Cavs 06-07 season thread

Former center remains guarded

Daugherty harbors less ill will toward Cavaliers

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

Time couldn't heal Brad Daugherty's back a decade ago, but the years have healed some of his feelings about it.
The Cavaliers will honor members of their 1986-87 team tonight. That team was 20 games under .500, but it was a season that started the best run in team history. Mark Price, Craig Ehlo, Ron Harper, John ``Hot Rod'' Williams and Daugherty started their careers that season.
Daugherty will not be there for it, just as he wasn't there in 2000 when he was named to the Cavs' ``All-Time Starting Five'' or, earlier this season, when the Cavs honored him with his own bobblehead night. It isn't because of any hard feelings anymore.

Looks like Gibson will be out for a couple weeks with his bum toe. On the bright side Brown is back from his one day trip to the D league and is 2-2 for 3's. This could be good for him to earn a spot in the lineup and will hopefully get Gibson totally healthy and fresh for the stretch run.

Offense is kicking so far this game. D could use a little work. 62-52 at the half.

Good offensive game tonight. Hopefully guys like Hughes and Brown can keep it up. This is the one game you can't bash Hughes over, hopefully it's due to him starting at PG. Pav, Z, and Gooden didn't have it tonight, but you can't argue with 120 pts.

If Shannon can continue to develop we are going to have a great young core with LBJ, Hughes, Wild Thing, Sasha, Boobie, and Shannon...

Either way we showed tonight what happens when we attack attack attack and then can hit some jumpers to go with that...

LBJ finally shot well from the line and Hughes had a great game...

CLEVELAND ? There are nights when the stars align and the Cavaliers? supporting cast plays exactly how the front office intended. Larry Hughes was an excellent No. 2 scoring option next to LeBron James. Zydrunas Ilgauskas commanded the lane with rebounds and blocked shots early, and Donyell Marshall and Anderson Varejao sparked the bench with hustle and scoring.

Gibson out two weeks with injured toe

Rookie point guard latest to miss time. Pavlovic to get starts

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - The Cavaliers cannot get, or stay, fully healthy.
Nagging injuries, personal circumstances and illnesses have limited the Cavs in the past three weeks, as they have played only one game with a full roster. The problems continue.
Rookie guard Daniel Gibson is expected to miss 10-14 days after re-injuring his left big toe Thursday night in Dallas. He stubbed it late in the third quarter in the loss to the Mavericks, inflaming an area he first injured Feb. 14 at Utah.

Needing a laugher, Cavs rout Raptors

Most everything goes right, even foul shots, as LeBron, Hughes lead way in victory

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - The Cavaliers were in need of a laugher. They got absolute hysteria.
Dealing with injuries and swirling lineups in a key game with a potential playoff opponent, Saturday had the look of a challenging evening.
Instead, it turned into one of those semi-monthly affairs where all goes the home team's way. The Cavs made just about everything -- seriously, from half-court shots to 3-pointers to those pesky foul shots -- as they pounded the Toronto Raptors 120-97.

Great win tonite...

Larry seems to play much better when he starts at the point...Not sure if Brown will keep him there when Boobie comes back, but either way with the emergence of Brown, Boobie and Sasha we are building some depth for the rest of the season and for the future...

BTW when Larry and LBJ are hot we are almost unstoppable...And that strip by Z and then the alley oop from Hughes to LBJ where he dunked it over Andy will be a top 5 play of the night if not the top play...

I would say these last 2 games have been our most impressive of the season...except for our ability to rebound on the defensive end tonite...

CLEVELAND ? LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers made Yao Ming feel like he was back in high school. Yao struggled in his first game after missing more than two months because of a leg injury, and the Cavaliers held off the Houston Rockets 91-85 last night, led by James? 32 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists.

I'd say if Hughes can maintain this for the whole time Gibson is down you let him keep playing the point. Gibson would be fine at SG and he might even get open for more catch and shoot opportunities. Add that to the fact that Hughes seems to be happier at PG than he has since he has been with the Cavs. Hopefully Gooden and Z broke out of their slumps yesterday. Brown is still impressing.
It is important that the Cavs current young players play well because those are the guys that the Cavs will be able to keep in the upcoming years. Varejao and Pavlovic will be restricted FA's this offseason. Gibson will be next year, and Brown will be a year or 2 after that. Due to the salary cap the Cavs aren't going to be able to sign big money FA's anytime in the near future so they are going to need to keep their good young players and draft well. Hopefully they will be able to move guys like Snow and Jones when they get to the last year of their contracts.

As bad as Hughes has played at times, he seems like a different player with the ball in his hands. It's just too bad that it coincides with Pavlovic in a shooting slump. Brown's play has been a pleasant suprise.

They played better but it sure helped that McGrady shot 10-31.

Cavaliers game day

Pavlovic plays new role

Emergency prospect says it will be challenge to be starting shooting guard

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - Sasha Pavlovic is now the Cavaliers' starting shooting guard, whether he's ready for it or not.
While extending his minutes may quench some fans' desire to see more of the emerging prospect and his offensive skills, he's about to face stiff challenges at the defense end. Unless he changes his mind, Cavs coach Mike Brown intends to have Pavlovic guard the opposing shooting guards, while Larry Hughes handles the point guard and LeBron James defends the small forward.

I am all for Larry at the point and either starting Sasha or Boobie...EIther way you have one of those two and Brown that will bring energy off the bench...

Also it could cut Snows minutes some which would be great, so he could hold up his legs for the playoff stretch when we will need him for the defensive end at times...

Cavs get another chance at Pistons

Detroit holds advantage by three games in East

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - The Cavaliers have beaten every team in the Eastern Conference this season except one. One with lots of circumstances.
The Cavs' well-known plight is they must overcome the Detroit Pistons before they can reach any of their large long-term goals. Beat them in a series, that is. So far in this season, they can't manage the Pistons for a single game, even at home.
