a fan of mike brown...i hate his rotations...i hate his in-game coaching...i hate his defensive schemes...and now he is all pissed off AFTER the game at the team when he could of been this pissed during halftime...and calling out mo is ridiculous...yah he had a bad game but he pretty much single handedly pulled us back from a 11 point deficit last game...and i also like how we get a spark when someone threw a beer bottle on the court (i think it was aimed at Mo)...I'm not worried after last nights game i was just more pissed off then anything...boston has shown again they cant hold a lead...and is there any way possible we play that bad again?

The Cavs and Mike Brown have some soul searching to do over the next few days. Lebron needs to get over whatever mental block he has with the elbow and start playing like he did against the Bulls. I personally think if it was causing him a lot of pain we would see it on the floor and I haven't seen any actions that make me think the elbow is a problem. I agree with everyone that we need more JJ and small lineups. Shaq still needs enough minutes to be ready for the Magic, but having Shaq ready for the Magic won't matter if they can't beat the Celtics. It didn't take Mike Brown long to see that there isn't a place for Z in this series so now he needs to realize that Shaq is hurting the team as well. I would play Shaq the first 3 minutes of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters. If he makes a couple shots in one of those runs they might stick with him a little longer.
It almost steamed to me that the Cavs were hungover last night. I think after game 1 they thought all they had to do was show up, keep the game close and then the Celtic would fold at the end of the game. I do think that the Celtics will have trouble closing close games, but the 3rd quarter killed any chance the Cavs had last night. I don't expect the Celtic to have as good of a shooting night as they did last night for the rest of the series, and I hope that the Cavs don't have as poor of a shooting night as they had. The Cavs rely on the 3 to spread the floor so if those don't fall the Celtics can pack the lane and make it very hard on the Cavs. If I were playing the Cavs that's the way I'd play until they shoot well enough to make to extend to the 3 pt line.
In the end I'm hoping this is the wakeup call the Cavs needed to make them show up for 48 minutes every game, because that is what they will need to win 11 more games. I'm still not worried, but if Lebron comes out in game 3 and still isn't playing like Lebron I'll be concerned. Rather than a practice today I would make every player shoot FT's for 2 hours.

Good observation. At several points during the game last night, I couldn't believe how hot the Celtics were from the floor. At the beginning of the second quarter and the entire third quarter, in particular, they couldn't miss.

I think a lot of people are discounting the possibility that the Celtics are a pretty solid, balanced team. They are playing better right now than I remember during their championship run. I'm not sure we can just wake up and beat them.

uhhh.................................... wtf cavs.

LeBron made some awful turnovers, missed some crucial free throws, and didn't even show up for a whole half. He needs to forget about the elbow or we certainly won't win the title. Shaq needs to make a f'ing shot that isn't a dunk. You're 7'3, it's not that hard dude. Lack of hustle and lack of heart was apparent as we got out-rebounded by 11??? Somehow?? Mo Williams needs to make shots, and make good shots not those stupid 1 on 5 shots with a hand in his face.

All I know is that something better change. Quick. Or LeBron and Cleveland is going to miss out on the title again.

I'm not sure that anyone is discounting that the Celtics are a pretty solid, balanced team. I think everyone here is thinking that the Cavs (who, if you recall, had the best record in the NBA this season) have at least as much talent and way more depth than the Celtics, and therefore shouldn't be blown out to the tune of 20 points at home.
