Second playoff seed at stake as scuffling Cavs face Bulls

Saturday, March 31, 2007 Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter
Chicago -- The most important stretch of the Cavaliers' season starts this afternoon on national television against the Chicago Bulls at the United Center.
A Cavs win could further solidify their bid to earn the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. A loss would drop them to the fifth seed, a half game behind Chicago, and that would mean a much tougher road in the postseason. A loss also would give the Bulls, who lead the season series, 2-1, the tie-breaker over the Cavs.
Two weeks ago, it would have seemed unfathomable that the Cavs would find themselves in this predicament as they were winning their eighth straight game. But the Cavs put themselves in peril after losing four of their past six.

Here are some magic #'s for us...

The number is a combo of our wins and the other teams losses...This would allow us to be tied with them, so add one to the total to have us a game ahead of them...

We do not hold the tiebreaker with Chicago at the moment...If we win today we would be tied with them in head to head games...The second tiebreaker is record in division...We are 8-5 and Chicago is 11-3. With a win today that would put us at 9-5 and them at 11-4. They have one more game left against Det. and we have one @ Det. and one vs. Milk.

If they were to lose against Det and we were to win both of our games, then it the tiebreaker would come down to best record in Conference. They hold that tiebreaker as well as we are 25-18 and they are 30-13. With a win today we would be 26-19 and they would be 30-14. Also if the games ahead happened as they would have to for us to even worry about this tiebreaker we would be 28-19 and they would be 30-15. Leaving us 3.5 games back. So with all that said I think that Chicago is going to hold the tiebreaker against us so we are really going to have to be ahead of them by a game at the end of the season.

So here are the numbers for a tie...

Detroit - 13
Chicago - 9 (With a win today that number is 7 for a tie 8 for us to be ahead of them)
Toronto - 7
Miami - 6
Wash - 6

So the game today is our biggest of the season so far...We win today and we are a 1.5 up on Chicago...

After that we have 9 games left...

- @ Boston - On a back to back after the Chicago game. You never know with this team, but we should be able to win this game, but I am sure it will be closer than it should be.

- @ Min - No back to back just a road game against a not very good team. Should be able to win this one as well.

- Miami - Another big game for us to try and keep the 2 seed and keep Miami in the 4 hole instead of the 3 hole. I think we will come to play and Miami hasnt shown that great on the road as of late.

- @ Wash - Tough spot here after the emotional game against Miami and we have to go to Washington. I see a loss here on a back to back on the road.

- @ Det. - Probably another loss...

- NJ - Carter will probably come to play as they will be fighting for a playoff spot. We have to win this game and we are at home so I think we will...

- Atl - We will be at home again against a team that is not very good. Should be another win.

- @ Phi - Phi has played us tough this year, and we will be there, but we are going to need this win. I think we will win...

- Milk - We come back home on a back to back and hopefully can beat the Bucks, but they have played us tough...Hopefully this game doesnt mean much at this time and we have the 2 seed locked up.

So I see us with hopefully 8-2 and a win today and our losses being against Washington and Detroit.

That would mean Chicago would have to win out to clinch the 2 seed. They have 8 games left after today with tough games @ Det., Toronto, Washington, and NJ.

A win today should put us in great position to lock up the 2 seed. A loss today will kill us...

As for the Hughes hate, I understand that he doesnt have the best jumper, but when he is on it is almost a guarnanteed victory and when he is not, yeah we struggle some, but he is still a better running mate than anyone else we have and in terms of taking pressure off LBJ there is no one else that can do it like him...

The problem is that he might be on 10% of the time. He just missed 2 layups in the 3rd.

edit: and he keeps shooting and missing.

Imagine that...Hughes gets back to his regular 40 minutes, we see Snow for 14 minutes and we get one our biggest wins of the season...

We controled the whole game and they forgot how to take the ball to the hole and only scored 17 pts in the 4th quarter and let the Bulls back in the game...But LBJ finally remembered in the last minutes of OTime and took the game over...

Magic Numbers as of games on Saturday 3/31...

Detroit - 12
Chicago - 8
Toronto -6
Miami - 5
Wash - 5

don't try to create a causal link that doesn't exist. cleveland won because lbj shot 64% from the field and made 11-13 free throws combined with a great game by sasha and marshall actually showing up. snow could have played 40 full minutes per game in the last 5 and if any of the above guys had as good a game, cleveland would have won any of those horrid losses.

Cavs spear Bulls in OT

Lead over Chicago for 2nd increases
Sunday, April 01, 2007 Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter
Chicago -- All the hoopla associated with the Cavaliers and the Chicago Bulls' match-up is only a foot note until the end of the regular season.
Saturday's game was all about positioning in the upcoming playoffs and the atmosphere was the next best thing to an actual playoff game. A Cavs loss meant a fall to the fifth seed and the Bulls taking their place as the No. 2 seed.
But the Cavs managed to pull out a 112-108 overtime victory over the Bulls at the United Center and the victory means the Cavs remain No. 2 behind the Detroit Pistons.

NBA INSIDER
Playoff race will Heat up

Just when the Cavaliers did not need the Eastern Conference playoff race to get any tighter, news out of Miami has Dwyane Wade coming back soon from his dislocated left shoulder. He will practice this week.
Wade, the MVP of last year's NBA Finals, dislocated his shoulder in late February. He considered season-ending surgery but decided to rehab and come back to help the Heat defend its title. Wade is fourth in the league in scoring at 28.8 points per game.
To make matters even worse for Miami's competition, Jason Kapono, the league's leader in 3-point-shooting percentage (51.3), will play sometime this week. Kapono has been sidelined since he sprained his ankle March 5.

So Hughes' 21 points didnt have any part in the victory...

I could complain about the bullshit call we got at the end of the game which was just plain horrible...

But I am going to say how the hell does Mike Brown not have his team prepared when they are right in the middle of a playoff chase to hold onto the 2 spot after they had just beaten Chicago all they had to do was go to Boston and beat one of the worst teams in the league...

Once again we arent even in the game if not for Larry Hughes' 24 pts. But I guess we are better without him...

yawn. his 6-16, 4 of which were layups really propelled the cavs tonight. your unwaivering defense of his piss-poor play is getting a little over the top. funny that the cavs made their run in the 4th quarter where hughes didn't attempt one shot. no LBJ coupled with poor play from pavs and the typical drew gooden bipolarism is what hurt cleveland.
