Cavs 07-08 Season Thread

I really like both of these moves...As was stated, anything for Wesley is a plus, and to get a young guy that has some potential is pretty good thing for us...

Also I really like the Brown pick up...He adds depth to the backcourt...

Now I would just love to get Sasha and Andy signed...

Even if the European signings are a bluff, the Cavs should meet their demands if they are not outrageous. Having two guys who are unhappy with their contracts is not a good thing to have on your team. I also think that both of these guys are young athletes and have great potential upside.

From what I've gathered, what Andy and Sasha are asking for would be considered outrageous.

Sasha wants what Kapono got earlier this summer(I believe the full mid level exemption, maybe a little lower). Don't get me wrong, Sasha is better than Kapono, but that doesn't mean we'll overpay for him like Toronto did for Kapono.

I'm not sure how much Andy wants, but I guess the total salary he wants is tens of millions above what the Cavs think he's worth. I love Andy as a player, but he's a role player. He's not going to command that kind of money in today's salary cap driven league.

I read that Andy's agent is asking for 10Mil. I love him, but that
s way too much. They'll just have to take a chance this year and hope to sign him long term next. If that's even possible.

I too like the Brown pickup. While not a big help on offense, his defending is good and his versatility will fit nicely. I'm not sure how his signing will affect Sasha's, but it can't make him feel very good.

I hope Hughes has been working on his jumper!

AV wants more than what gooden is making right now.

you don't pay your backup more than your starter.

I would be happy giving AV the same contract that Gooden got. He needs to see that it is better to get a guaranteed $18 mil (3 years) in the bank now than to play this season for $1.8 and hope for a better deal next summer. I doubt that he would recover the 4 mil that he would lose this year, by not taking the Cavs offer.

Plus, next years free agent class is pretty strong(a lot stronger than this year IIRC).

Here's an ESPN insider column about it.

It's basically loaded, so even if a lot of players don't change teams, they're going to use up a lot of money to sign their big guys, and the teams with a lot of money will probably give some above average player a Rashard Lewis contract, thus killing their cap space.

Here's just a sample though:

Duncan, Garnett, Brand, Arenas, Marion, J O'Neal, Iverson, Baron Davis, Magette, Artest, Lafrentz, Juwan Howard, Kenny Thomas, Marbury, Steve Francis, Stromile Swift, Rasho, Keith Bogans, Trevor Ariza, Monta Ellis, Jose Calderon, Craig Smith, Walter Hermann, Ronny Turiaf, Daniel Gibson, Gomes, Oberto, Salim Stoudamire, Hassan Adams, Tony Allen, JR Smith, Robert Swift, Carlos Delfino, Randolph Morris, Telfair, Antawn Jamison(unrestricted), Ricky Davis(UR), Antonio Mcdyess(UR), Mourning(UR), Diop(UR), Bowen(UR), Kwame Brown(UR), Jason Williams(UR), Sam Cassel(UR), Chris Duhon(UR), Michael Finley(UR), Brent Barry(UR), Kurt Thomas(UR), Nachbar(UR), Arroyo, Horry, Gricek, Dooling, Najera, Juan Dixon(I'd love to see him on the Cavs), Mo Evens, Primo Brezec(he would be a great back up Center), and plenty of other quality players are all unrestricted free agents.

Basically, it's going to be very hard for Sasha and Andy to get what they're asking for next year.

I'm not sure which teams will have a lot of money next year(I think Atlanta, Charlotte, and Chicago still, though Chicago will have to spend a lot of money on Deng, Hinrich, et al eventually, so I'm not sure how much they're be able to spend).

LeBron James, fresh from an appearance on Saturday Night Live, twirls a basketball during the Cavaliers' media day.

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- LeBron James slipped into his work clothes yesterday and returned to the stage where he performs best.

Fresh off his hyped stint as host for the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, James got back on the basketball court as he and the rest of the Cleveland Cavaliers opened training camp with their eyes on winning an NBA title.
"That's the goal," James said. "It should be every year."
Last season, the 22-year-old star carried the Cavs to their first Eastern Conference title and a trip to the Finals, where they were swept in four games by the San Antonio Spurs.
The experience was humbling for James and his teammates, who understand that getting back won't be easy.

Training camp starts today for Cleveland Cavaliers, probably without Sasha Pavlovic and Anderson Varejao

Plain Dealer Reporter
The defending Eastern Conference champion Cavaliers begin another quest for their first NBA championship when training camp starts today at the new practice facility in Independence.
Last season, the Cavs advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time but were swept by the San Antonio Spurs in four games. So this became an off-season where the Cavs needed to make adjustments to improve their chances of another title shot. Some recent news may have slowed them down.
Restricted free agents Sasha Pavlovic and Anderson Varejao are not expected in camp today. The two players are holding out for multiple-year deals, and Pavlovic's agent, Marc Cornstein, said last week the two sides were so far apart that his client would consider playing in Europe. Cornstein also said Pavlovic, who is at home in Serbia and Montenegro, would not sign a $2.8 million qualifying offer. The qualifying offers extended to Pavlovic and Varejao expire today.

CAVALIERS
Cleveland Cavaliers missing keys from NBA championship run

Tuesday, October 02, 2007 Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter
As expected, the Cavaliers began defense of their Eastern Conference title at training camp without two key pieces to last year's success.
No one is sure when restricted free agents Sasha Pavlovic and Anderson Varejao will join their teammates at the Cleveland Clinic Courts in Independence. But for LeBron James, a few things are certain.
"I don't know Sasha or Andy's side, I don't know [General Manager Danny Ferry's] side, but I need my soldiers here to play," James said. "I hope something can get worked out because those two guys are a big part of our team. We don't make that run last year if we don't have Andy and Sasha. . . . We need those guys on this team and as a leader I need them. I hope we can get them in here soon."

NBA Brown
Cleveland Cavaliers like guard Brown for his versatility

Wednesday, October 03, 2007 Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter
The desire for General Manager Danny Ferry to sign free-agent combo guard Devin Brown had roots in their shared past. Ferry could not erase the memory of a determined and versatile Brown as a rookie several years ago.
"Devin's had to earn everything he has," said Ferry, following the second day of training camp. "He was under the radar at the University of Texas-San Antonio. He got a camp invite [with the San Antonio Spurs] because he came in and played pick-up ball with everybody. He made the team because he did well in training camp. He's just a good all-around basketball player."
Ferry discovered that good all-around play from Brown when the two first met during the 2002-03 season when Ferry was a player. Brown observed and absorbed all he could.
