Center finds way on defense in hard times

Auburn Hills, Mich.- Zydrunas Ilgauskas has not been the same, especially offensively, since he returned to the Cavaliers' lineup on Feb. 25 at Miami. His scoring and rebounding is down.
"My head hasn't really been into the game," said Ilgauskas, who missed four games while attending to his wife, who delivered two stillborn babies earlier in the month. "It's been hard physically and mentally. I'm going to keep plugging each day and hopefully things will get better."
His offense is not where it should be, but Ilgauskas has stepped up his defense. His late steal against Houston on Monday led to a dunk and gave the Cavs all the momentum they needed to hang on for the victory.

AUBURN HILLS, MICH - In the first week of March last year, former Cavaliers guard Flip Murray beat the buzzer with a game-winning 3-pointer in Chicago to edge the Bulls. It broke a five-game losing streak, refocused the team and sent it off on an 18-6 finish and its first playoff series victory in 13 years.

New seeding might help Cavs
Rule change gives good shot at No. 2. Here's a look at contenders' schedules
Most NBA teams have about 20 games left, the final quarter of the season. The trade and waiver deadlines have passed; the rosters are pretty much set.
The Cavaliers are in solid position, holding the second seed in the Eastern Conference. If they finish in that spot, it will be the highest seed they've earned since the NBA went to a 16-team playoff format in 1984. The Cavs had the second-best record in the East in 1989 and 1992 but were unable to capture better than the third seed because they never won a division title.

MILWAUKEE LeBron James had 32 points and nine assists, the last one to Anderson Varejao for the winning layup, and the Cleveland Cavaliers rallied to beat the Milwaukee Bucks, 94-92, Saturday night.
Michael Redd scored 29 points, but failed to force overtime when his short jumper missed. The Bucks lost their 12th straight game against Central Division teams since beating the Detroit Pistons in the season opener for both teams Nov. 1.

Cavs target first place
Sunday, March 11, 2007

CLEVELAND
With just more than five weeks left in the regular season, the Cavaliers still have first place in the Eastern Conference in their sights.
Will they claim it? That's anybody's guess.
One thing's for sure: Wednesday's overtime win at Detroit could make a big difference in how the conference race shapes up.
Don't look at it from a numbers standpoint. Sure, a loss would have dropped the Cavs four games behind the Pistons with 21 to play. With Detroit winning the season series, the deficit actually would have been five games.

First there were the last-second heroics in the Mid-American Conference title game. Then one proud alumnus, Ira Newble, played a stunningly big role in another Cavaliers' comeback victory.
The Cavs overcame a 12-point deficit and rallied down the stretch to edge the Milwaukee Bucks, 94-92, to win their fourth consecutive game.

Gibson awaits doctors' word
Cavs guard to have sprained toe examined today, but is still expected to sit out three more games

MILWAUKEE - Daniel Gibson is hoping to kick the boot.
The Cavaliers guard is scheduled to have team doctors examine his sprained left toe today in Cleveland. He hopes a week of inactivity has reduced the swelling and allowed it to heal to the point where he can get out of a walking boot and back on the court.
The Cavs have said they will be very cautious with Gibson, who aggravated the injury after perhaps coming back too soon -- which is why he got the order to shut down.
